We stayed in The President for a week in August and we would agreed with all the comments about the great staff and food. The room we had was perfectly acceptable with a very comfortable bed. We unfortunately had a view overlooking a building site and crane, but apart from that the hotel was really good.
One thing to bear in mind is that this hotel has no outside space whatsoever and no pool. We knew this before we booked but it surprised us how much we missed being able to just chill by a pool or sit outside with a drink. Although you get access to the beach and the pool at a couple of venues across the road, it's not the same so be sure this will not bother you. To go in the pool you have to buy a swimming cap as they are compulsory.
Viareggio itself was nothing special, and we were glad we booked several trips with Thomsons. We went to Portofino, Pisa, Lucca and Florence. The trips were all very well organised with excellent local guides who all spoke very good English. If you do the Florence trip watch out for pickpockets. We saw one female who was carrying a map to make her look more like a tourist who waited until an old man lifted his arms to take a photo and she dipped his bag.
We hired a car and drove south into the Tuscan countryside with fields of Sunflowers, and it was beautiful. We went to San Gimignano which was an incredible medieval walled city and well worth a visit.
To sum up, Viareggio was a little bit like an Italian version of Brighton or Bournemouth, and the Hotel President was excellent as long as you could live with the lack of outside space. The Thomson rep by the way was totally superb.
