“Beautiful hotel, spectacular pool area!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2012

The Andaman Princess is a really wonderful hotel done in a beautiful royal thai architecture. We stayed in a suite, which I believe is worth the extra money; the room is really spacious with beautiful carved and ornamented wooden interior, the bathroom is big with both a shower and a bathtub. Unfortunately, the beach was a disappointment to us. However, the pool area makes up for this; it is truly the most appealing and beautiful pool we have ever seen, the way it is formed together with the dark green tiles makes it look and feel more like a lush exotic river. Its design also enables the guests to find a somewhat private spot by the pool, something that usually is a major problem with most hotel pools. Also, the staff is really kind and helpful; lovely people! All in all, this is a beautiful hotel that is really worth trying.

This hotel could be and probaby once was amaizing, sadly it is obvious that there is a lack of funds to maintain the hotel and grounds, there would seem to be a lack of water too, the shower in our beach front bungalow was very weak and the water luke warm at best, none of the fountains were working the pool was at least a foot lower then it should of been, and the showers around the pool no longer worked. Such a shame as this could be an outstanding hotel, its location is perfect close to the harbour the pool is huge and affords everyone their own bit of privicy, however i cant see the resort improving anytime soon and would only expect to see it sink into further decline. Sadly the price of the rooms does not reflect this and they are still quite expensive, although we upgraded to a beach front villa the room was still very basic and offered no extras that are normaly afforded in this type of room, the bathroom shampoos were very well used refilled bottles, the furniture was functional but not realy designed with comfort in mind, there was no fruit or any extras which you come to expect when paying £100 + for a hotel in Thailand.

Although i'm glad ive been and seen the island i think the only way i would return to this hotel is if the rates dropped to reflect the overall condition of the Hotel.

Room Tip: Garden and Beach villas are worth considering.

The hotel is beautiful, but it is run down. The pool is amazing, it is so big. When we booked, the website said there was 5 restaurants. Although only 2 were operating when we arrived, one for breakfast and the other for lunch and dinner. The bar area has been turned into a library/ sitting area( hardly any of the reading material is in english). I would recommend walking to main street to get dinner. It's cheaper and there is alot more choice. The staff are friendly enough, but they aren't very helpful and they only speak limited english. Make sure you ask the hotel how much you should expect to pay for the long tail's to and from the island. The drivers try to rip off westerners. The hotel is perfect if you are after a quiet and relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: Make sure you contact the hotel before you arrive, so you get the room you booked.

We spent 10 thoroughly enjoyable and totally relaxing days at The Andaman Princess from January 10 to January 20. Although the resort was close to full it never once felt crowded. We had booked a garden villa and found we had been upgraded to a Pool Villa which was a fantastic surprise, the villas are well worth the extra expense as they are like a small house with a totally seperate living area and bedroom. Each room, including the bathroom is huge, the bedroom easily accomodated an extra single bed for our son and could have fitted up to 3 extra beds if necessary. The buffet breakfast has a wide range of choices and the staff re-fill your coffee or tea very promptly. As stated in my previous review, the highlight of the resort is the magnificent huge pool that meanders its ways towards the seafront. We ate dinner exclusively at the 'Coconut Palm' restaurant in the 'town' - where the ferries and long tail boats dock. Just a short walk from the restuarant, turn left at the end of the road and the restaurant faces the sea. This is by far the best restaurant we've found in the greater Khao Lak and Phuket area, (bar Mom Tri's Kitchen in Kata Noi, Phuket), the proprieter Annie, speaks excellent English and fluent French and is a gem. The cooks are talented, the food fresh, delicous and incredibly cheap. Stand out dishes are Duck a La Orange, the steamed fish with chilli, lemongrass and thai herbs (absolute knock out), the sliced beef with thai sauce. Annie perfectly understood my requirements for steamed broccoli with my fish and was fantastic at recommending dishes. Each table is welcomed with a plate of roasted peanuts and garlic and is given fresh fruit after the meal is finished. The prices are unbelievably cheap too, i can't recommend this restaurant highly enough or Koh Koh Khao island especially if you like complete peace and quiet.

Room Tip: Go for a villa, well worth the extra price

There is no doubt, that when Andaman Princess opened is was supposed to be the flagship of koh Koh Khao. Probably the Tsunami in 2004/2005 sat the hotel back enormously. And the fact is that is has never recovered ! The hotel is worn and all over you see the signs of lack of money. From the broken tiles in the pool, to the fountains without water. From the lack of pool towels to the shappy looking pool bar. From the dirty beach area to the sad empty reception area. It’s actually very sad! We had a feeling of visiting a hotel in the end of a season, right before closing down, even though we were there in the absolute highseason.
We spend 4 nights from jan 05.2012 to jan 09 2012 and paid no less that 8200 bath pr. night for a beach villa, and that’s a lot of money and even though the villa was nice, you expect the surroundings to be of a certain standard – it is not ! As I wrote, the beach bar is shappy looking and really does not give you the feeling of wanting to eat there. The same applies for the restaurant. Therefore our impression was, that the only ones who ate there, were costumers on half board. The hotel seemed abandoned at night time. I think everyone fled down to the little harbour area. The spa I will not even mention, expensive and not good ,employing the only unfriendly Thais I’ve have ever meet!
Koh Koh Khao is a lovely island, as Thailand was 40 years ago! Very quiet a night time with wonderful beachlife at day time. And we do recommend the Island and even wants to go back, but not back to Andaman Princess . We checked out some of the other hotels and no doubt that next time we will stay at the C&N Beach Resort, cool, relaxed and upbeat !

Very nice, if a little bit run down hotel, with friendly staff. Very clean and nice rooms with ok views. Speaking with the staff is mostly only possibly through common hotel sentences, as their English isn't that good. (Conversation not possible)

Extremely large and spacious pool. (by far the best feature of this hotel!) Maybe a bit shallow for a 1.94m bloke :-) It's only 1.50 meters,.... if they remember to top it off once in a while.....)

The gym is a mess. Don't bother bringing work out clothes to this hotel, the equipment is lacking, not very well maintained and the whole gym is not very inviting. We took long walks down the beach which is also very nice.

Absolutely no room service.... (Why???)

If you're visiting off season, prepare to stay at a hotel where the airconditioning is turned off in the lounge areas. The fountains, jacuzzis etc. are also not working (due to savings issue??)
Bring a towel if you plan on using the pool table in the lounge.... :-)

The beach is NOT for swimming, to muddy, you need to take a hotel further north, or preferably closer to Khao Lak or Phuket (south), but the pool makes up for this.
For snorkeling you need to travel a bit in order to get to the good spots. Do NOT take the snorkeling tour to Phi Phi and Similan islands which are an absolute nightmare with thousands of tourist occupying a small stretch of the beach both places. In stead take the the trip to the Surin islands. This tour departs further up north, and as such there are not very many tourists and the boats are smaller and more comfortable. By all standards there is also a lot more to see on Surin than any of the other places.

To summarize, we had a very nice vacation in this isolated part of Thailand. There is absolutely nothing to do on this island, and the focus is on total relaxation. Entertainment was had by buying the extra (excellent) tours with various tour operators. This hotel is NOT a 4+ star hotel as advertized. It probably was when it was new. As of now, it's a not very well maintained, but clean hotel. But definitely not 4+ stars standard.

If you're looking for a very quiet and relaxing vacation this is the place for you. If you want to be able to step outside into the hustle and bustle of city life, pick a hotel closer to Phuket.

Drinks advice: At the pool try ordering a watermelon / pineapple shake... Great thirst quencher!!!

Me, my husband and my 9yr old son stayed in a garden villa from Jan 3 until Jan 10 2011 and we totally loved it. The villas are designed in traditional Thai style with vaulted ceilings and are huge and very well appointed. The lounge/kitchenette area, seperated from the bedroom with a heavy sliding door, was excellent, especially as my husband is a night owl and I like to get up early. The extra bed and breakfast for our son was free of charge (which is extremely rare). The bathroom was also huge and the spa had coloured underwater lights - very funny. It was great value for money and we plan to stay next January for 10 -12 nights. The villa is tastefully fitted out and although it was advertised as a 'garden villa' it faced the sea towards Ban Nam Ken, we couldn't have asked for more. The resort itself is huge, with attractive, well tended gardens and the villas are incredibly spaced out and not on top of each other like other resorts. The pool is 'to die for' - 1400 square meters meandering through the property and lined with frangipani trees, luckily for us they were in full flower, the fragrance adding to the ambiance. There is a large room off the lobby with 2 huge pool tables, a kid's corner and another room with 2 computers with high speed internet. I also used the gym everyday (to try to balance the food and drink!). The staff were absolutely fantastic and were great with our son, all the staff went out of their way to make our stay memorable. We ate at the restaurant a couple of times and the food is very good and reasonably priced. I have read other reviews which gave poor ratings for the buffet breakfast, to be honest, when I am at home I eat only porridge or meusli so I found the buffet breakfast to be very good with a great variety to choose from, a special mention must be made for the chocolate waffles - brilliant (hence the daily gym workout!). Kho Koh Khao island itself is an absolute gem, so quiet (I have never before seen an empty beach in Thailand in the high season) , we also loved the long- tail boat rides between the island and the mainland. The 3 restaurants at the harbour were great. We only 'discovered' the Coconut Palm restaurant on the second last night and were were kicking ourselves for not trying it earlier in our stay as the food was sublime; Duck in Orange sauce for $6 Australian. We went on to stay in Khao Lak for a further 10 nights and we hired a car twice and drove back to the island just to eat at the Coconut Palm. Do yourself a favour and go there for dinner. If you are looking for total relaxation and value for money you can't go past the Andaman Princess.
