“Quiet location in park-like surroundings”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights in the last full week of October. We had a superior room which was 15m² - sufficiently spacious as it was well laid-out. As requested, it had twin beds apart from a private terrace and a writing desk. The gardens - actually more a park - are lovely, but the pond also means a lot of mosquitoes - though we must admit there were none in our room. The breakfast buffet was plentiful, with juice, fruits, cereals, cold cuts, cheese, hard-boiled eggs and a generous choice of breads, croissants, chocolate breads, cake, yoghurt, you name it… We thought breakfast starting at 7am was quite nice because it was still dark then and we didn't have to lose precious daylight hours. Dinner too was quite good. The Corsican soup with plenty of tomatoes was too sour for our taste, but the beef and calamares were well prepared. The desserts were delicious. Regarding sleep quality: as there weren't many other guests around, we had no neighbours that could have spoiled our stay with being noisy. We love near-empty hotels! We would definitely stay there again.

We have just returned from a lovely week at Hotel San Giovanni.
Our last visit was 8 years ago, and there have been noticeable improvements. The rooms have been totally refurbished to a very high standard with very good beds and everything clean and well cared for. However, we did find it difficult to shower in the open-plan bathroom without flooding the surrounding floor tiles. which were then became dangerously slippery, and surprisingly we were not provided with a 'squeegee' to aid drying. (Scandinavians have these open showers but always provide a means to clear the water.) Consequently all the towels were used as mops!
The breakfasts were excellent and we found that the evening meals were mostly good, with a choice of three starters, two mains, and sometimes up to four deserts. Another reviewer commented about the recycled food, and yes, the same soup and deserts did sometimes follow on two consecutive days, but hey! I'm not sorry that I had two opportunities to sample their great Crème Brûlée! 'Proper' French cooking with not a chip in sight!
The gardens are beautifully kept, and the quiet situation of the hotel is quite perfect.
Access to Porto Vecchio is easy by car, and practically the whole of South Corsica is well within reach. We spent two perfect days up in the mountains and other days on various beaches. We were surprised that the popular beaches, like Palombaggia, were still very crowded and it could be impossible to park as much of the car-parking area had already closed. However, we found many quiet beaches still uncrowded. You do have to be prepared to find the dirt tracks though, and we found our IGN Map 4254 (1:25,000) essential. (Readily available locally.) It’s worth mentioning that the hotel and gardens are level and anyone with walking difficulties would have no steps or problems.
Unfortunately we were invaded by plagues of mosquitoes – not usually a problem in late September but be prepared!
Ideal hotel and we would definitely recommend it. It deserves a higher rating than 2*.

Only a 2* hotel but the San Giovanni far exceeds that rating. The hotel is situated just outside Porto Veccio in beautifully maintained grounds - a lovely peaceful oasis yet within easy reach of the magnificent beaches and the mountains in the south of the island. Our standard room had a terrace leading on to the garden and was very comfortable. Food was excellent - only two choices for the dinner menu starter and main course but keeping it simple really worked well and we enjoyed every meal during the week we stayed. There is a lovely heated outdoor pool with sauna and hot tub, tennis court, table tennis etc - perfect for relaxing after a day on the beach or walking in the mountains. Give it a try - you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: Rooms in garden are probably quieter than in hotel

Hotel situated in a big park, 5 km far from Porto Vecchio centre. We took a room in the park with a big space outside with two chaiselongues. The room is very big and well furnished. There is a pool, tennis court and plays for kids.
Unfortunatelly the service is half pension, the dinner is good but we would have preferred spend a night in porto vechio. In any case the vote is excellent

We stayed here three nights in late July/early August. Even though we had booked in January, we were only able to get a standard room. But it was terrific - comfortable bed, plenty of electrical outlets, a well-functioning A/C and bathroom, and most of all - peace and quiet. The gardens around the property make one feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of Porto Vecchio, Bonifacio, and the beaches. While not really big enough for laps, the pool is spotlessly clean and has plenty of shaded lounge chairs, perfect for unwinding after a day of visiting the many local attractions, not least of which are in the Alta Rocca. Because of our timing, we were obliged to accept a half-board package. Breakfast was fine, with bread, cheese, fruit, yogurt, juice, and charcuterie; the dinners, however, were a bit of a disappointment and are the main reason we can't give this wonderful sanctuary a higher rating.

Room Tip: Book early - this place is deservedly popular with couples and families.

I'm always afraid to expect too much of an hotel where this has been rated so high by other travellers. But we indeed had a great stay at the San Giovanni. The staff and owners are always taking care of you, your remarks, suggestions, questions. They prepare everything for you and can advise on many activities. They lend you a book if needed, they contact other establishments for you (for a visit for example), they are fast and efficient.
About the facilities: heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna, tennis, ping pong table, small soccer field, children games area, beautiful park, big common terrass, all rooms with terrass or balcony, view over the garden everywhere, nice dinner menu, great breakfast... I'm sure I forget something !
Comfort of the room? large bed (beds), nice and simple decoration, clean toilets and bathroom, good furnitures quality.
Pretty close of Porto Vecchio, but you need a car though. Anyway you always need a car in Corsica, public transportation is crap. 15 minutes by car to great beaches.
The weather was not really great during our stay, so with that hotel it didn't matter too much, we were having pleasure anyway.

Room Tip: We had room number 16, close to the kitchen (we absolutely never been annoyed in any way): 1 double...

To add to the many accolades... Our two nights here in October 2010 were fantastic. The hotel is a miracle - friendly, clean, convenient, beautiful grounds (felt like the tropics!), and a strong restaurant. I loved the ping pong table. My only concern is that the spa was really small.

You do need a car to go anywhere from here, but that's true of many other area hotels.
