We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Royal. We found it a very clean and well ordered Hotel. It is situated on the busy promanade are of the resort. It is an impreesive building that stands out from the rest of the Hotels. Inside the main areas are eligent and well furnished. Thje rooms are of a good size and modern but in keeping with the period of the building, We traveled with Citalia and had booked a seaview room on half board. We were given a room with a balcolny and enjoyed this extra facility alot . We had a room on the third floor central in the front an excellent location, One word of warning this is Italy and so traffic noise can be heard and that of other tourists but soon this becomes the norm. The Gardens and pool area are very nice and a small bar/restraunt can be found next to the pool. Life guard was present. We found all the staff both friendly and helpful and I had occassion to need a dentist and was given every assistance to get the services of an english speaking one who was excellent. The train station is about 20 mins walk from the hotel and you can reach Florence in about one hour and three quarters at a cost of only 6.80 euro. Piza and Lucca also can be reached by train. A local bus stops out side the hotel and goes to Piza 3 euro. We found a mixture of touring the local places of interest and also a relaxing time available here.Meal times are good being from 07.30 am to 10.30 for breakfast and 19.30 to 21.00 for dinner. Our only concern were the evening meals, its difficult to say exactly what but lets say the starters and sweets are fine but the main meal lacked something. Also if you ride a bike hire is available and the area is flat so you can go for miles. Use of a beach oposite is available with towels supplied included if with a company like Citalia but extra if not.
Overall we had a great stay and would recommend it. We found Citalia very good as well and had no problems the rep at the hotel was also excellent.

Room Tip: well worth getting a seaview room with balcolny

We stayed at the Grand Royal for 2 weeks in late August and had a wonderful stay. The hotel was spotless and the rooms were large and indeed quite grand. We had a sea view room on the first floor. The hotel is only about 100 meters from the beach across Via Carducci. The beach was large and wide and very clean. There was a good sized outdoor swimming pool which was next to a large, quiet garden area that was very peaceful and equipped with hammocks and an aviary. The food was excellent with a wide selection at breakfast and a four course meal each evening. The waiters were very friendly, always helpful and good fun. Two waiters in particular deserve a mention; Stefano and Luca were great and always made meal times very enjoyable. Two other members of staff also deserve a mention; Guiseppe (who worked mainly in the poolside bar) was very friendly and made wonderful cocktails and Lucia (who worked in the hotel bar) always gave excellent service with a smile. Overall this is a wonderful hotel with delightful, friendly staff and I would definitely recommend it. Bravissimo the Grand Hotel Royal Viarreggio! Non vediamo l'ora di ritornarci! Grazie.

Room Tip: a corner room is much bigger boasting two huge windows,

Having read some of the reviews pre holiday I had mixed feelings on what to expect but on arrival these were swept away. The hotel must have gone through extensive refurbishing as all areas we saw were spotless and decorated to a high standard. There was obviously some areas that were worn or unrepairable but these were mainly chipped and unreplaceable ceramic floor tiles. It is truly a grand hotel supported by polite well groomed staff at all levels. The only weak areas were at dining, the main course at dinner rarely came with vegetables, and the definition of braising steak, plus a more varied choice of back ground music would be nice, this being the home of Puccini and the land of opera, I think they only have 2 CD's in their collection!! It's a shame the grand piano on view was not brought into use!! If you have a choice of room(funds and availability at time of booking) pick the sea view or an inside room at high level, as the lower inside level floors look onto an asphelt roof.
The private beach across the road (ANITA) with which the hotel has reserved facilites is also spotless and well run with good food and drink selections at decent prices, 2 deck chairs and shade come with room, a bed can be hired for 8 euros a per day, the sand and water, lovely and clean too.
Clothes shopping on the front is very nice but VERY expensive!!! be warned guys!!!!
This is the only resort I have visited where the marina has no chic bars and restaurants, such a shame!
Access to all cities Florence etc, excellent whether by road or rail.
Will definately be back.

Room Tip: Inside rooms low level look onto asphelt roof no view at all!!!

I won't go on and on about how much we loved our stay here. Although the front desk (one woman in particular) could use a quick refresher on how not to scowl at customers who don't speak Italian and have lots of questions; the hotel itself was a dream. The rooms and bathrooms were large and extremely clean. The pool was a DREAM to have considering the high costs of going to the beach every day (who privatizes an entire strip of beach on a coastal town !? uch...) and the hotel was gorgeous. The hotel safe was included and there was a security gaurd patroling the interior of the grounds. Wifi was also provided.

If we ever go to Viareggio again, we would definitely stay in this hotel again. This is without a doubt the #2 hotel in the area.

I stayed at this hotel with my sister for six nights. This is a fantastic hotel, spotlessly clean and great location. The food is of a very high standard with a great choice for breakfast which sets you up for the day and the dinner consisting of four courses, the first course is a fabulous buffet with so much to choose from. The staff are very professional, friendly, helpful and willing to cater to your every need. I would particularly like to mention Gisippe who is such a charmer and welcome face behind the bar, not to mention he makes the best cocktails in Viareggio and beyond. We had a lovely large room with a sea view and splendid balcony. I have no doubt the training given to the staff at this hotel is of a very high standard, as their professionalism shines though, so full compliments to the Manager and his team. I look forward to returning to this hotel again in the not too distant future... I hope!!.

Lovely hotel, we had a large room but no sea view but not a problem as you don't spend much time in your room. Food was good on the whole, I have to agree with another review about the eggs, they were always overcooked but there was plenty of other things to eat so not a great problem. Service at the evening meal could be slow and one night after waiting for over an hour we just gave up on dessert, think there was a problem in the kitchen and perhaps we should have been told what was wrong. One night braising steak was on the menu my husband's was lovely and tender but mine was definitely not braising steak and as there were no steak knives I just gave up trying to cut mine. Overall a very nice hotel, splendid staff who were very helpful and would go back there.

My wife and I have just returned from a two week stay at this hotel. We last stayed there 15 years ago. Food is now really good (though I can't comment on the hot breakfast) Dinner is four courses, the first being a buffet with some 20 different dishes. Ingredients and standard of cooking were all very good. Waiter service was both charming and efficient. I would agree with the comments that the music CD's need to be changed a little more often, however. We had a sea view room with balcony. It was of a good size as was also the bathroom and both were well equipped and furnished. The bath was a little on the small side but manageable. Reception, porters and the maintenance man (we had trouble with a blind) were unfailingly helpful and friendly. We would recommend this hotel most strongly.

If you go to Viareggio, try the boat trip to Le Cinque Terre. It leaves from Molo del Grieco every morning and at 30 Euros, it is half the price of similar trips offered by tour companies. No need to book. Just turn up 10 minutes before sailing.

Room Tip: Sea view and balcony are worth the extra cost. Reasonably quiet and you get more space
