“Not worth the money”
Reviewed February 11, 2008

We went there to celebrate my wife's birthday.

First the good stuff:
1. Staff is genuinely nice, polite and eager to please. Because the resort is small, they can remember you. One of the manager (Jan) even make his round to talk to guests.

2. The resort is exclusive and even when it is full-house, you would not see more than two couples at any one time in the restaurant s/ beach.

3. No kids.

4. There's only two restaurants in the hotel, and one of which only serves dinner. The latter cost about $2400baths per pax.

5. THE BEACH IS GORGEOUS. White sand, exclusive, nice waves and clean clean water.

6. Spa is good but pricey.

Now, the complaints:
1. Staff lack training. E.g. we requested for toothbrush and they really brought toothbrush without the toothpaste. They brought cake and candle but forgot the matches / lighter. The room service people barged in without knocking while I'm bathing. It doesn't help that the bathroom is right next to the door and DO NOT HAVE ANY DOORS!

2. The hotel is extremely secluded. It's actually not in Phuket island, but on Phang Nga - the southern tip of mainland Thailand. It's 2.5 hours from Patong and 2 hours from Phuket City. There's no other amenities around the hotel - only two restaurants and one souvenir shop.

3. We made our bookings in advance and specifically left instructions to give us a good room (wife's birthday). We were one of the first couple to check in that day, but were given Room 301 (Loft) - right next to a common staircase and beside the lobby. When we asked to change room, they politely told us it was full - but we saw people checking in later and got better rooms. Maybe it's their policy to pre-reserve a room , but it was not a good start to our stay.

Conclusion: The hotel is not worth its price. There's better and cheaper hotels in Phuket. This is definitely not Aleenta Hua Hin.

We stayed here for a week in January 08 and were quite disappointed. We usually only take one holiday a year and it's always a high end resort somewhere and we don't mind paying top buck for that experience. However, for the price we paid here (around $1100 US a night), we felt properly ripped off.

We had booked a Pool Residence as we wanted a sizeable room with private pool. The room was 'OK', but this resort prices itself up there with the really top hotels in Phuket (the room rate we paid wasn't far adrift from Banyan Tree prices) and the whole experience is nowhere near what you expect to be getting for that price. It's more like a 4 star 'suite hotel' and it almost felt like it had just been built. The detailing in the room was poor (gaps around the lighting fittings, blown lightbulbs not replaced, grubby marks on the pale furnishings), the fact that you have to enter the rooms through an underground car park like some kind of cheap motel isn't exactly the glamorous spa resort we were looking for, one side of our room (310) overlooked a derelict piece of land littered with construction debris and a huge pool of dirty water. Hardly idyllic.

Although the beach was quiet and pretty, the beach bar delivered very average and inconsistent cocktails at 5 star hotel bar prices, the restaurant menu never changed (not a revolving 'special' or anything changed) and featured very average food at top whack prices (2 simple thai curries, four drinks, one shared appetizer, one shared ice cream = almost US $100) and then there are the language problems other people have mentioned (we ordered coffee and some pastries one afternoon and instead got coffee and a basket of toast!!).

We also had problems with the water pressure the whole holiday (the bath was a jacuzzi which is all well and good, but the pressure is so bad, it takes half an hour to fill it!). There was a problem with our pool the first two days of our stay. It was sludge brown and we weren't able to use it (in a $1100 a night 'Pool Residence'). It still wasn't fixed by the third day so the management moved us to another room and promised us a discount for the first two days (which ended up being a miserly 15% off the room rate - a very poor gesture when you've been done out of a pool for a quarter of your holiday). No other offer of a complimentary bottle of wine sent up, for the inconvenience....nothing. All in all, we felt like they were just taking our cash at every turn and delivering a sub-standard product. Very, very disappointing.

Another point to note. One of the reasons we chose the hotel was that we were sure we read somewhere that the resort took 'No children under 12'. It transpires that one half of the hotel's rooms are 'owned' by investors and just managed by Aleenta, so kids are allowed in those rooms. The room next to us housed four kids under 7 who spent several hours a day, and unfortunately most of the sunset time, jumping around in their pool shrieking (not to mention the 7.45am starts with them running up and down, the sound of which, reverberated throughout the whole construction of the building). Not exactly what we'd wished for on our romantic annual getaway.....

If, like us, you are looking for a romantic getaway or a top spa destination, despite the trendy press mentions (which are probably purely based on the fancy website pictures and not an actual visit to the place) and their inclusion in the SLH group of hotels, this is definitely not it. Spend your cash where you're actually getting value for money.

My wife and I stayed at the Aleenta this past Christmas along with my brother and his wife and 1-year old baby. The location of the property is quite isolated from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Phuket, which is probably a good thing. The beach and property were lovely.
We had a two bedroom suite. It was rather odd that we had to enter elevator to the building through a lower level parking lobby - suggest to me this was probably a condo development that they converted to a hotel after completing the building. The suite was clean and we had our own pool with a view of the beach. Oddly the floors were extremely slippery, which was dangerous since we were coming in and out of the pool. The bathrooms for each bedroom were in a loft-like area, and again the steps were extremely slippery. I'm pretty fit and agile and I was cautiously holding the banister going up and down.
The main issue with this resort was the service. The staff was nice, but they just didn't get it. They weren't trained properly and it left much to be desired after staying at similar tropical resorts run by Four Seasons. Everything from ordering room service to requesting additional towels (they kept folding the dirty ones) became a chore because of their poor English. We didn’t think it would be a big problem having read other reviews but it really did get to the point that it affected our vacation.
The food was also not very good and the room service menu was very limited - normally not a big issue but it is here given the isolated location of the resort.

We've been staying 10 days in this resort. The expectations were high (as is the price) but it was a typical case of overpromise - underdeliver. On top of it all: the management did agree with our feedback:
- service is very poor (chaotic)
- staff doesn't speak english very well
- we've stayed in de pool suite (103): the airco's of the other pool suites were always on, so it was noisy
- taxi service was not available, since the resort wanted the use the cars only for check-ins
- our bagage was almost lost as a result of the chaos at the front office
- the poolsuite was very small (appr. 20m2)
- prices are too high compared to the service the resort delivers
... and many more complaints
We've adressed the issues two times with the managers of the resort. Twice they promised to do something with our feedback: twice we haven't heard from them.

A positive note:
- beautifull beach
- management knows there are a lot of issues

conclusion: the resort has potential, but there's a lot of work to be done to reach the minimal requirements.

I viewed with some trepidation the location far north of Phuket airport - it seems to be in the middle of nowhere. Too far away from Phuket to bother going into town really, however for two days it was fantastic.

Pricey but truly excellent massage and spa - not a gigantic operation but charming, with massage room looking out over the beach and skilled staff. It's exceedingly romantic.

The service could occasionally be a bit unfocused, however they really couldn't do enough for us. iPod in our room broke and was very promptly fixed. Attention to detail in rooms is great, iPods, books etc, games in room came in handy, good laundry service, a library and great position. Each room has a wooden frog you put on the bed if you want the room made up. Cute. We were in a loft room with views of the sea and an infinity pool out the front door - quite lovely.

You are limited to the one restaurant on the premises - for a couple of days that is OK, for longer I don't know. The food was fine/above average for us but not cheap, of course. There is a bar down near the beach - good cocktails.

We paid 8000 baht a night (inc tax) for this. Is it worth it? In the context of Thailand, probably not, but compared to similarly priced hotels elsewhere, well, it's good value. I didn't feel that I'd wasted my money: they get so much right.

Only real criticism is that when they organised a car to take us to Koh Lanta, two showed up and tried to change the price! Not great communication, and then we ended up being dropped off at a ferry and having to hitch a ride with some guys from Singapore: again, a shambles.

The credit card slip I received on checkout had a disclaimer saying you agreed to their particular exchange rate, and agreed not to use the standard Bank exchange rate: no idea if they all have that in Thailand, but I'm sure that cost me a few dollars extra. ;-)

Despite the above, I'd recommend: a most enjoyable stay. Four and a half stars, actually. I would definitely go back :-)

Perfect for honeymooners! It is away from Phuket and therefore the experience is totally different. We stayed in Phuket first (Twin Palms in Surin beach) and we had a perfect beach to spend our time at. Aleenta doesn't have a nice beach. The hotel is all about the rooms with pools. We loved it and spent most of our time in our private pool. However, the experience is totally different at Surin beach, where you have a perfect beach, massage, jet ski, restaurants everywhere. At Aleenta you have to eat there at the resort (very expensive!) or try to find something outside like we did a couple of times. We took bikes from Aleenta (for free) and just rode around the villages - great experience!
The resort is just amazing. The turn down of the room at night is just amazing..they turn a relaxing music on, prepare your bed, light the candles..so, so romantic! Overall it was perfect and we will definitely come back! It was perfect for us to mix the trip a bit and experience the island and also the village side of thing.

PERFECT!

If you're thinking about going to Thailand...check Aleenta out if you want to feel like you're in paradise!

We went to Thailand for our honeymoon and stayed at the Aleenta 5 days/4 nights while we were in Phuket. We booked a package off their website. We had an absolute amazing time. Every single aspect of our stay was nothing less than perfect.

We booked the Pool Residence and got upgraded to the Spa Residence since it was our honemoon. Words cannot accurately describe how much like paradise our place was. 2 floors of heaven. The private pool, the floor to ceiling glass windows surrounding us, the jacuzzi, the spa room, all the balconies in everyroom, the scented oil---even the bathrooms...it was heaven. The even set up a special jacuzzi bath for us - milk bath i think? The furniture and decor in the rooms welcomed us to relax and enjoy ourselves. They even had Jenga!

The staff was so kind---we did not having any issues at all; we felt like a king and queen in how they treated us. We booked an Thai cooking class at an additional cost and we had SOOO much fun. Can't wait to use some of the skills here.

Our package included gourmet dinners (on the beach, outdoors); breakfast (SO MUCH FOOD), massages (wish we could go back for more), and an excursion to James Bond Island-(added a some adventure to the trip)....we would recommend getting a package; they have so many on their site

The room - perfect; the food - great (especially this fried fish dish); the staff - always smiling and so helpful ; the resort---heave...LOVED IT

we were debating between the caribean & aleenta----SO Glad we went with Aleenta---i may even say that it was the best part of our wedding celebrations!

  • Liked — our suite - two floors, bedroom, living room, dining room, spa room, balconies, patios, private pool...floor to ceiling glass windows that you can open to sit out on the patio...(with a full blinds for complete privacy)
