The hotel itself is early 20th century well preserved, stylish building. The rooms are fine, service is great. Amenities are fine - a fridge and internet. Yes, the walls are a bit thin. But everything else, including the location is really amazing.

The front desk welcome (and departure) was extremely warm and friendly, a real asset to a lovely hotel, in fact, it was the best thing about it. We were made to feel very welcome. Location was good, right on the lake with restaurants within walking distance. The rooms were of average size by European standards but the walls were thin (we could hear our neighbours' kids very clearly) and I think the proximity to the road could make the rooms noisy at night. We styaed in January when the lake was deserted so it was reasonably quiet but I suspect this isn't the case in the peak season. We found the beds a bit hard and uncomfortable, as a result, we didn't have a good night's sleep.

In terms of value, I'm not sure this hotel is worth the premium charged in the peak season. We investigated staying during our next trip in April but found the rates considerably higher than other hotels which score better on Trip Advisor. As a result, we've booked our next stay at the Ancora (currently no. 2 on the list). I'll happily pay for the 'right' hotel and don't mind paying a premium but in my opinion, there are better value hotels out there & Pallanza was really just a standard, 3 star hotel.

Location
Right across from beautiful Lago Maggiore. One minute from ferry dock. Restaurants, and bars nearby.

Room
Large corner room #405 great views of lake. Room and bath very clean. Shower tiny but good water pressure.

Staff
A warm welcome from Sylvia at reception set the tone . She is a gem.She was very helpful making suggestions and info on ferries and sights.

Town
For us Pallanza was just right. Nice town for strolling, and has all the services you need.We ate at and recommend Angolo for dinner. Took the hop on hop off ferry to stresa ,isola bella and isola madre ,which has a beautiful garden. we enjoyed our stay in Lago Maggiore very much.

The Hotel Pallanza is excellent value, the staff are courteous and efficient and there are wonderful views of the lake, the mountains and the snow-covered Alps from most of the front rooms. On the downside, there is no restaurant, apart from the breakfast room, and the bar next door is a very eccentric place offering little in the way of mourishment for body or soul. Breakfast coffee in the hotel was also a trifle ersatz, but really none of these quibbles matter because the quality of the staff made our stay a real pleasure. They took great care of us and every request was dealt with quickly and efficiently.

We stayed in this hotel at the end of August as a friend was getting married in the town. We had originally booked into the San Gottardo but as the Pallanza is 4* as opposed to 3* we were "upgraded" for free. The hotel itself is quite old in style internally, and could do with a refurbishment as it looked quite dated. We had a lake view room, and the views are lovely, unfortunately the windows didn't close properly so you could hear the road, and the road sweeper who does his rounds every morning around 7am (sometimes doing 3 or 4 drive bys!!). I'm not saying the hotel is in a noisy place, but the lack of double glazing etc mean't no really preaceful nights sleep. The bed was incredibly hard, and did not make for a comfortable nights sleep, and even the spare pillow was very hard. I am a good sleeper, and was looking for a lovely relaxing holiday (we had left our children at home) and a few lie-ins, it just wasn't possible.
There was no tea or coffee making facilities in the room, a small thing, but it would have been welcome.
The staff at the hotel were really friendly and helpful, BUT, and this is a huge BUT, do not be tempted to drink in the attached bar, named the Simplon Bar. We spent about €200 having drinks the first night (there were 6 of us, we're not heavy drinkers), and it was very expensive, but worse than that, the owner or manager of the so called Pub was downright rude. We got lectured for trying to walk the shorter way to the toilet (round a couple of chairs, instead of going the long way round!). 2 of our friends arrived and were just about to book into the hotel, when he kicked them out of the bar for having suitcases with them. I wouldn't even consider spending another penny of my money with this rude man. He's so petty, we saw him walking out to abuse a driver who had parked his car on the opposite side of the road, and it wasn't to his liking.
All in all, the hotel is ok, but €105 per night is overpriced in my opinion. Beware if you book into San Gottardo you don't end up here, i have no idea how good that hotel is, but the reviews are lovely, and i'm rather disappointed by the one that got away!! : (
