“Great Potential, but Overlooking Details”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

My wife and I recently stayed at the Lajitas Resort over the New Year holiday. This is our 3rd stay at this resort in the middle of nowhere and on the banks of the Rio Grande in the Big Bend area.

This resort has much potential. It is a beautiful place and a good place to stay when visiting Big Bend National Park. But the management tends to overlook the smaller details. We had two rooms, 124 and 125. Room 124 was very dark even when all of the lights were turned on. Additionally, the light between the beds had a broken connection with exposed wires and was very dangerous. The other complain we had regarding the room and housekeeping was on the first day of our trip, we left the "please clean the room" sign on the door at 8 am, but when we returned after hiking in the park all day at 5 p.m., the room was still not cleaned and the towels refreshed. All in all, it is a beautiful and unique isolated resort. If the management will pay more attention to the small details, I think they will see better success.

Spursone,
Thanks for taking time to offer your comments. Your input is important to us and we appreciate your insight. We have a new mangement team at Lajitas and attention to detail is our number one priority. As you can imagine, Lajitas is a large facility and addressing all of the issues is challenging. However, I believe we have the staff to acheive great things here and will continue to work towards that goal. Your continued support will be instrumental to our success.

Thank you for choosing Lajitas.

We love Lajitas Resort and it is always fun to take people there for the first time. This year there were ten of us that met and brought in The New Year together. We have been there several times and love staying in the condo's. Golf for the guys and spa for the ladies...you can't beat that! I would recommend Lajitas Resort to anyone who loves to be busy or as a great place to just do nothing.

Room Tip: We love the condo's! Both bedrooms have fireplaces.

If you find youself in deep West Texas you could do no better than to take time to stay at this excellent destination Hotel & Spa. If you like to hike, jeep, raft, play golf or take a Sunset Dinner Ride this is the place. The Rio Grande for rafting and Big Bend National Park for hiking is right at your fingertip. You will find the staff and facilities to be first class. There is a private landing strip on the property but if you drive you will find it very enjoyable, just a little remote.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the golf course for great sunsets

Lucky us. We spent 3 nights the 23 to 26 of December at the Lajitas Resort. Stayed in the Officers Quarters in a suite that was well decorated, comfortable bed and beautiful views out the windows. Went to the Christmas eve service in the small Chapel and it was lovely. Christmas morning had the Christmas Brunch with Santa in the Restaurant.

The Bakery has some amazing pastries and sausage muffins and breakfast in the restaurant is special.

Room Tip: The office quarters have the best views

Save your money. This is not a "resort" but an overpriced motel. We had to cut our trip short due to the horrible service and food. Customers (including us) bussing our own tables, food selection is limited, tasted poorly and the worst thing is that you have NO OTHER OPTIONS unless you drive 17 miles to Terlingua. Even the GM recommended a restaurant there... isn't it his job to ensure he keeps the greenbacks in house?

The rooms are poorly lit and insulated. We had to take the sconces off the wall every night to get additional lighting. Going in winter, the heater kept kicking in every 3 minutes and the vent would rattle. The matresses were old and offered poor support.

Forget about getting email without jumping through hoops. They offer free internet, but we'd have to reset our devices' wifi constantly in order to get signal. Cell service is spotty at best and there is no 3G or 4G for 80 miles.

"General Store" is poorly stocked probably because no one ever goes there. We tried it twice, never had coffee made or milk available for purchase. Gas almost $4/gal and they only offer unleaded.

Now for the good stuff. The golf course has a great scenery and is well maintained. Good greens too. Our brush with nature happened when my daughter's ball landed 5 feet away from a rattlesnake. Yikes! We didn't even see it until we got close..

Terlingua (not the resort) has a really good restaurant called the Starlight Theater, but they only open at night. We had two awesome meals there. Get this: Chicken Fried Antelope with Lone Star beer gravy the first night and a Mixed Grill the second night. It included a Wild Boar and Venison sausage stuffed with cheese and jalapenos. Excellent place to eat and drink. 17 miles away from the motel.

If I had to do this again, I'd rent an RV and drive there. There's an RV park right across the course.

In summary. This "resort" is waay overpriced. I don't have a problem spending the money, but I do when the quality is not there.

This was our second visit to Lajitas, we enjoyed it so much on our first visit four years ago, we decided to go back. Once again we were not disappointed. We stayed in the Officers Quarters overlooking the golf course and mountains..The room was clean and spacious. We were just minutes from the bar and restaurant..One day we stayed at the resort and played the very challenging golf course. We could not believe the beautiful views from the course which has several holes chiseled into the mountains.. The finishing holes are a bit easier since they are parallel to the Rio Grande River..If you are a golfer and stay at the resort, don't miss playing this very beautiful and challenging course...PS: be sure to take lots of spare golf balls

Room Tip: We loved the Officers Quarters..

This was our first visit to the Big Bend area. We found the RV Park in Trailer Life and made a reservation. When we arrived we were pleasantly pleased with the RV Park. The manager, Tim, made our experience even more pleasurable. He was very personable and helpful in making our visit the best it could be.
