“VIAREGGINO,VIAREGGIO, VERSILIAl Carnevale 2014”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

For the last 140yrs, in Viareggio, Tuscany, has held a Carnival Parade usually 40 days before Easter. Is one of the most famous in Italy. It’s a real spectacle of papier-mâché and iron floats running along the beach boulevards. These remarkable works of pop art are up to 40 ft. high and pulled by concealed tractors. Teams of men and women inside work the multiple moving parts manually, manipulating an arrangement of ropes, pulleys and levers. This year’s festivities began on February 16 and concluded on March 9 with fireworks on the beach! The most recurring topics were the Political Satires with the government leaders behind slogans, one of which is: "What's the difference between believing in political powers and Santa Claus? Nothing." There’s sleigh of former Prime Minister Enrico Letta adorned with the sign "For Sale. The new Prime Minister and Florence and former mayor, Matteo Renzi is depicted as a modern-day take off of Lorenzo dè Medici. "Renzi the Magnificent" is portrayed with Palazzo Vecchio behind him as he aspires to greater power. The 1st price winner was: The Development of the Internet and Technology, which was represented by a gigantic metal spider. 2nd: “Hysteria” which analyses the actual Italian political crisis. The Love Revolution by John Lennon, got 3rd price, followed the “Fight against discrimination” led by Freddie Mercury, the Revulsion for war and weapons.

“Perhaps not unmissable but so nice!”
Reviewed January 12, 2014 via mobile

Let's be honest: Viareggio's passeggiata is not rich of historical spots, does not have a particular monumental value and is not perfectly kept (as it should)...
Nonetheless it preserves a peculiar atmosphere that makes it worth visiting!
One sure thing is that the walking area is a true local spot: all the locals love to walk by, show nice dresses, taste ice cream in every season of the year. Atmosphere is relaxed and you can walk for something like three km in a complete pedestrian environment.
Viareggio is relatively young for Italian standards but for sure a place with a personality

“Small town ! does not offer anything special”
Reviewed December 19, 2013

Small town that does not really offer much ! No important monuments like other Italian cities ! Be careful when walking because of the town and Torre del Lago do not have footpaths ! Beware of cars .The local council just think about carnevale, very corrupt local council also that do very little to improve the town .I think this little town is dead no worth a visit.

“Great prominade with shops open on a Sunday. Busy in Winter too!”
Reviewed December 13, 2013

We drove here after visiting the leaning tower of Pisa. It was gorgeous even in winter. Apparently all the locals from all the surrounding towns visit on a Sunday as it has all it's stores open. Very chilly walking along the coast in December late afternoon but very fashionable with everyone in their designer puffers or furs. I would definitely recommend to visit.
