Hotel Antica Badia
Ranked #9 of 25 Hotels in Volterra
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 12, 2013

We spent a leisurely seven nights in Volterra, and this small family-run hotel proved the perfect base. If you're arriving by bus from Pontedera, it's very close to the first stop, and from the hotel it's 5-10 mins stroll uphill to the medieval city (if you turn off down some steps to the right, you can go up a quieter and shadier street instead of the main road). This position a little way out of the centre was quite welcome on the 'notte bianca' during our stay. Many travellers use this hotel as a one-night stop on a car trip, and I'm sure it's fine for that, but it's also nice to settle in for longer, as Volterra has plenty to offer and you can spend the mornings sightseeing, returning for an afternoon in the garden with its endearingly small but pleasant pool, and a foray out again in the evening for a meal in one of the many good restaurants. Our room was a good size, comfortable and quiet, with a fan and very efficient air-conditioning (cools down quickly, you don’t need to have it on all the time) and a useful fridge. Wi-fi worked most of the time, but sometimes we had to visit the lobby. Breakfast was very good, a wide selection of breads, cereals, pastries, bruschette, cheese, meats... Best of all the owners are very friendly and helpful.
If you're from outside the eurozone, make sure you book through booking.com or similar, or when trying to make a deposit you will run into difficulties with bank transfers!

Room Tip: ask for a room on the garden side, to avoid noise from the road.

we dont have any problem at all, the staff are nice, the swimming pool is clean and cold which is ideal for summer and we had a free access all the time, the breakfast though its not perfect but i liked the way they prepared in a very traditional way, its just five minutes walk to the city center, the place is not over crowded, the garage is free, the air conditioning system is working well, the water from the shower is abundant, we had a quiet and large room and most of all there is a free candies in the reception. Thank you for everything

My wife and I spent 4 nights here in a double with an ensuite bathroom. The hotel is a short 5-10 minute uphill (it's not that bad) walk to the Volterra city walls. The room was very spacious and clean with a refrigerator. Ours did not work, but the kind owner offered to let us use the refrigerator downstairs for our drinks and food. The breakfast was quite good and available from 8-10am. The owner was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. While her English was limited, we had no problem communicating.

Some tips for the area...there is a bar next door that serves basic food, cocktails, wine, beer, and coffee. Across from it is a very nice Conad grocery store with all your needs. For a nice local taste, get the salame toscano and some pecorino cheese. Also be aware that the city of Volterra in general pretty much closes its doors by 8-9pm except for a few restaurants.

After one night in another hotel which was one of the worst, Antica Badia was a very welcome change. Clean rooms, friendly staff, free internet in the lobby, and an amazing breakfast compared to other Italian locations. A 10 minute walk from the city, on a quiet street, and near a market for quick shopping. A separate entrance allows for more privacy instead on using the lobby, and free parking in the front.

We were warmly received at this hotel by Sergio and Marzia. The bedroom was clean and comfortable and a lovely breakfast was served in the newly renovated downstairs dining area- fresh bread, cheeses, meats, yoghurt, cereal, juice and coffee, topped off with fresh warm croissants from the kitchen. The hotel is located close to the town centre and private parking is a real bonus.
