We were travelling around North Norway for a week. We picked up a hire car from Tromso airport and travelled for about one hour down the virtually empty 862 (a major tourist route) to this hotel. Bearing in mind, we had never driven on the 'wrong' side of the road and this was 'peak' season, the journey was easy and breath takingly beautiful.
We arrived at this hotel and were greeted very warmly and shown to our twin room. The room was clean, comfortable and perfectly spacious. The weather was rather inclement and were were quite tired after the travelling so we did not really explore the area. We had a fabulous dinner in the hotel which included a main course of halibut which was absolutely perfectly cooked and delicious. The main member of staff we met, a lady called 'Siss' was chatty, friendly and helpful who told us about the local area; her story on sitting at the harbour in the winter and listening to the whales 'blowing' has only made us want to go back again during the winter months!
We spent a comfortable night and breakfast was the standard norwegian choice of cereal, eggs, smoked salmon, cold meats, fruit etc combined with the usual delicious bread.
The hotel is only about 10 - 15mins journey from the Brensholmen to Betnhamn ferry to take you to the second largest island Senja. We arrived early for the ferry and were glad we did as several vehicles could not get on the ferry (bearing in mind this is peak season) and they do not run that often!
I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the hotel with a reasonable view which was not overlooked.

Stayed for two nights, in one of the houses by the beach. Great houses, modern and well equipped. Ours even had a sauna.

Staff nice and helpful, food delicious.

But the must-see is the surronding nature, the beaches and the mountains. Go to the sea, watch the eagles, and last but not least, enjoy the bright daylight at midninght!

Room Tip: House 61 or 62

if you are in Tromso, this should be the place you should stay, so beautiful and quiet. I was there in Nov but I think the house will be idea for any other seaon. My friend (lindawong) has written a very good review about our stay, I just want to concur with her and expressed the helpfulness of the bus driver and also the guy (one of the owner) that pick us up without charge. Such a beautiful country and wonderful people. If I come back to Norway, I want to come back to this place. this what my friend Linda wrote: On 12-Nov-12, we had planned to go to Ersfjorden from downtown Tromso before finding our way to Sommaroy Hotel. But, we did not make it there. We hopped onto bus 420 hoping to catch a connecting bus to Sommaroy hotel from Sandvik. We informed the driver of our final destination and were told that there are no buses to the hotel from Sandvik. The driver went beyond his call of duty and surprised us by calling Sommaroy hotel and made arrangement for someone to pick us up from the last bus stop. Without his help, we would have been stranded out there. At the last stop, a tall guy by the name of "Shell" (forgot the Norwegian name) picked us up. He is actually one of the owners of Sommaroy Hotel. He was very nice and helpful. He drove us around the island and shared with us information about the island. We had booked a beach house for 6 of us. We picked this hotel based on some travellers' superb reviews and most importantly, the chance to see the northern lights. We had requested for one of the cabins from 45 to 48. We were happy to be given cabin 48 which was clean and spacious. There are three rooms on the upper floor - a master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and two rooms with double-decker beds. On the ground floor, there is another toilet, a kitchenette, dining area and a balcony. We were pleased with the kitchenette as it was well stocked with cooking essentials. At about 9.30pm, we saw this white patch in the sky. We weren't sure if it was the light as this is our first time. We quickly grabbed our cameras and dashed out to the balcony to set up the tripod. We were all very excited when we saw the green light in the camera. The lights slowly faded and re-appeared again numerous time for the rest of the night. In between, there were strong wind and heavy snowfall. We went to bed after seeing the lights at 1am. We are glad that we stayed at Sommaroy Artic hotel. We saw the lights right outside our beach house. We were able to enjoy the lights without having to endure the cold for too long.

Room Tip: Try to get cabin 45 to 48 which is just right next to the seaside. If you are on a budget, bring so...

Nice hotel on a beautiful location. Great service (except for that one night, when we came for dinner at 19:10 and we heard that the chef had decided to close the kitchen at 19:00, while it was supposed to be open until 20:30, and no one had cared to inform the guests about this), friendly staff and history and culture at breakfast from Kjell.
Easy to venture out to the island and see the scenery and/or Northern Lights.

We had a seaside cabin. Very spacious, very comfortable and clean. Surprised to find a sauna in the cabin, but disappointed when I saw there was no bucket with water to throw on the stones, nor a drain in the sauna (the water would run straight into the hallway). As a Fin, a sauna is not a real sauna if one's not being to "löylyä" (but that may just be a cultural difference).

Great experience, and highly recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea cabin. They're a few hundred meters away from the restaurant, and slightly more ex...

Sommaroy is an island located about one hour's drive from Tromsø. The hotel is by the sea and within walking distance to the village. A very warm welcome, coffee and tea available all day in the living room, free wifi, a comfortable library to warm up after a whale watching expedition or to enjoy an after dinner drink. The hotel is cosy and friendly. The meeting facilities were perfect for our 20 pax-group. The rooms are rather small but clean and comfortable. Make sure to enjoy the outdoor hot tub and a dip in the sea!
