We stopped here on the way back from chiang dao caves, we are so glad we didn't make a special journey to it. The scenery is lovely, but once you've seen it, that's it.....

“Awesome day on the lake”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013 via mobile

I saw this on Trip Advisor and was looking for something to do out of the city and this turned out to be the perfect choice. It's not far out and we had a rented car so drove out. The drive itself was interesting as it was quite a smoky day and we stopped for coffee in a town on the main road. Once we got to the lake it was simply a matter of organising a boat to take us out to a floating restaurant (500baht) return. We were the only oneson the boat and the only ones on the restaurant. The meal was awesome, fresh fish in curry and also deep fried, papaya salad. The vista was pretty cool because of the smoke haze. It was so peaceful and relaxing we stayed out at the restaurant for about two hours and when we were ready they just bought us straight back to the dock. By Thai standards it wasn't a cheap meal or day but for something different near Chiang Mai I highly recommend it

“Dam restaurant”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2013

We stopped here for lunch as part of a cycle tour. The cashew chicken at restaurant on land, was among top 3 dishes we've ever had!! Worth an hours drive from Chiang Mai.

“Peaceful wilderness”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

It is about an hour drive from the main city of Chiang mai..Before i write something about the dam,i would like to point out two things...don't go without prior booking, even if you are going just for a day out..as it was hard for us to get a tail boat that could take us to the floating restaurant. Secondly, either have your own transport or hire it for a full day...as you wont find any local transport near the dam.
On reaching the dam,you will find a restaurant over looking the dam,on your right side.you can enjoy a drink or a snack before leaving for the floating restaurants..The view from this place is awesome, water body surrounded by hills and mountains, and long tails boats making their way through, vanishing into the mist.
Later we took a long tail boat for 500 Bhat to one of the floating restaurants.Once you step on the floating restaurant, the surrounding peace and wilderness is unmatched. Here we had our lunch (not too expensive considering the great view and peace) and just relaxed. It was a great day out.
You can do swimming, canoeing, stay a night( if you can live without modern comforts).. :)

I went here with my boyfriend and a mutual friend while he was visiting us in Chiang Mai.

The lake appears to be VERY clean!! And it is an incredible escape from the city!
It only takes about an hour to drive there - but I think it would be difficult to do if you didn't have your own transportation available.

We stayed 1 night on a houseboat (eakachai) but I wish we stayed at least 1 more night. The water is warm at night but in the daytime feels more refreshing. All night we heard fish jumping- it was incredible! They would jump right in front of the houseboat-some of them huge!
The swimming was great!

We were the only ones on the group houseboat at the time, which was great because it felt very private and secluded. The food was good (not fantastic, but not reeeeeeally expensive either).

My only complaints: After dinner the dishes were left on the table in front of our rooms until noon the next day...not nice having a big pile of dirty dishes sitting there but not a big deal either.
And we weren't informed that they cut the power at certain times either...in the morning it was very hot because the fan of course had no power. And also the water won't run so you can't have a shower/brush your teeth/wash your hands etc. at this time (Which we experienced from 7am-11am when we left). It would have been best if they let us know this would happen.

I realized that maybe I am reviewing the houseboat (eakachai) rather than the lake at this point. Whoops
