Cormoran

A quiet, family resort for your holidays. I was there almost accidentally and the staff was startled to see three young men chatting with ladies in their 70's. The beach is big and very nice, the sea clean. It's a moderately cheap accomodation if you take an apartment for four people but overprices as an hotel, though they make you pay extras whenever they can. The bar is nice but very expensive and getting a good cocktail is almost impossible. Villasimius town is quite near but hasn't many attractions. If you want to explore the magnificent (but all Sardinia is magnificent) surroundings you should rent a car. The staff at the front desk speak many languages, are very helpful and well organized. Again, if you're young and love parties, try some other place ( NE of sardinia would be the best option for you)

Lets get the pros out of the way. Good location near the beach.. but much better beaches in Sardinia by a mile. Also good restaurants nearby. but it is far from town which can be a disadvantage.

The cons. Its clean but basic. Definitely not four star and significantly overpriced for what they offer. We had accommodation with the Grand Title of 'Two Bedroomed Apartment'. This basically was a small room with two singles and a decent sized room with a double with a small shower and a tiny kitchen in the corridor next to the toilet. No kettle or microwave (or toaster but that may be understandable). It is not really self catering. The meals are an extortion at 45 per head including for our three year old. Infect every thing is an extortion. So much so that they have a deal with a cab company that charges almost 20% more than other cabs. I agree with other reviewers that the reception is not friendly at all. The beach bar and cleaning staff were however friendly.

I do not understand why management or the owners up the service standards and provide better value for money as the location has potential. I guess they get the occupancy they want. Anyway we travelled across Sardinia and had much better accommodation for much better value and with a much much more friendly reception.

We spent 6 days at this hotel with our 10-month-old son. The good: it's one of the few hotels in the area which are directly on the beach, which is invaluable when you travel with small children (and the beach is nice, even though there are more beautiful beaches in Sardinia); it's not too big so you don't feel like it's overcrowded even in the high season, you don't need to fight for tables at breakfast or for chairs on the beach (you actually get assigned an umbrella and chairs for the duration of your stay); there is a very nice and well maintained garden where you can spend the midday hours in the shadow, away from the heat, which again is great for small kids; finally our room (according to the reception staff one of the best in the hotel) was very spacious, with a big modern bathroom and a nice balcony. We did not participate in any of the animation activities but they seemed quite popular, esp. the kids' club. The not so good: it seems like the rooms where renovated but not the common areas, esp. the breakfast area looks quite outdated and not a 4 star hotel; the pool is quite small and closes between 1 and 3 p.m.; finally breakfast is not very impressive and consists mostly of cakes and other sweet buns, very little fruit and just one hot option (scrambled eggs). Lastly, even though we were very happy with our stay, we felt the hotel to be overpriced for what it had to offer and not completely up to 4 star standards; then again most hotels in Sardinia seem expensive. Other info worth noting: hotel guests were mostly Italian; if you don't plan to eat dinners at the hotel; there are 2 restaurants and a convenience store in walking distance, but if you want to eat outside of the hotel and visit other beaches in the area, best to rent a car.

Room Tip: If you are traveling with a baby stroller, note that there are no elevators in the hotel so you may...

The Cormoran has a great location at a beautiful beach. We had a seafront superior room, wich was also very nice. But for the price it was no way near what it should have been.

Staff at the reception not very interested in our stay. Never said hello etc. We asked if it was possible to rent a boat in Villasimius, they said no. Same day we went into the port and rented a boat from a very nice company.

Breakfast was ok. Cleaning staff very friendly:)

We booked a prepaid stay, for 8 nights at approx EUR 370 pr night. After 4 nights we had to leave because of a family emergency. I tried to get a refund for the last three nights, or at least one or two, but they refused. So we payd EUR 1110 for not staying at the hotel. I know it was the contract, but anyway.

Our family of four stayed for two weeks in this resort, which includes a hotel, apartments, bungalows and small villas. It sounds huge but it's not. Although the place filled up the second week we were there, the beach is so long and wide and the property is on a large piece of land, we rarely felt cramped or stuck in the crowd.

The pros: beautiful beach and pleasant tree-filled property, plus two pools; we rented one of the apartments, which was perfect for us size-wise; We stayed on the top floor -- probably better than on the ground floor, although those units have two terraces, front and back; the balconies of the top floor units have been converted into small eat-in kitchens, albeit open to fresh air and nice views thanks to the sliding glass doors. Good beds, lots of storage space, drawers, wardrobes. Quiet A/C (filters could be changed though). B/c we are late sleepers, we had breakfast in the room, which worked out perfectly with stove, fridge, etc and supplies from the little grocery a 5 min walk away or the larger supermarket in town. For lunch, we'd either bring food to the beach, eat in our room or dine at the buffet near the pool, which was quite good although pricey -- salads, seafood, grilled meat, fresh fruit. (Much better than dinner). For dinner, we bought two carnets of 7 nights and dined in the restaurant.

The cons: The resort is a refurbished property and the apartments are a bit worn out. The grounds though are well maintained -- beach, pool areas, open spaces all nice. Restaurant is fine. We only saw our apartment -- which was dated -- so wonder about the age of the hotel rooms, bungalows and villas. Word from one of the waiters is that the apts will be refurnished this winter. Worth asking about for 2014.

Overall, the hotel staff is polite and pleasant -- the beach guys, bar staff, etc, but the pple at the reception desk, although not rude, were rather sniffy from the moment we checked in. They warmed up but rarely greeted us when we passed by, which was several times a day for 14 consecutive days. We were not really impressed. It would have been nice if the owners who dined each night at the same table, had circulated to say hello to all the guests, not just a few. A personal touch often makes the difference between a very good hotel and an excellent one.

Although the apartment was right for us in many ways, the furniture and fixtures have not been updated in years, the fridge is located in the main bedroom (and whirls away at night unless you turn if off or down); the fan in the bathroom sounds like the bldging is going to take off and the shower is nearly too small for one person. And watch out for the hot water -- the temp on the boiler is turned up so high (b/c it's pretty small), the H20 might burn you or your child. I don't know about the hotel rooms or other accommodations, but our apt block did get noisy in the mornings -- crying babies, kids out on the passageway.

The restaurant: the food is probably the one black mark of this complex. Obviously run by a chef who has a lot of ideas but lacks proper training, nearly every meal he or she prepared was below par, and served tepid at best. No clue about how to cook fish. We resorted to seeking out the simplest items on the menu or ordering pasta con sugo semplice, carne arrosto and ice cream for dessert. The "gran buffet" of vegetables was just sad -- worse than in a hospital.

Villasimius is the closest town -- it has what you need but is not very picturesque. When we tire of the beach, we like to visit a nice town to do some shopping, take a walk, perhaps grab a drink and some dinner. Alghero, on the west side of the island is perfect for that. Highly recommend it. This town, on the other hand, is nothing special.

Overall, the Cormoran offers a pleasant and relaxing stay and we may return -- price, atmosphere and very convenient accommodations. It would be great if the food would be improved.

From the moment we arrived to check out we had a great time. Although early in the season the staff were up to speed. We were given a sea view! From our apartment to the pool and the private beach, it was all great. Jean at breakfast was a true gent who provided a friendly efficient service.

The only negative was the location, although peacefully it was a little remote. Taxis are extortionate, not the fault of the Cormoran. Couldn't recommend it enough.

Room Tip: Hire a car, and try the breakfast at least once!
