We started our trip through Thailand in Chiang Mai, or better yet a few kilometers away from the busy city in one of the three guesthouses of Baan Janthai. We were happily surprised by the beauty of the place and the guesthouses. The guesthouses are new and look awesome (teakwooden floor, veranda and all thai wooden furniture) and provide for everything you might need during your stay (f.e. fridge, watercooker, warm water shower, satellite television). You have a great view over the ricefields and the mountains in the distance. Having a fridge and plates and stuff came in handy for beer, snacks, etc. We made breakfast for ourself for a few days, but most of the days we choose to be spoiled by having a large breakfast on the porch of the main house.
We stayed for 5 days and had a wonderful time. Chiang Mai is about an half our away if you take the yellow or white taxi (a sort of van where you get into the back for about 20 Bath per person) and you can also drive around on the motor bicycle which we took for a trip to the hot-springs in the mountains one day. The only problem you can encounter is the lack of these taxi's in the evening. Jan en Aoe will then arrange a way for you to get to the guesthouses or the city, by sending someone to pick you up, or drive you to town themselves. There are a few nice Wats (temples) in the neighborhood, but there is also the zoo, elephant camps, and all other sorts of typicle Thai activities (flight of the gibbons is supposed to be amazing, but because of my fright of heights we passed).
The owners Jan an Aoe live in the big house on the property and will help you with all your questions and requests. Jan is Dutch and his wife Aoe is Thai, but both speak excellent English, which makes communicating very easy. We were accommodated with all we needed and even arranged our flight to Bangkok from their house and could do our laundry there.
We found Chiang Mai to be a very good startingpoint for our trip (the city is busy but friendly and there are loads of good places to shop, eat, drink & enjoy Thai culture) and Baan Janthai the perfect place to enjoy it from!
