“not for bank holidays”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

rather a nice place to enjoy a termal day off, but very much crowded in week-ends and holidays. this is nonetheless a standard for such places, in Italy at least.

the structure, steps away from the city wall, is well built, equipped and mantained, and is divided into two parts thereof one is the termal pool and the other one is the spa, thus enabling you to resolve wether or not taking the bath only or treating yourself with other (quite expensive) pleasures.

the mess in the dressing room, which is not split by Ladies and Gentlemen, is almost the same you can happen to find in Budapest or Ischia, with electronic keys for cabinets, not many cabins and a reliable cloakroom.

the impressive termal pool is then pure pleasure, expecially in winter and after the sunset, while the spa is quite striking, expecially in the grotto.

as to is their catering, the choice of courses and the food quality seems to be more than amendable.

“Hot Springs of the Popes: Oh So Relaxing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

Are your feet a little sore from long walks on Roman cobblestones? Your neck a little stiff from oo-ing and ah-ing stratospheric frescoes? Your arms a bit fatigued from carrying treasures and trickets? Then head for the Terme dei Papi, or hot springs of the popes, in Viterbo. About an hour or so north of Rome, the sulphur springs have all the amenities you need to spend a few hours floating on foam noodles in a lusciously warm and large hotel pool, fed by natural hot springs, which have been flowing since ancient times. Cheerful and informative attendants help you find your way to sparkling clean changing rooms and lockers, If you forget your swim suit and flip-flops, as I did, a handy shop on the premises offers mens' and womens' swimsuits and nice rubbery clogs for sale in a wide range of sizes. Would you believe only 30 euro for a fully lined nylon tank suit in black or dark brown and made in Italy? How about 6 euro for a pair of adjustable clogs? (Okay, so the clogs are made in China, but 6 euro? Come on!) There's also a restaurant adjacent to the pool.

Had enough papal pampering? Go down the road a little ways to a big field marked only by a wooden fence. Find the fence opening (look hard, it's not huge) and walk across the field. Just a few feet away you will see two shallow natural pools surrounded by well-worn rock. Peek in the pools and feast your eyes on green mud. Climb down into the warm water, also fed by hot springs, and slather what looks like mint gelato all over your body, then climb up and bake in the sun. Wash off the mud after at least 20 minutes of drying time, and your skin will feel divine. Don't forget to bring a camera for Halloween photos.

“Lovely thermal spa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2012

Went for the saturday night session. It was quite expensive but a very nice experience. You'll need to take a towel as I didn't spot any opportunity to hire one, and a dressing gown and slippers would be a good idea too but not essential. Not easy to find in the dark with sat nav but its down the lane on the right if you get to the gates of the hotel its attached to.
