There are VERY few hotels in Viterbo conveniently located near the historic center (not counting the two or three bed and breakfast places in the Medieval Quarter of Via San Pellegrino). The Hotel Tuscia is probably the best located for proximity to public transportation. I recommend it for convenience and price. It is located within the walls of the old city, and can be reached on foot from the following landmarks: Porta Fiorentina Gate (300 yards); Porta Fiorentina train station (750 yards); bus stop to Tarquinia, Tuscania, Montefiascone, Bolsena (500 yards); bus stop to Bagnaia/Villa Lante (200 yards); Piazza della Rocca (150 yards); Piazza dei Caduti (aka Piazza del Sacrario): 100 yards; Piazza del Plebiscito: 300 yards; Cathedral/Palazzo Papale: 700 yards; COTRAL bus depot at Localita' Riello: 1500 yards. It is a business-oriented hotel with 48 rooms and private facilities. A mediocre "all you can eat" breakfast is served from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. (grocery-quality items). In the rooms, you will hear the rumble of cars driving along Via Cairoli (even from the rooms in the back). The rooms, which are rather small but adequate, are not well sound-proofed. Hotel prices are very moderate, making it a good value for the money. Hotel staff are very friendly, particularly the pretty lady who prepares breakfast. There is an internet point in the lobby which can be used free of charge (useful to check train and bus schedules, opening hours of city landmarks and museums, as well as to catch up on the international news). NOTE: For couples seeking a "romantic" venue, choose one of the B/Bs in the Via San Pellegrino Distict (near Piazza San Carluccio). These B/Bs are about 800 yards from the Porta Romana train station (Trenitalia trains to Rome).
