“Staff and service exceptional, wonderful hotel!”
Reviewed December 16, 2013

I stayed in the Piccola Vela when I was young with my family and loved it, and was nervous to come back with my boyfriend in case it had changed and didn’t live up to expectations. I was not disappointed!
We travelled with Inghams, and were given a cheerful greeting by reception who carried our bags in from the coach. Our room was ready to go when we arrived at 11am, and was very clean and fresh. The bathroom was a fine size and again, very clean.
The location is about a 5 minute walk from the lake, 10 mins at most to the town centre and ferries. The town is bustling but not overly crowded, except for the market day (Well worth a visit for the food section alone – try a bag of hot calamari to eat walking through the market!). The ferries are regular and the timetable is very easy to understand and plan your journeys. Desenzano is a great base and you can visit anywhere, either a full day or half day, and do as much or little as you like.
The Piccola Vela has a lovely pool – not enormous but more often than not we were the only people in it! There are plenty of loungers around it, with options to sit in the sun all day or pick a more shady area. The bar is just inside a door by the pool, so it’s easy to order drinks and the waiters then came to check and get us more drinks from the poolside. There is also a suntrap area higher up, as well as a large-ish garden, so plenty of places to suit all.
The staff were the heart and soul of the hotel, and all were happy to chat and help with absolutely anything. Breakfast was a delicious choice of sweet pastries, cereals, meats, cheeses, fruit and yoghurts that you could visit as often as you liked (and we did!). The staff had even learnt our usual coffee order in the first few days. In the evenings we loved chatting to the night receptionist who would serve us as late as we wanted, and in fact seemed really pleased to see us in the evenings and would give us hints and tips about the town and our Italian accents (or lack of).
On one evening they had organised a drinks reception with classical piano/violin playing outside in the sunshine, which was just wonderful and an unexpected pleasure.
The only disappointment in the trip was that our package was supposed to include halfboard food in the hotel, which had been changed to across the road. Al Carretto was a nice little restaurant, lovely staff, who even let us order a very expensive meal off the regular menu on our last night and didn’t charge us a penny! However the usual halfboard set menu was quite repetitive and not always to our taste. The food was fine, but not exceptional.
On 2 evenings we chose to eat in Piccola Vela, and their food was absolutely delicious, Al Carretto just couldn’t compare! The service again was perfect, the right mix of interaction and leaving you to yourselves. The menu was much more varied and of amazing quality. When speaking to the staff it seems that Inghams will not pay them enough to provide halfboard in the hotel anymore, but I would 100% recommend going private with the hotel. It is only a 40min taxi ride from the airport (not too expensive), and although we enjoyed Inghams trips, we could have easily done them all ourselves as the trains and ferries are so close and the reception staff would have helped us!
The staff and services in the hotel give more of a 5* feel, and you may as well enjoy 5* food with it, instead of the ‘ok’ food across the road. Besides this, the entire holiday was absolutely wonderful and we will definitely come back. Because it is family run, most of the staff were the same as when I had been 8 years before, and some of them even claimed to remember me! Even those who were new were just wonderful and turned a lovely holiday in a great location with a clean hotel, into a truly wonderful all round experience. Cannot recommend it enough!

Room Tip: Lake view at front is wonderful, but slightly quieter rooms at back overlooking garden.

We stayed in this hotel for the first week in October as part of the Great Rail Journey. We had a garden view room which I had requested at the time of booking and it lived up to our expectations. The food was very good and we enjoyed every meal that we had at the hotel. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful and I would definitely recommend this hotel.

I have been staying here since 1998 and may stay more than 20 times. They have very friendly staff that makes your stay comfortable. The hotel is very close to Desenzano center about 5 min on foot. The breakfast is more than enough. The restaurant inside is very nice. They are very friendly in front desk. There is no doubth that I stay only here in my trips.

We selected this hotel based solely upon the reviews within Trip Advisor, and I do not believe that we could have made a better choice. The Nazionale rated higher, but we preferred something less modern with more character, and the Piccola Vela is certainly that, it was simply outstanding. There was nothing I could find fault with. Our room, with a balcony overlooking the lake just a couple of hundred yards away, and with a beautiful red tiled bathroom, was superb and kept immaculately clean. The food was great, especially having breakfast each morning by the pool within a beautiful garden setting, and the excellent staff go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible, nothing being too much trouble for them. This hotel just oozes class. Desenzano itself is the perfect location for exploring the Lake Garda area, with good bus and train links to all the major towns and cities. The town itself exceeded our expectations, full of character, lively and friendly, a truly lovely place in which to stay. It was just the most perfect holiday.

Then this is the place for you. We spent a week in this hotel (31 August to 7th Sept.). But first why Desenzano? We were deliberate about the choice of Desenzano because it offered two opportunities. Firstly access to Lake Garda and secondly it is on the Milan to Venice express rail line giving access to Milan, Verona, Vicenza, Padua and Venice (of course). We visited Verona and Mantua the setting for Verdi's best opera Rigolleto. If you are a Scot also The Admirable Crichton is buried there. Vicenza was my highlight as it is home to most of the architecture of Andrea Palladio. If a highlight can have a highlight the visit to the Villa Capra La "Rotonda" qualifies (be careful it closes for lunch). Lake Garda is well documented so I won't dwell on it. One "disappointment" however was that I/we did not realise we were so close to the battlefield of Solforino - the last battle where the armies were led by ruling monarchs and also the battle which lead to the founding of the Red Cross.
Densenzano can best be described as lively, especially at night and very especially at weekends. However the Piccola Vela is about 5 - 10 mins. outside the centre such that noise was never a problem.
Some hotels excel because of their location, some because of their public spaces, I'm thinking of the Danielli in Venice - OK!!! So I'm a namedropper. The Piccola Vela excels because of its staff. They manage to tread that fine line between being helpful but not fawning, efficient but not clinical. In all, they make this hotel the jewel that it is. They should all get a 100% pay rise. We were truly sorry to leave.

Room Tip: We were given room number 29 which had a smaller balcony than the others as an adjacent store room...

Just spend a wonderfull week at this hotel. Incredible friendly staff and very nice and clean rooms. This is a family run business and they know how to take care of their customers. If you appreciate a friendly staff this hotel is highly recommended. Other then that they have a lovely garden with nice swimming pool and putting green. Breakfast is very nice and can be taken outside at the pool.

Room Tip: we stayed in the garden which is a more quite then in the front of the hotel.
