“My home in another life”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

As predicted from the website and previouos reviews, I just loved Chateau de Barbirey, it's rooms, gardens and the hospitality of the owners and staff. What a truly gorgeous, peaceful and relaxing place. Jean-Bernard and Tequila (the dog) provided a great initial welcome/ introduction to the chateau and gardens, which set the scene. The staff provided great advice provided on local restaurants and enjoyable tourist routes to travel as well as great tea /coffee and breakfast. The rooms were tastefully decorated and of generous proportions, with super comfortable beds and nice views of the grounds. When travelling with a number of others there are a number of accommodation options /rooms to choose from, which is also great. Fabulous location for a wedding/ birthday party celebration. Highly recommended. I'd love to return some day.

We spent Easter with the whole family in the Chateau and loved it... As the weather was quiet cold and rainy, we took advantage of all the Chateau had to offer (board games, books, piano, comfy seats, open fire place)... and enjoyed the time spent together. The dining room was perfect to seat the 20 of us in a charming setup and enjoy fine food, good wine and great company... Much time was spent preparing and cooking in the great and comfortable kitchen and walking in the garden and some of us did not even leave the property for the whole stay so much they liked it there. A perfect place for a group or large family and we all hope to be back for more quality time in a great place...

Beautiful, they have a lovely estate that is very relaxing and open. The evenings were nice, I sat in the common room and the fireplace was on. The owners, father and son were very nice to me, I was sick and they were very concerned with making sure I was ok and comfortable. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the bathroom was brand new and state-of-the art. The furniture and decoration is really nice. Its in a small village in France, I would definitely recommend.

We stayed two nights in November with a group of 25 people, for a splendid and unique birthday party! Waking up in the morning and looking at the beautiful green garden from your bedroom window is great, as it is walking around in the small park surrounding the castle itself. In the region there are lots of activities including wine tasting and bike rides. Food in the region is also excellent.

Thank you to Colas and his family for providing such a lovely place, and thank you to Clemence for her care and kindness. We had a lovely stay, which was initially for one night until we realised we were able to stay another night due to a change in our travel plans. Regret averted!
The chateau, with its gardens and grounds was a pure delight, as were the elegantly decorated rooms. Clemence entertained us with stories and reenactments of mouse eating owls in the pigeon 'tower' and happily woke early to serve us breakfast on one of the mornings.
I feel all of my hours researching on the internet for places to stay was completely warranted when I laid eyes on Chateau de Barbirey. I don't think there is one inch of it that I didn't capture in a photograph!
Thank you again and again. Hopefully we can visit again soon. In the meantime, I'll recommend it to everyone I know!

Stayed just one night. Completely memorable - unlike any other place we've stayed. Felt exceptionally welcome, like being invited into someone's home, albeit a very grand one. It might not be the most professionally organised (there was no shampoo, but we were loaned some by the owner's son's girlfriend) but the personal touch epitomised the feeling that the owners and staff really want you to enjoy the chateau.

The chateau and the gardens are lovely, and the owner's pride in his restoration project is justifiable. Sitting down to breakfast with him was completely natural. As indeed was the dandelion conserve he encouraged us to try.

We were there towards the end of a cycling tour so splashed out an extra €20 on a "special" room, of which four-poster bed and enormous vintage bath were just some of the features.

We would recommend unhesitatingly to anyone who wants something different and memorable.

The place itself is beautiful and you would love to walk around those gardens all day long, "playing" with the swan and just enjoying the nature. Four days, it was clearly not enough.
Also, the owners were so nice to us, making everything perfect and attached to every details.
I really recommend the Chateau de Barbirey as a great place to stay during a trip in France !
