“Great location and breakfast!”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

The location is perfect - just a short walk to the waterfront. We went to Jambalaya Cafe and it was a fun place to get drinks and food. We were the only people staying at the hostel on a Friday night, but we had a blast. There is Nintendo and game stations, a book trade, and an amazing breakfast in the morning that is included. There is not travel or information desk and they are not helpful, so we went to the tourist office right in town and got advice and maps. Great deal for the location and breakfast.

This was a sad experience. The location indeed is nice and the building impressive but that's about it. Very sad because the place could be nice. But obviously nobody cared at all for a long time. It is run down and things are old, wobbly and broken. We froze sleeping on old and cheap matrasses. We didn't dare to take a shower. We found only one working power socket. There was no internet for us whatsoever. If staff was nice or helpful then we wouldnt complain. But they were impolite and complicated. So we also noticed the "design" that someone must have chosen. It's not only the heating that is not working. We didn't feel welcome.

Stayed here for 2 days in May. The area of Verbania & around lake Maggiore is absolutely beautiful, and as you would expect prices are high so this was the cheapest option for Verbania at 50 Euro per night.
The location is ok. To get to the Lake you have to walk down a very steep cobbled walkway, which in wet conditions is a bit slippery and dangerous, especially if you have walking difficulties.
Check in took a long time as there is very few staff around, so had to wait 20 mins to check in because of queue.
Public area cleanliness is at a poor standard. The shared bathrooms were terrible. Not one of the showers had a working lock, this is bad when you could have any stranger walking in at any moment. So you had to hold the shower door closed as you shower. The toilets were always out of toilet paper too. And there was no soap to wash your hands. These are really basic hygiene requirements and this place failed miserably, to the point that my girlfriend became quite sick after eating breakfast here, so our stay was blighted badly because of it.
The rooms are also very noisy. It is a very big old building and sound travels from room to room, constant doors slamming and a few unruly young travellers running wild.

Everything here comes at an extra cost, even towels are extra at 3 Euro's per person.

I have nothing against classic 'hostel type' places, I have stayed in many of them. But when they fail to meet the absolute basics, it fails completely as an operation. Best avoided.

This hostel is located in a stunning villa in the upper class neighbourhood of Verbania: Castagnola. Don't go there without a proper map or satellite navigation or you'll get lost. Castagnola is a maze: narrow, winding streets. It is also recommended to explore the surroundings with a car. The two city centres of Verbania (Intra and Palanza) are a few kilometres apart. The hostel has a nice parking lot in the garden, right next to the building.

The staff was very nice and helpfull. However, it can happen that staff is not available at the reception during opening hours and you have to explore the building to see where the staff is. During our stay I believe that there was no staff in the evening and night. They'll lock the door and give you a numerical code to unlock it. Sometimes some of the guests can get quite loud in the evening and there is no staff to supervise.

The facilities are very basic and clean. The rooms are large, even the bath rooms are large like ball rooms. I did not like the shower because of the button you have to keep pushing and the irony smell and taste of the water. Furthermore I saw ants in pretty much every room of the building. You can tell some of the beds are pretty old, because they are hollow in the middle. You will automatically roll back to the middle of the bed!

The breakfast is great, with fresh pie and/or cake every day.

The hostel is in a beautiful old building, however it is very spacious inside. There is large common rooms, lots of balconies, an outdoor area, and free WiFi. Beds are comfortable, there is safe storage and the showers are good as well. The breakfasts were terrific, plentiful with a good range. There is so much to see in the area. The hostel is less than 10 minutes from the ferry terminal, and only about 20 minutes from the beach. This place is great!

The hostel is located just beautifully and we enjoyed our trip as a family very much. The sanitary rooms are clean, the staff is very friendly and helpful and the breakfast is much more than typically Italian. Go on and try to beat magic Pasquale in a table tennis match! Maybe you'll win a homemade Panna cotta... - all the best to you!!!
