“Didn't stay, but did the Cowboy Action Shoot here - great fun!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2012

First, the Lajitas resort is a bit of an oasis in the desert. In many ways it's completely out of place, with its lush grass and golf course, modern buildings, boulevard and luxury accommodation (which you definitely pay for) - a bit of a 'Disney' resort where you escape the reality that you are in the desert! Not sure why you would want to do that though.....
That's by-the-by, we organised, through the hotel, to do the Cowboy Action Shoot and what an hour of fun that was. Live ammunition, 3 styles of gun (magnum, rifle and shotgun) shooting at various targets set up around the Wild West street mock-up that is quite literally in the middle of nowhere, off the road to Lajitas. Closely supervised, we were shown how to aim and cock the respective guns (and what not to do) and then had at it. So much fun!

Cob webs on the lamp. No elevator and no help offered with bags. Front desk called our room 15 minutes after we went to bed to see if we were in our room. If they got off their butts, climbed the steep stairs and looked at the "DO NOT DISTURB SIGN" hanging on our door, they would not known we were in and asleep- AC would not let you set temp below 70, at 106 degrees outside (day) and 85 (night) room never got cool. We asked where Big Bend Hotel is (10 miles down the road). They had no idea at the front desk. They told us the park was 40 minutes away, it was 10 minutes. Stay here if you like being like treated like a patsy, please stay here. If you want to be treated like a person, stay down the road at Big Bend Resort at the TX-170/TX-118.

Arrived to this beautiful resort to find ourselves in the Calvary section of the property. It was a beautiful rustic yet feminine room with a nice view of a long fountain in a courtyard setting. The backdrop was the breathtaking mountains! A couple negative comments about Lajitas...1) The restaurant had a very limited and over-priced menu. If you do eat ther, order the Chicken Picatta because it is very good. The service in the morning was so so at best with mediocre breakfast fare. Friday morning and they were out of Orange juice! Not a luxury resort if you run out of O.J.!
2) There was a sign that said childrens museum. It was filled with boxes...:(. So glad my grand-daughter was not with us because she would have been sadley disapointed to think she was about to enter a special place and to find it was just being used for storage.
The bar area looked very wonderful as did the main lobby and reception area. Overall it looks like the place is being neglected a bit. More staff! A couple special touches would make the guests feel much more welcomed. Have someone walk around the property and make sure furniture at the pool area actually belongs there and towels for pool use are not hidden away in a tied up plastic bag in a bin. Pick up glasswear that other guest have set outside etc. There are several stand out employees working there and some hum drum ones that don't even ask how your meal was. Too much inconsistency for a 5 star place. The resort has great potential though and it is very magical and relaxing! Oh yes...one more thing. For 3 days one of the fountains remained dry...that doe not look or feel so good!

Just got back. The place is really nice. Our room was gorgeous. Room 116, King size bed, in the Calvary quarters, had a fireplace...didn't need that; but room was really nice. Great air conditioner! Just had one meal at the restaurant, presented nicely with large portions...but missed medium rare on the steak (closer to well done); they offered to put a new steak on; but, I declined. My wife liked her meal. Pool was pretty nice...very cold this time of year; but, refreshing. The grounds are beautiful, with well maintained landscaping. Restaurant and bar area have beautiful covered patios...the dry air make it a great and comfortable place to sit in the shade. Didn't do any side trips. Spent most of our time in Big Bend National Park. Yes it's about 30miles from resort. Yes...if you just want the park...try to get a room in the park. If you really want a beautiful resort and have the $ to do the cool side things they offer...this is a neat place to stay. They were filming the 3rd season of Ammo and Attitude, a reality show with 6 women in shooting competitions. The entire resort area encompasses 26,000 acres! A huge equestrian center. Everything I saw was very well maintained. It's a very isolated part of texas. Friday through Saturday, no traffic, hardly anyone around. You really have this place to yourself!

Room Tip: Room 116 is a nice King Size Bed, opening on to a great courtyard.

Quiet and secluded. Nicest accomodations close to Big Bend. Dining room had a limited menu probably secondary to hotel being minimally occupied. Hotel and grounds are immaculate. Room was comfortable and clean. Best times were at The Thirsty Goat Saloon. Hotel is about 30 minutes from Big Bend.

Room Tip: Room 431 very quiet and next to the pool.

I don;t know where to begin. I have stayed in numerous 5 star hotels and I would rate Lajitas as a 6. What, you may ask, makes this place so special? How about luxury without pretense, how about friendly and helpful staff, second to none, how about the fact that you are made to feel like you are part of the Lajitas "family?" Upper level management made an effort to introduce themselves to me....even though I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Not only will I be visiting this amazing property, again and again, but I plan on spreading the word. A visit to Lajitas is a visit to heaven on earth. To Erica, Travis, Jennifer, Dave (the dessert was amazing), Patty, Dotty, Greg (golf) and many others whose names I cannot remember, a sincere and heartfelt "THANK YOU."

Room Tip: Every room is outstanding!!

Among the few but varying choices for acommodations in Big Bend country, we selected Lajitas Resort as the best option for our family's spring vacation. We have a taste for adventure, and were traveling with our two small children, as well as my in-laws and their children vacationing with us from Germany. Other lodgings were available, but with our large group we wanted a complete package. Big Bend area has just a few B&B's and hotels with authentic, regional flare that are clean and comfortable, and that have reasonable dining options after spending days hiking in the national park.

We reserved a house for our stay, and the Amigos House was perfect for our group of 8! The 4 children were happy that they had a large room to share, and both sets of parents were happy with the 2 ample King bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The living room, full kitchen, dining room and even washer and dryer were useful during our stay.

Recommendations/Need to know:

The drive to Big Bend NP each day was over half an hour, but it was scenic and enjoyable.

The pool was lovely and enjoyable during spring--I'm sure even more so in summer!

Dining was limited to the single restaurant open during our 4 day stay, but it was satisfying. I highly recommend sitting outside and enjoying the view of the golf course as we did for breakfasts and dinners. Other prior reviewers mentioned a buffet, but we never saw that (perhaps it's only offered during certain times of the year.) Entrees were a bit pricey, and the service was sometimes slow, but staff was pleasant.

Macha's Bakery has great muffins and pastries.

Take a drive around the resort to see what's there, and explore on foot. It's a big property! The recreated buildings reflect the history of the town as it was (the Cavalry Post, Officers Quarters, Mission, etc.) and they are interesting.

Overall, we can definitely recommend Lajitas. The price was certainly higher than other options, but we had no regrets about our choice. Happy travels!
