“Step back in time”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

We recently stayed at Villa Farinella with our ten year old daughter and thoroughly enjoyed it. As stated by the other reviewers, Rita is a delightful and extremely helpful and knowledgeable hostess. We were given a number of tips about the region that made it an interesting stay. The villa has been beautifully maintained and elegantly furnished and feels like a step back in time. The many personal effects and family photos add to the intimacy of what was once a family home. We also stayed in the "pink" room and agree this is the room to request. Breakfast is fairly simple and is probably the only area that could be improved.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for the pink suite.

This is a lovely Bed and Breakfast, it is a very personal experience like most b and b's are. The nice thing about Villa Farinella is it is spacious yet comforting, quiet but not too quiet. The owner is very interesting has a lot to say to help you out and pass on tips of where to go and what to see, she is warm and welcoming. The only room to stay in, in my opinion, is the suite that is pink. Well worth the price. The room overlooks the farm land in the back of the villa and it is idyllic. Just down the road is an excellent restaurant called Il Bistro. It has a Great wine list and home cooked sophisticated food. The villa is just outside Viterbo and well situated to drive to see Villa Lante one of the great gardens in Italy which was our reason for staying there. I would definitely go back if we wanted to take friends to see Villa Lante.

Room Tip: ask for the pink room

My husband and I spent two nights in the suite of the Villa Farinella just outside the centre of Viterbo. Rita and Laura couldn't have made us more welcome. They really made us feel as if we were friends who had just come to stay. The suite is definitely one of the largest rooms we've ever stayed in during our visits to Italy. Once you are off the main road at La Quercia, and you drive through the gates at the top of via Capodistria you are in another world. Peace and quiet reign. We chatted with Rita and Laura often during our visit and learnt so much about the local area that we'd never have known from our books. It would be lovely to return.

We loved the charm of the house and the way it is decorated. We felt very welcome. You can enjoy breakfast in a relaxed environment en have a nice chat with the lady of the villa. She and her son were very helpfull planning your daytrip for example to Rome.

Villa Farinella has been in your host's family for a few generations - and out the window you'll see the fields which are part of the estate. Your hosts are the delightful Rita - who was born in the bedroom we occupied, and her charming son Maurizio - both of whom speak English, and Rita also speaks French. We loved everything about this place - easy to find on a suburban street - but once you drive through the gate, you realize you are in a special villa with grounds all around it. The interiors are uniquely decorated and you have 2 large living rooms to use while you are there - furnished with all kinds of interesting books, magazines, photos of Marurizio's grandmother as a young woman. Our 13 yr old daughter loved playing with the alabaster Chinese Checkers set.

We stayed in the biggest room - which has a wide super comfortable bed, and a single bed for our daughter. Big, airy, filled with period furniture (of maybe the 1930s), wonderful tile floor, and breathtaking vaulted ceiling painted elaborately in shades of pink. This came with spacious bathroom, good shower, everything worked well.

Wish we had more than one night here - but had a flight to catch the next day. Nearby attractions were a wonderful renaissance garden at Bagnaia (at the Cardinal's Summer home) and the medieval walled town of Viterbo - we drove into the middle of town in the evening, parked there, had wonderful pizza outddors in a piazza, and walked around admiring the architecture. Maurizio had supplied us with a town map and showed us where the most interesting walk would be.

Would totally recommend this B&B, and the price is right too.

We arrived at Villa Farinella late and very tired. The gates opened and we saw an old villa in the countryside and were so happy as we entered. It is just what you expect an old, simple family villa to be-- high ceilings, huge rooms, hand painted walls.

Our room was the "suite" which is one very large bedroom with arched ceilings and gorgeous trompe de l'oeil in pink and taupe. It has a big bed, a lounging couch, and other pieces of furniture. There is a very big window with a view of the countryside. The bathroom is simple but nice-- beautiful old tile, a big tub, and big window. (my husband actually did some major birding from this window and got two life-birds just looking out from the room!)

Breakfast is in the living room and is simple but friendly and very personal. They keep lemon cello and italian cookies out for guests to enjoy any time. They give you bottled water and offer a small 'fridge for guests. We were going to the "wild spas" out in the countryside... but the owner wanted us to go to the big pool/terme as well and insisted we take her membership card which would offer us a discount on the rate. she was very kind and helpful, as was her son. We wanted to stay a week rather than a few days.

A few words about viterbo. Go there ! We have been to the usual places in tuscany and umbria and wanted to find more thermal water, so chose Viterbo for its wild spas. They were fantastic, but there were so many great towns within a fairly short drive that we hadn't really heard much about. I really recommend Viterbo as a base for exploring the Lazio region.

I must add a caution-- we checked out the other 3 rooms in the villa and they were cute but pretty small and just didn't compare.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The B&B Farinella, established since 1999, found its aim in bringing new life and preserve to abandon a wonderful country house whose structure kept wearing down rapidly. We made the decision to restore and then open it to guests, up to six, who prefers to stay in a proper and fascinating old country house. Our hospitality is way far different from the classical hotel one: we bring more familiarity as well as intimacy in our service. Inspired from and as for the classic Irish B&B, you can enjoy a different and more characteristic atmosphere: you'll never wake up at the noises of traffic, more likely you could be awaked at birdies singing on the horse-chestnuts by the garden. ... more   less
