Vardia Bay Studios
Reviewed October 21, 2013

Folegandros is an undiscovered gem which should feature in any Cyclades Island Hopping trip. Vardia Bay Studios are clean and attractively basic. They overlook the very quiet “port” with superb views and balconies from which to enjoy the comings and goings. Breakfast is a simple affair but sufficient for most tastes. Not many places to eat nearby but there is a very good bus service to the Chora where there is an abundance of places to eat and drink. Try the little fish taverna near to Vardia Bay Studios where Natasha serves excellent fresh fish, although a little pricey. As General Patton said, “We shall return”.

Room Tip: The rooms on the middle floor appear to be the best value with good views

We had initially booked our stay at Vardia Bay for 7 nights but ended up leaving after 4, being totally disappointed by the services and the quality in relation to the amount of money we paid. Our booking was for a standard room (double bed – sea view) for 120 euros per night (discounted from 150 per night). We chose Vardia as there were no other 3* or above hotel options in Chora for the period we visited the island.

Although we had made a large pre-deposit (30% of total value) and had all the intentions of staying for 7 nights, it hit me negatively that they caused a great fuss when we expressed our dissatisfaction and decided to leave earlier. They were requesting a 50% compensation for the rest of the stay.

As an experienced traveler, I definitely believe that Vardia Bay is an overpriced lodge in Folegandros which takes advantage of its picturesque location but offers mediocre accommodation. My recommendation to future visitors would be to exhaust all similar choices in Chora before booking here.

Location - Transfers / The hotel (apartments) is nicely located on the cliff overlooking Karavostasis & offers a scenic view to the harbor. Of course this is provided that you get a room with a balcony in the front side of the building. Rooms on the back overlook the Aegean Sea and the nearby Vardia beach. Although one would expect noise from the ships’ come and goings, it proved rather peaceful and relaxing apart from the occasional noise late at night from passers-by.

Among the positive things is the fact that Karavostasis port serves at the hub for many ferry transfers. Nearby you will find small boats departing for the infamous “Katergo” beach and daily cruises around the island. Furthermore, the bus station to Chora is a conveniently a few minutes by foot from the hotel, but I would recommend a car as a better option. Bus schedule is not flexible and might prove to be a burden especially at night hours. Last but not least, the proximity of the sandy Vardia beach (opposite to the hotel) is certainly a plus for “lazy” morning or late evening or dips.

Room / We’ve been given room No24 on the 1st floor in the front side of the building, which had a balcony with a view to the port. I would classify the room in the “just ok” category. It was spacious for 2 people with a nice double bed, a stone sofa and a small kitchen with basic equipment (most probably served as a family for 3 persons). It also included a TV, an air-condition unit and a hair-dryer. The window frames and balcony shutters were very old and extremely dusty.

The bathroom was the major letdown, as it was very small and inconvenient. The rustic yellowish paint on the wall made it look really dirty while the toilet was almost glued next to the extremely small shower with the dirty curtain. I kept bumping my head on the top of the shower where the curtain “spider like” holder was placed and could not turn when in the shower. At least the room was cleaned on a daily basis, towels changed every day and sheets every 2 days.

In my opinion the cost one should pay for this room category should be around 60 – 90 euros in high season.

Services / The staff was polite and helpful. Of course in a small island like Folegandros one would expect local hotel staff to offer advice, insights and recommendations to improve your stay. This was not the case. Concierge was limited to the very basic information and replied only to typical questions.

It seemed like the hotel was ran by 3 people - Lambrini (the receptionist who also helps out with English speaking visitors), the cleaning lady (who only appeared during morning hours) and an old lady speaking Greek with a foreign accent, who seemed to do all of the rest, from preparing coffee & escorting new arrivals to cleaning public areas and washing towels.
Breakfast was also quite poor for 120 euros per night. Filter hot(!) coffee was free, but all other types of coffee were charged extra. Orange juice was not fresh, but rather concentrated juice dissolved with water. Apart from that the breakfast included jam, honey, butter, bread, cheese & ham and cereal.

Folegandros is undoubtedly a picturesque island and will offer you fabulous moments and original Greek highlights. On the other hand it is for sure quite overrated in comparison to other Greek islands and it can prove to be very expensive to the inexperienced traveler. Accommodation in Folegandros is overpriced due to the popularity of the island and Vardia Bay unfortunately is not an exception.

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms are quieter & offer better views.

Delightful location! Three of us shared a charming apartment with all the necessities. Clean simple and well maintained with air conditioning, TV and even hair driers!

The atmosphere of this 40 room (approx) complex is relaxed and comfortable with superb views and small balconies from which to enjoy the comings and goings of the little port. A simple breakfast is included in the tariff.

We were greeted at the ferry and transported to the hotel which overlooks the wharf. The classic white blue buildings and outlined cobblestones of the Cyclades Islands are everywhere but Folegandros is delightfully unspoiled.

This is not the 'partying' island like Mykanos - this experience is much more laid back. The small local restaurant owners delight in engaging you in conversation and there is a lots of time to just enjoy being somewhere different. The main township is a short bus ride away - ten minutes - and it is a delight too!

The Vardia Bay Studios proved to be a superb base for exploring Folegandros. So convenient to the ferry, there are several small beaches in immediate proximity and even a small beach bar.

The highlight was the food and the surprises in Chora! Small alleys leading to sudden plunging and stunning views. Folegandros might be off the tourist map but once you have been there you will know how special it is to have small relatively untouched Greek Islands still available where relaxing, reading, walking, swimming and indulging in good local food is still possible.

I stayed on June at vardia bay studios for 6 nights with my girlfriend. I chose the standard room because the main difference with the superior was tha it had two balconies. Anyway the view was excellent. The room was spacious clean and very nice decorated. It was very quite and it had a big balconie to eat your breakfast. The cleaning lady cleaned every day. The only minus but small was the bsthroom it was kind of small and I would like a bigger shower. Labrini the receptionist was very kind and helped us out with all our matters. The bus station is just under the studios so don't worry about that

We stayed at Vardia Bay a few weeks ago for the second time. We love Folegandros and staying at this facility. My husband had just injured his ankle (we found out 2 days ago that it was fractured and he just now had surgery). Because of his injury, the staff had a van provide transportation from the port to the door of our room. Also, Violeta brought us breakfast to our room! The breakfast was great...egg, cereal, yogurt, bread, coffee, juice. We love the view from the room over the port. The staff are great, Violeta and Lambrinh (who speaks good English and helped my friend write a note for restaurants about her wheat allergy). Granted there aren't many places to have dinner nearby, but Chora is a short bus ride away. The rooms are amazingly clean and the beach nearby has lovely pebbles. We plan to return!!
