Our hosts were wonderful, very accommodating. Breakfast is great, grounds are well maintained, rooms very adequate. We arrived late in the evening and were warmly greeted. Excellent recommendation for dinner - Bado Restaurant. Don't miss this quaint Italian gem.

Room Tip: Rooms in back of hotel have great view of the valley.

We visited in August/September 2013. This was our second visit to Villa Rioddi, the last one was 2003. We will not leave it as long again and will definitely be back soon. The Hotel/Villa is run by Mirella and her son Luca. They both were very attentive and went out of their way to ensure our time spent there was perfect. To start with we wanted to stay in the same room as we had 10 years earlier in the outside part but this was already reserved, although this didn't stop Luca trying to accomodate our wish. He managed to put us next door to this in A6, (which was infact a nicer room) for our first week and then we moved to the second floor (top). The rooms are almost identical and spacious with modern shower facilities, and very clean and tidy. We had fresh towels every day!
Breakfast was a buffet style arrangement with fresh bread (made by Luca daily) and cakes (made by Mirella) meats, cheeses, fruits from the gardens, cereals, teas and very good cappuccino's. What made this special was being sat outside, but sheltered, enjoying the view as Mirella picked the fruit from the trees, washed them, then put them on your plate. Fresh Figs, Apples, Peach and grapes. There is a real family atmosphere during breakfast and Mirella provides a lovely welcome to the day. We both had Birthdays whilst there and Mirella obviously checks the passports for DOB's as she would bring Champagne to the table for breakfast and the most enormous cake or dessert.
We stayed for 2 weeks and many of the days we just lazed by the pool, just when the sun was at it's hottest Mirella would appear with icecreams, fresh chilled Melon or Figs. Heaven!
The Villa is located in a fantastic spot for a real panoramic hill-side view of the Cecina Valley, a real sun spot getting the sun all day. From here it is a bit of a walk to the town uphill, not an easy walk and parts have no path. We used the car most days as it was a bit too hot, and we parked in the underground car park which was quite reasonable and very well located safe, and well lit. The pool is very clean and is maintained every day by Luca. There were lots of sunbeds, and again these were all in good clean condition.
Unfortunately we had an incident with our hire car (we hit a deer at high speed and wrecked the Fiat Panda we were in) and the hire firm were very unhelpful. When I casually mentioned this to Luca he immediately rang the hire firm and got everything explained and sorted for us, this was such a load lifted. I'd recommend the extra waiver insurance in these cases, thankfully we had it. Just an example of the care and attention shown to guests by the hosts.
During our 2003 visit Mirella's grandchildren would be playing in the pool and were aged around 2 and 5 years old, when we mentioned them to Mirella she was very proud to introduce us to them again, though they had grown up a lot, and had very good English.
We were so sad to leave, as we had been made to feel so welcome, on the final morning we had to set off before breakfast, Mirella made a point of seeing us before we left as she had been out with her grand-daughter and bought a leaving gift for me. They had both notice the shoes I had been wearing had a small ladybird on them so they bought me an Alabaster Ladybird (Coccinella in Italian). this was so lovely of her to go to the bother and is another example of the warm welcome we recieved (I cried all the way to the airport I was so touched).
We are difinately going back soon (probably next year) and would highly recommend it to couples. Volterra is lovely and is a warrent of medievel streets

Room Tip: All rooms are similar in size, the front gets the sun in the morning and views of the town, and the...

We stayed at Hotel Villa Rioddi for two nights in September. It is what you picture in your mind when you think of a Tuscan residence. The location is great for exploring Volterra. It is approximately 1 mile from the main town so you don't have the hassle of parking and lugging your bags around the old town's narrow streets. It is a family run place and they each contribute their own recipes each morning for breakfast. The rooms are typical for Europe, clean and orderly but quite small. The shower was the smallest I have ever seen.

The staff had a wealth of information which assisted in our visits to the town and the surround area. We had a small change in our itinerary and they were very understanding and cooperative. We would recommend this to anybody wanting to visit the slower paced side of Italy.

We stayed at this Family run hotel one night when visiting Volterra in October 2012. A very relaxing place to stay, with wonderful and nicely decorated rooms. The hotel is nicely located just outside Volterra with nice views. Hotel is within walking distance of town (15 minutes). The bed was good and the buffet breakfast was very good. we did not use the swimming pool. The stay was above expectation, the price of a room was also very decent.

Room Tip: When travelling to Volterra by car this is a good location to stay, free parking and within walking...

We stayed here two nights and were very pleased. The price was very good, the breakfast was really very nice, and the room was very clean. The rooms could use some updating, and our room had a very strange shower up slippery tile steps that could be a challenge for some people. The staff was very helpful with area info and tips to make travelling around in Tuscany easier. The views of the valley are awesome, and the swimming pool looked nice and clean (we didn't use it) and would have fantastic sunset views. A very good value in an expensive area!

Stayed in October. They close November on for the off season. Great breakfast in a beautiful dining area. Visited Siena, toured vineyards and old fortified cities. Well located for touring Tuscany. Best meal was at a trattoria named La Carabaccia in the central part of town. The villa is outside the city walls. You can walk, but the easiest is to drive to the north side of the city and park outside the wall. Usually parking available. Villa had a pool but it was closed and too cold and rainy when we were there. Luca and his mother are great. Luca speaks English and will give you directions and tips for just about anything. Volterra was pretty dead at night when we were there. Very few things were open after dinner. May have been end of season.

Room Tip: Upgrade your room, otherwise you will be stuck in a non-view room. The valley below the villa is rea...

We spent a week in a double room with additional child bed. Reception was great, detailed info with lots of good tips for the area, including picturesque off-the-beaten-track villages and some restaurants also frequented by the locals. We tried several of these during the week and they really were good! Room was simple but v. clean, beds comfortable, towels changed daily. Pool area has fantastic panoramic views over the olive orchard and across the barren, rolling Tuscan hills. Pool itself was perfect. Breakfast is excellent - fine home-baked cakes and bread and the tomato salad is a dream! All in all a great place to stay!
Walking up the steep hill to Volterra for dinner takes 20 mins and will keep you fit (we did it because we wanted to drink but not drive). Avoid walking up to town if you have young children though - for short stretches you have to use the busy main road with no pavement.
