After searching numerous hotel sites for a romantic place at lake Garda we finally made our choice by booking our stay in hotel Nationale for 5 days. We have done some serious research and this was this best value for money hotel anywhere near the lake! Our stay was part of a trip from Rome (4 days), Firenze (2 days), Desenzano (5 days).

Remarkably the hotel is rated as a three star hotel, but considering all the luxury and service one could easily see it should be rated as a four star. So why is it so great?

As for all holiday locations you want to be near the main points of interest. Its very close to city centre for approximately 5 min walking, near the harbour and close to a car rental (europe car) agency. All the rooms have a good view.

We had booked a superior double room which was really great: it was very clean, comfortable and trendy. Also no outside noise. The only negative thing here are the beds, which are a bit hard. But it didn't spoil our stay.

The hotel breakfast is very fresh and divers - the pool scene is great, enough beds and umbrella's and a very nice garden - enough parking space - and last but not least the hotel is very trendy decorated.

The hotel staff is very kind and helpful except for one woman behind the service desk. I didn't recall her name, but she is the only female person (blond hair). Her attitude is very uncomfortable. If it was up to me as the hotel manager I would say get some proper education about handling hotel quest or get out. She absolutely makes no effort to make you feel welcome. Not a simple "good morning" or "good evening here is your key, have a good night"- nothing not even a simple smile.
Her attitude was the only unpleasant thing during our whole stay.

All together me and my girl recommend this hotel highly
Have a nice stay!

This hotel opened in 2007 so when we stayed there in July / August 2008 it still had that brand new look, parts of the hotel were closed (annexed building where upper rooms were closed but lower rooms were open) but no work appeared or sounded like it was going on. The staff were pleasant and helpful, Breakfast was a buffet but had an excellent selection to cater for all needs. Rooms were ample in size with minibar, flat screen tv's with a couple of satelite channels, air conditioning and all en-suite. Swimming pool was a nice size and maintained a 29 / 30 degree celsius although whatever chemical they were using to keep the pool clean seemed to discolour swimwear with an orange tinge. You could go to the pool at anytime of the day and get a sunbed. The location of this Hotel was approx a 5 minute walk to the Lake and all the restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week vacation at this hotel and would certainly recommend a visit.

My wife and I just got back from an 8 night stay at the Hotel Nazionale in Desenzano. We agree with all the previous comments and would rate the hotel very highly. We had a room on the second floor at the front, over looking the main road and did not find this at all noisey (some of the other reviewers who were at the back of the hotel, had thought that this may have been a problem- it wasnt), the benefit was however that from our balcony we had a great view of the lake and mountains.
The hotels location was excellent as previously stated (ref bars shops & restaurants) and if needed there was a local supermarket & a cash point about 50 metres down the road (on leaving the hotel turn right).
Although there was no restaurant we also enjoyed eating out and having sampled a few, found a real gem. It was located on the promenade, but a little further west, away from the main centre, opposite the Spiaggia (beach) Feltrinelli. It was called Al Ceppo, well worth the extra walk.
The only criticisms we had of the Hotel Nazionale was that being relatively late risers we found the hot breakfast items (scrambled eggs/sausage etc) were cold on several occasions, a point picked up on a prervious review. We also thought that 11.00 pm was a little early for the bar to close, especially if you had eaten late in the evening and fancied a nightcap before retiring. Oh and just one minor thing, for those who like a swim before breakfast, the pool doesnt officially before 10.00 am so you need to be quick to get a dip and catch breakfast before 10.30.

We stayed for one week at the Nazionale and the hotel could not have been a better choice. It was friendly and very clean. The rooms were big enough and very comfortable. Breakfast was good and there was a wide choice of food.
Five minutes and you were in town with its bars and restaurants.
Would recommend this hotel to all.

We recently returned from the hotel Nazionale for 1 week at end of June into early July. Temperatures were very warm (in 30’s) and humid - a couple of night time storms helped clear the air a little.

I had intended to write an in depth review but having read the previous post by Mirandaw I don’t think I could paint the hotel in any better light. That review says it all. The hotel is excellent. Unfortunately it will never gain 4 star ratings because it doesn’t offer some of the facilities required to attain that status e.g. no evening meals. That was one of the main reasons we booked the hotel because most hotels were on half board basis and some of the reviews left the impression that half board food offered at those hotels was average at best. We like eating out when on holiday so the Nazionale was ideal.

We booked superior room which was slightly larger than the first level rooms but other than that both types were equally well equipped with modern furniture and flat screen tv with mostly Italian channels along with CNN and BBC World news. From Mirandaw’s photos it looks like we almost had the same room. Ours was Room 121 on the ground floor overlooking the pool area. Nice and quiet away from the road although we didn’t hear anyone complain about road noise from the roadside rooms.

The bathrooms were very modern and our room was always spotless. I have posted some pictures - excuse the unmade bed in one of them it was taken just before we checked out and reflects our hurried bed making - not the work of the hotel staff!. Hopefully the pictures will add to those already posted to confirm that the Nazionale is a very fine boutique hotel indeed.

We always found the reception and breakfast room staff very helpful. Friendly and efficient. What more could you want from a hotel.

Excellent buffet breakfast. Nice fruit juices, fresh fruit cocktail, yoghurts, cold meats, savouries, cereals, cakes and wonderful brioche selection. I’m now a fan of brioche above French croissants. And pain chocolat Maybe it was just that this hotel that had a good quality baker but the pastries at breakfast were excellent.

Late morning and early afternoon they offered snacks such as pannini sandwiches, pizzas, lasagne and similar offerings (including chips - more like potato wedges). We only sampled them on our last day and they were perfectly adequate.

Recent reviews didn’t mention the drinks from the bar. If you come back after a night in town just before the night porter comes on you will be able to enjoy the very large measures poured by any one of the regular guys. The drinks are 6 euros but the measures must be triples or quadruples compared to home. Best not to drink too much while you’re out if you’re planning to have one of these on your return - you might be a little hung over next day!.

All in all a very nice hotel which has made us think about the types of hotel we will choose for future holidays abroad, Normally we book four star hotels but the Nazionale has certainly made us think that quality is perhaps better found in smaller boutique style hotels such as this. We will certainly give similar hotels more consideration in future.

I will also post a review of Desenzano in the forum for those interested in finding out a bit more about it as a holiday destination including information on the restaurants we tried. You will see some photos of Desenzano with this report as well. We felt that it was a perfect base for our stay.

In conclusion I have no hesitation in recommending the Hotel Nazionale to anyone looking for a smaller more intimate and stylish hotel where guests are made to feel very welcome. You get the feeling that you matter and aren’t just another faceless number. It is nice to have staff remember your name and what you like to drink as well as giving the impression that they want to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Please give the Hotel Nazionale a try - I don‘t think you‘ll be disappointed.

My boyfriend and I have just returned from a fantastic ten day holiday at the Hotel Nazionale in Desenzano. This boutique style hotel was perfection from beginning to end and (as many of the other reviews say) deserves more than its three star rating.

After a rather disastrous all inclusive two weeks spent in the Caribbean last year I was determined to redeem my holiday experience and so spent months researching into destinations for Summer 08. Having decided on the Lake Garda region of Italy I soon found Hotel Nazionale (booked though Citalia - very highly recommended) and after reading the faultless reviews on Tripadvisor went ahead and booked it. I must say, it did not disappoint!

Set on the main road through Desenzano this stylish and contemporary hotel is a five minute walk down to the harbour, restaurants, bars and shops - ideally situated. Do NOT let the absence of lake views put you off. If (like my boyfriend and I) you are lucky to have one of the side or back rooms you will be able to look out directly on to the stunning pool area. An abundance of exotic palms, brightly coloured flowers and lusciously green foliage surround the idyllic pool and jacuzzi making it a haven for holiday makers wishing to get away from it all. Not once were we forced to fight for sun loungers and for the majority of our stay we didn't even have to share the pool with anyone else!

If you (like us) favour the more contemporary style hotels over those steeped in history and ancient architecture you'll love the Nazionale! Spotlessly clean rooms in neutral shades await you! There are even flat screen LCD TVs in every room! The lounge area is fabulously chic and funky - all bright pinks and purples whilst the breakfast room in comparison is calmingly understated in chocolate and espresso browns! Breakfast itself consisted of a tempting spread of every and anything you could possibly want, from full english to pastries to fruit and yoghurt. The coffee (choose from cappuccino, americano, espresso) was, as it always is in Italy, delicious!

Don't mistake the staff's professionalism for rudeness. They were everything you want hotel staff to be: polite, efficient and extremely knowledgeable. A previous reviewer of the Nazionale used the saying 'you reap what you sow' and it was very apt indeed! Chat to the staff and they'll chat back. By our last day we were on first name terms with Cristiano and Mario.

I could carry on praising the hotel forever but I won't bore you any longer! One thing I can't emphasize enough is that this hotel is situated in a prime location to explore the surrounding area. Don't miss out on day trips to Verona (beautiful) or Venice (breathtaking), and make sure you visit the other Lake Garda towns (Sirmione and Salo to name a few). One day we hired a speed boat from the harbour (about 100 euros for two hours) where we enjoyed spectacular views of the natural landscape with the Dolomites looming in the background. Speak to your concierge (provided by your travel agent) or reception to find out more about what you can do during your time there.

Desenzano itself is a busy harbour town where history and modern day Italian living collide. Sit outside at one of the many restaurants/bars and watch the world of effortlessly chic italians go by! Also worth a visit is the weekly market (every Tuesday morning) that stretches the entire length of the lake front. For those of you where money is no object there is also an endless array of designer boutiques selling everything from the top end Prada and Gucci to middle end Benetton and Diesel. It is a retail addict's paradise!

So there we are. The Hotel Nazionale in Desenzano del Garda - a stunning hotel in an incredibly stylish setting with plenty to do and see. I couldn't recommend it more!!

A new and stylish hotel. Read reviews and agree. Rooms are beautifully appointed and although on the main road, are very quiet. A 5 -10 minute walk to train station and even closer to the ferry. The hotel has a great buffet breakfast and although they don't offer restaurant service for dinner, there are many places to eat around the water front. Desenzano is quieter than some of the other lake towns. We found that to be a blessing. The more up-market touristy places are only a ferry and or a train trip away. It was great to end your day in a beautiful, yet quiet hotel.
Had a drink in the hotel lounge bar on our last night. Should have done that on the first because we learnt so much about the area from the man in charge. Ask about travel around the lake. It doesn't have to be done by ferry. Also Venice is an easy train trip away.
The hotel is new and classy. We had a great stay
