We stayed at this hotel in July '2010 for 2 non-consecutive days on our trip to Elba island and back. We were impressed by the spacious and clean rooms. Only the shower cabin could be a little bit larger. But for the price we paid there is no real argument for complaints. On return trip we even got one double room with an extra kitchen for the same price they charged us the first time for the double room itself. The hotel looked to be freshly renewed and all the rooms were equipped with air-conditioning. The first day on our arrival the hotel was half-empty and we found the breakfast buffet was more aboundant (croissants, even prosciutto from Parma). We find, however, the choice of food for breakfast the first and the second day of our stay to be above normal standard in Italy, The parking lot for cars around the hotel is huge, so there is no problem to find a place. There are very poor indicators from the main road in Volterra guiding you to the hotel, beware of a narrow by-side road (path) through the forest - we got there by mistake the first day.
The location outside the old historical center of Volterra is not a problem - everything is within the normal walking distance and it takes you about 10-15 minutes to get to the old town provided you don't walk along the circular road for car traffic but you will step up the stone stairs leading uphill soon after you pass ESSO station. To cover such a short distance it does not make any sense to use car. If you take car, you must park somewhere (very difficult to find a parking place).
To drop a last line I will say that all the hotel staff members we had to talk to spoke pretty good English and it may be essential information for some English speaking travellers. During our stay they charged EUR 2.00 /hr for WiFi internet access.

We stayed her for three nights - on the recommendation of friends who have recently stayed here, so we were aware of it being a bit out of downtown Volterra. Room was spacious, very clean and we had a balcony with an unobstructed view overlooking the valley. Breakfast was standard, but they offered slices of meats and cheese in additon to fruit, cerals, yogurt. And our coffee was absolutely not instant as reported by another reviewer. They have a very decent expresso machine - I looked for it - as well as one in the coffee bar next to the reception desk. We stayed in for dinner for two of our nights - very satisfactory home style maels. it seemed that every other hotel guest stayed for the meals - I learned it is called "half board." Overall, the cost was very affordable.
They have internet, but their PC is not working so you can just plug your laptop to their internet cable. Only one cable so you have to line up. No charge for the internet. They do not offer Wi-Fi.
Really liked the free parking. However, in spite of being there early in the season, the lot was almost full.

Stayed: April 2010

I stayed on the hostel side of this hotel, which is...

-very clean
-bathroom are shared in between two rooms
-bathroom is clean
-very quiet (don't expect there can be interactions with other guests)

Be reminded that...
-there is NO KITCHEN and NO MICROWAVE (you can only dine in there....)
-NO WIFI INTERNET
-it is located in the outskirts of the town Volterra
(No problem if you are driving;
But if you are a backpacker like me,
Either (1) you take a bus from Volterra to get there;
OR (2) you walk for 20-30minutes with a walk passed the town, then stairs going down (from Volterra to Hostel) and at last a walk through all the hospital buildings.
(Will be quite enjoyable if weather's fine and you've got no heavy backpack...or else....)
(*anyway, remember to grab a map from the tourist office!)

Overall, it is okay with its rather low price.
In terms of cleanliness and rooms, it worths more than its price.
In terms of location, maybe you cannot blame it for its already-low price.
I believe it is the location that have lowered its price.

Just balance it out to see what you prefer!

Volterra rather full we came out in this hotel, which lies isolated (part of the building was the former meathouse of a madhouse, nice detail :)), positively because no noise from the outside. By car you´re in 5 minutes at one of the parkplaces of volterra. The good thing was the big room. Less was the lack of an airconditioning (they ´re working on it, it seems), and a van was not good enough. The matrasses too stiff for our taste (slept badly).

Buffet breakfast was also average, but continental.
We left a bit later (you should check out at 10.30) and we got twice a sneer for that, maybe right but not very client friendly.

A year ago we stayed at Rioddi in Volterra, much better, but they have small bedrooms.

Myself and my husband stay in hotels in Tuscany frequently due to work and i felt I had to write a review on this one.
What a super little hotel. Great friendly staff upon arrival.
Free and safe parking, a real bonus in Voletrra! The rooms are bright, large and spotless. Breakfast was lovely, ( coffee not great mind you) and all for 59Euros for a double room. A bit of a walk into town but with breathtakingv Views. Thanks to all at the Hotel Foresteria for a lovely stay.
