“Wonderful hospitality”
Reviewed August 14, 2006

We have just returned home from a 10 day stay in this hotel. It is ideally situated right on the long promenade of Viareggio. The resort is very Italian and to the English the architecture on the sea side of the promenade is a little quirky.
The hotel does not have a swimming pool but has an arrangement with a private beach for it's guests. (12e per person per day - deck chair and umbrella). We selected the cheapest rooms so that we could invest heavily in the local seafood and wine. Also these rooms are situated in a central well of the hotel building - they have an austere outlook but are very peaceful. The rooms are comfortable, with excellent bathroom, are kept immaculately clean and serviced twice daily.

The public rooms on the ground floor - the entrance, reception, bar and lounge - are very impressive. There is a wonderful roof top restaurant with veranda and views out to sea and the mountains.

The real delight of this hotel is the staff and the food! Every member of staff one meets is super efficient and super friendly.
The cleaning staff keep your room and everywhere else spotlessly clean. The reception staff work extemely hard at answering all your questions (all speak excellent English) and arranging for cars, restaurant bookings outside the hotel and making sure that everything runs smoothly on those special trips. The restaurant staff provide wonderful cuisine, served immaculately in lovely surroundings.

We felt we were treated like friends by every member of staff and one of the reception staff even came out on to the steps of the hotel to wave us off as we left for the airport in our taxi.

Thank you, all at the Plaza e de Russie Hotel.

We stayed in the hotel for 6 days this September. I had booked the hotel on the recommendations from previous Tripadvisor reviews. The hotel did live up to our expectations. On arrival we were upgraded to a deluxe room which had a high ceiling and was spacious. The bathroom was small but very well stocked and equipped (no shortage of good quality towels). The breakfasts were excellent and we didn't have to get up too early to have it either. Breakfast was open until 10.45am. We also had dinner in the Terrace Restaurant. The food and service was very good. We regret not dining there more often. The service overall was excellent. They were very helpful. I would definetly recommend this hotel!!

As many others have stated it is a very nice hotel, with very helpful staff, and excellent food.

My problem was just that I went there to relax, but the rooms are not very well noise-protected. It was almost impossible to sleep after 9 am when the cleaning-ladies started their work in the hallways. You hear almost everything they do. So, as I like to sleep in the mornings this was not the hotel for me. I stayed in a single room at the 3rd floor.

We stayed for four nights in July and had booked a side sea view room, but the only way we could see the sea was to lean out of the window. The room was exceptionally small but very clean. Bed linen was changed daily, but the sheets were very rough in texture. However, the food and the service were exceptional. Breakfast includes standard continental, cereals, fruit juices, fruit, hams, cheeses, scrambled eggs and bacon and tiny sweet cakes. The evening meal is well worth booking and of superb quality, comprising four courses with dishes such as sautéed squid with pasta, sea bream, boned skate wing in a Mediterranean sauce, guinea fowl, stuffed pigeon, black pasta with steamed prawns, red deer, rack of lamb, the list is endless and all of equal delight. Good wine list and equally good deserts.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Immaculately clean at all times. Rooms cleaned regularly - all linen changed daily. Beautiful restaurant on rooftop - well worth treating yourself to meal at night - breakfasts also excellent. Situated near picturesque harbour and overlooking beach. Excellent value for money

We just returned from a 6 days stay in the Plaza Hotel. We had a nice stay in this elegant hotel, with its superb cleanliness and extremely helpful and friendly staff. The entrance is rather impressive with its stylish lobby with marble floor and antiques and fresh flowers all over the place. The top-floor restaurant with panoramic terrace was good. Unfortunately it was too cold to sit on the terrace. The breakfast was outstanding. Our room was situated at the sea front. There is quite a bit of traffic noise during the night and early morning so watch out for that if you are a light sleeper.
The bathroom was kept very clean. The only drawback is the extremely small entrance to the shower compartment and the leaking compartment doors. After taking a shower the bathroom looked like a swimming pool. A sort of handrail in the shower compartment would have been very handy to get in and out easier.

This is a very nice hotel, characterised by quality furnishings, superb cleanliness and extremely helpful and friendly staff. Other reviewers have picked up the good points so I thought I'd highlight one or two weaknesses.

Be careful about the 'side sea view' rooms. To see the sea from our room, you actually had to hang out of the window because there are buildings across the road in front of the beach which obscured the view from the second floor room. To their credit, they gave us a free upgrade to a third floor room with front sea view which was lovely, but only after we argued with the manager and only because it was low season so he had plenty of free rooms. He argued that the hotel doesn't claim the side rooms have sea view, but we booked through Magic who do make that claim.

Also, my mother-in-law had a single room which was small and dark and faced a brick wall with no view at all. Again, on complaining she got upgraded to a double with front sea view but, again, you might not get that in high season. My mother-in-law also suffered because there is no handrail on the stairs at the main entrance and she had difficulty getting up and down (she walks with a stick). There is another way in using a ramp but it is not easy to get at and you need someone to let you in and out.

Also, there is quite a bit of traffic noise during the night and early morning so watch out for that if you are a light sleeper. The traffic is the price you pay for a sea view room.

Finally, this is quite a small hotel so there isn't much going on, no pool or gym, no grounds, and the lounge was largely empty, so you need to be either in your room or out and about.

However, don't get the wrong idea. We had a very nice time and would recommend the hotel highly as long as it fits your requirements.

One last point about Viareggio restaurants. It really helps if you like seafood and pizza, otherwise you'll find the food very disappointing.
