We stayed at the Grand Hotel Viareggio for 14 days from the 18th of June to the second of July. We booked via Booking, com who only offered a rear bedroom with breakfast but we contacted the hotel manager and managed to agree to pay the extra for a front sea view with a balcony and also half board. His arrangements were just as agreed when we checked in. The room was a reasonable size well equipped with air con and a fridge a safe and reasonable wardrobe space. Tea and Coffee were provided and the room was well serviced on a daily basis. The view from the balcony was spectacular with a full view of the bay, the promenade and the beach which extended for several miles in both directions ( see photos)
The breakfast was held in the indoor restaurant and was adequate although the range of food available on the buffet was limited compared to other hotels I have stayed at recently, although you could ask if you wanted say a boiled egg rather than the omelettes they served daily. The evening dinner was held mainly in the open air which was very nice except when it was rather chilly one evening and many guests abandoned the outside area and ate in the indoor restaurant which caused a lot of confusion for the staff.
In Wednesday and Sunday dinner was accompanied by live music and on the Saturday nights they had a help yourself buffet for all courses . At other times the first course a salad course was buffet style while the starter, main course and sweet course was served to you. The dinner could also be ordered at breakfast if you wanted to do which we found easier as you could come in in the evening and go straight to the buffet rather than wait for the Head waiter to get your order.
The wine list was good with a reasonable range of wines from the region.
Outside there was a pool area served with a small bar serving drinks coffee ice cream etc and lunches. There were ample beds in the area and there was also a garden with chairs and a couple of hammocks.
We found the service of the staff to be very good and friendly and the front desk were very helpful if you needed advice and assistance.
The hotel is quite old being built around 1880's and it was one of the first in Viareggio its position is therefore excellent being about halfway along the extensive promenade, there is a fairly busy road outside but although this could be noisy sometimes in the early evening it didn't gives us any sleepless nights and it was worth taking a front sea room just for the view and the fact that you could sunbathe off the balcony until it was time to go down to dinner.
The hotel arranged trips for us while we there to Florence Lucca and Pisa with a guide and coach and although you can go by train to all these place and also by bus to Lucca and Pisa we found the use of a guide to be of good value. Florence was a full day and the others a half day. We also visited the other local seaside resorts of Forte dei Marmi with its Designer shops like Prad ,Gucci etc and also Lido di Camaimore.
We just didn't have the time to organise a trip to Sienna which was also on offer.
If you your looking for a lovely seaside holiday with the opportunity to go sightseeing some great cities and towns in Tuscany but also like a bit of retails therapy then Viareggio is the place to go and this hotel is right in the middle of it with excellent service and good accommodation. We booked half board but there plenty of local places to eat if you don't want to eat at night in the hotel ,Most of the guests were couples and there was little sign of children but this may have been because of the time of year.
