“Wonderful stopover on our journey to the South”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

We stayed in this castle for one night as a stopover, on our way to the Provence.

We found this castle to be exactly as we had expected from the photos and description.
This is indeed a wonderful place, with green and beautiful gardens and views.

The host was very friendly and very attentive, helping us with the typical things you need for a little child, helping us with a parking spot for our car and more. We didn't have to ask for anything!

We were upgraded to the Family room at arrival, which was very clean and comfortable, with a beautiful view. Bathroom with separate shower and tub, all in ancient style, while functioning perfectly with all comfort of today.

Despite this being an historical building with the typical sounds that go with old squeaky floors and stairs, the night was absolutely quiet, and even in the morning we did not hear sounds of others (there were 2 or 3 other families staying in the castle as well). But then maybe we were the first ones to wake up :-)

Breakfast was typically french, croissants, bread, coffee etc. and again great service by the host, having prepared a baby chair and cereals for our little one. Price was already included in the total fee.

All in all I think it was certainly value for money (without taking the upgrade into account) and we hope to stay here again in the future!

Our trip through the Burgundy countryside finished at this wonderful and authentic chateau. We loved the experience of staying in this beautiful room on the second floor with big windows overlooking the breathtaking gardens. The staff and the owners were warm and welcoming and gave us excellent tips on the area. The chateau is very tastefully furnished and has a peaceful athmosphere. We highly recommend it.

I loved our week here in Burgundy. The room was large, the shower/bathroom exquisite and fitted out with Aesop toiletries. The grounds were huge and the Gardens are historic and therefore open to the public, artificial lakes, streams and formal herb gardens dot the property. We were able to forage in the forest for wild asparagus, garlic and sorrel for dinner.

The Chateau was the site for the Tastes of Burgundy cooking week. We walked along the local canal and talked to the lock keepers witnessing the passage of a canal boat through the lock. A great venue for weddings with a room available for the reception, fabulous grounds and excellent local caterers.

Room Tip: Ask for the loft rooms on the second floor they are bigger than the others.

As predicted from the website and previouos reviews, I just loved Chateau de Barbirey, it's rooms, gardens and the hospitality of the owners and staff. What a truly gorgeous, peaceful and relaxing place. Jean-Bernard and Tequila (the dog) provided a great initial welcome/ introduction to the chateau and gardens, which set the scene. The staff provided great advice provided on local restaurants and enjoyable tourist routes to travel as well as great tea /coffee and breakfast. The rooms were tastefully decorated and of generous proportions, with super comfortable beds and nice views of the grounds. When travelling with a number of others there are a number of accommodation options /rooms to choose from, which is also great. Fabulous location for a wedding/ birthday party celebration. Highly recommended. I'd love to return some day.

We spent Easter with the whole family in the Chateau and loved it... As the weather was quiet cold and rainy, we took advantage of all the Chateau had to offer (board games, books, piano, comfy seats, open fire place)... and enjoyed the time spent together. The dining room was perfect to seat the 20 of us in a charming setup and enjoy fine food, good wine and great company... Much time was spent preparing and cooking in the great and comfortable kitchen and walking in the garden and some of us did not even leave the property for the whole stay so much they liked it there. A perfect place for a group or large family and we all hope to be back for more quality time in a great place...

Beautiful, they have a lovely estate that is very relaxing and open. The evenings were nice, I sat in the common room and the fireplace was on. The owners, father and son were very nice to me, I was sick and they were very concerned with making sure I was ok and comfortable. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the bathroom was brand new and state-of-the art. The furniture and decoration is really nice. Its in a small village in France, I would definitely recommend.
