“Perfect Sunday Lunch”

"I hear the Stanley does a decent meal" an elderly local told us when we bought some apples. We had read reviews but wondered when we arrived whether the little pub was the place. It was indeed "the place". A welcoming log fire warmed the dining area and the food was perfect -poussin with quinoa pilaf and skate with a fennel and saffron salad. So good!

We called in to the tourist info office in Beechworth and a local suggested we go there for a light lunch. We shared a duck pâté and a cheese plate (Agur Blue ) . What can you say, both were excellent and the service fantastic, we were served as an a extra some olive oil with their tomato chilli jam, we came away with two jars. Next time we go back, we will definitely have lunch there.

The Stanley is a beautiful little spot in a picturesque tiny town. The ambiance of the fireplace crackling away in cost room with plenty of natural light sets the tone. Shane offers a warm welcome and the rarely seen winning combination of spot on service yet comfortable and familiar, showcases his experience and passion all at once. Started with a superb scallop dish. Perfectly cooked on a bed of velvety cauliflower purée and a genius jamon imberico/salt/crumb. The subtlety of the flavours allowed the dish to melt together into an incredible dish. The duck Maryland was incredible, the jus was worth licking the plate to finish. Topped off with creamy white chocolate mousse that filled the tiny gaps left. This was the highlight of the trip and a must for anyone within driving distance. My only complaint... It's not in my state!

After an earlier try to get there ruined by the bushfires spent an evening at the Stanley Pub and what a great experience. The hospitality was first class, the rooms terrific and wow the meals the best we have had in a long time. Anne marie and Shane could not have been more accomodating and Shanes knowledge of local wines was impressive. we will certainly be back soon. what a terrific evening.

Yes it is now over twelve months since our initial trip to Stanley Pub. We visited again on two separate nights in December 2012. Our wonderful hosts greeted us like long lost friends and everything we remembered about our first visit was there to greet us again. A beautiful serviced room, a fantastic gourmet breakfast to help yourself to and incredible dining with wonderful unobtrusive but attentive service. It was wonderful to toddle off to our French Provincial room which was part of the hotel and dining experience. Again I couldn't resist asking for the tarte tartin!

Room Tip: There are only two rooms to choose from. We had the smaller one which was lovely and quiet.

We enjoyed our first meal as a stopover on the way to Melbourne so we thought should stay as well as eat here.
The highway is packed with mediocre motels and we have often kept driving rather than stay in what's offered like Holbrook, Tarcutta etc.etc.
This time we broke the trip up and stayed in a couple of wonderful b and b type places - thoroughly enjoyed them.
The room is pleasant and all you need but the special treat is dinner.
Lynn was able to eat borscht for the first time in years - goats cheese instead of cream and it was wonderful. The swordfish main and its accompaniments was similalry top quality.

In desperate need of a peaceful weekend away, I remembered reading reviews of the unassuming Stanley Pub in one of the Melbourne newspapers. We ended up staying for 2 blissful nights in a romantic but not tizzy room, with a spacious ensuite and the balcony was accessible through french doors. Even though it was very cold and raining in the late afternoon when we arrived, Shane had put the heater on and the lamps were lit and we immediately felt welcome and relaxed. It's the little things that make the difference. We booked for dinner and were glad we did! The dining room was packed and we had a lovely spot near the open fire. Our meals and wine were superb, while Shane's service was attentive without being intrusive.

Although we retired while the dining room was still busy, we didn't hear a thing through the solid walls. We awoke refreshed and were totally spoilt by one of the loveliest breakfasts we've enjoyed anywhere! Home made muesli, yoghurt, jams, bread and superb local fruit and nuts were set out for us in the breakfast room with an array of special teas and coffees as well. We reluctantly returned home after a short but refreshing break in this beautiful part of the world, glad that we'd indulged in Shane and Anne-Maree's hospitality of the Stanley Pub. Would love to return ... any excuse will do!
