This small hotel was in a gorgeous location with beautiful grounds and a well-kept swimming pool. The owner speaks good English and was really helpful with information about local activities and places to eat. He has an extensive collection of materials about the region to share. The place itself has been an inn for many centuries. A great breakfast is served in a room with vaulted ceilings that used to be where the coaches pulled in for the night. There is also a large terrace for dining.
The room we were in (#2) had great views over the countryside. Yes, the furniture is a little dated, but not objectionable and the place was very clean. The bed was really comfortable. The bath is small with a 2x2 shower, but a neat lighted shower head with great water pressure. The inn has historical restrictions and can't change the size of the rooms, so does the best it can with the small bathrooms.
You will need a car to stay here. The walk into town is partially along steep, windy, narrow roads and we thought it would be dangerous, especially at night. However, The owner can tell you where to park outside the walls of Volterra when you go to explore the city. Volterra itself is a great place to wander around in.
