Relais sul Lago
Ranked #19 of 23 Hotels in Varese
Reviewed May 24, 2014 via mobile

I was here for some days due to a business in Varese.
The hotel is very similar to an american motel with parking area just outside your room, and that's good if you want privacy or if it rains!
The reception is very nice and all the people working there and at the restaurant were very kind and helpfull.
Unfortunately the room was very old style with a terrible moquette even not to clean (as moquette always is!)
The bathroom was very small but however clean.
Breakfast is quite good.
In the end the hotel was surely very good but now needs to be a little bit refreshed.

Dear sir, thank you for your comment. The duty of new management will be refresh all 62 rooms of Relais , but at moment we offer, like you saw, a positive hotel solution in our classic and superior rooms. Guests that will take a check of snapshot on google images will have an idea like restaurant before all, and reception lobby and garden too, are absolutely good to be chosen!
My best regards, hoping see you again in next stay in Lakes of North Italy!

I would not recommend this hotel at all. Staff are dreadful. Had booked for 4 people but had to ask at reception four times to get enough towels in the room and then they gave us 6 hand towels instead of four bath towels. They couldn't even get it right the second day. Staff cannot speak English - they say they can but don't understand what you are saying. On check-in there is no explanation of anything - has a carpark but we were left to find it for ourselves. We booked this hotel because of the spa availablity but when we went to use it we were made to feel so uncomfortable by the staff that we didn't. Restaurant meal was very confusing as waiter did not speak English either and we had no idea what we were ordering or how much it would cost. We booked and paid in advance through Agoda but when we checked out they said they wouldn't accept the voucher and we had to pay for both accommodation and restaurant meal. Ended up having to call Agoda from my mobile at a cost to me for them to speak with the receptionist directly. Room was okay - sofa bed for two teenagers. No views of the lake at all. Very disappointing. Not an international hotel at all. Hotel photos are not representative of hotel. Main issue is the totally unfriendly staff who really cannot be bothered to help you at all.

Room Tip: Higher floors are better but don't expect any lake views

Dear Customer
I'm very sorry for your bad stay.
I understand that you do not need to create excuses. The rude staff can not be justified.
Could you please take note of improvements exposed
-new staff hired at the reception with another Setting the rules of courtesy
-management faster and clear of catering services
-sales systems for differentiated rates and services
-But the photos are real, then, at least on this thing, I must say that it has never been false statements in the photos shown.
Please send us a private email to my attention.
If you want to return, we will agree a discount sensitive and will have a new positive memory of the Relais.

I hope there are new opportunities to meet.

Having eaten in the restaurant Sergio 1950 with a Groupon coupon, I can only ask myself what these places hope to gain by offering such bad treatment. How can they possibly hope to get good publicity.
Ok, in ten people we paid about 22 euro per person and probably that was the value of what we ate, However, the coupon gave an estimate of 340 euros for 4 people, and indicated the restaurant as a 'Due Forchette' Michelin.
The menu was completely different from the coupon, the appetizer miserable, the starter quite good quality, very small portions for the main course and the dessert depending on the choice from very poor to good.
The service was very poor for a quality restaurant, in particular the wine which was supposed to accompany each course was served when we'd finished but the and when I asked the waiter I was told to wait because I still had some wine in my glass! The grand final was 'Dolce abbinato ad un calice di Moscato', served after the dessert in a shot glass from Ikea!! Such Class!

We booked this hotel for our last night in Italy after having visited several beautiful spots in central Italy. The photos of the hotel looked very attractive, but it is nothing like the actual rooms!

The rooms and the whole corridor on the first floor smelled terrible, almost like you're sleeping in a smudgy pack of cigarettes. Also, the rooms were very tiny, terribly poor-lit, very stuffy, old-fashioned and most things did not work properly (doors were hard to open and close, tv and airconditioning did not work, faucet made a loud noise, some lights were broken etc.).
We also found some trash of previous visitors in the drawers (list of groceries, train schedules, candy), so it felt kind of dirty..

The dinner at the hotel restaurant was also disappointing. Very pretentious, but lower quality and higher price than any surrounding restaurant. Lamb was ordered medium, entrecote steak well-done (repeated it clearly twice to make sure they got it right), but we got it the other way around, and the entrecote was not even medium, but just really bloody raw. Did not stay for dessert nor coffee, because it was just too noisy with screaming babies and a drunk company party.

Staff lacked hospitality, did not make the customer feel welcome, and forgot to mention all the usual hotel stuff (check out time, breakfast times and possibilities, wifi- and all other facilities), so we had to ask for everything ourselves. We would never go back to this hotel and strongly recommend others to NOT book this hotel, as there are plenty of other, and definitly better ones in the region!

Room Tip: Book another hotel in the area if you can!

Nice big rooms, there is a some stile in the hotel. But: the rooms are dark even if you use all lamps. Wifi doesn't work at the 2d floor, and there are a lot of small things oestrogen work or damaged. Could be much better!

Friendly English speaking female receptionist showed us several rooms (we had no reservation). As we told her we intended to stay three nights she offered a weekend special including a dinner for two in the hotel's restaurant. Not cheap but affordable. We took a room on the first floor where all rooms are suites according to the hotel (it's a two story building) The ground floor has standard rooms. We don't think the name 'suite' is in place here. The rooms the hotel calls suites are large and have a nice terrace, but they are not suites. Views over the Lake Varese and surrounding villages and woods. Large garden with big swimming pool and ample sunbathing area. Only negative point is the noisy and busy road next to the garden (noise of motor cycles and big trucks to be heard in the rooms as well).
Very pleasant is the spacious wellness centre.
Restaurant staff not overly friendly but correct.
Business hotel but in summer quite suitable for tourists. Located between the beautiful Como and Maggiore Lakes, each at an approximately 45 minutes drive from the hotel.

My mother and I stayed in this hotel recently. The hotel is very nice, it is not very flash but tastefully decorated and comfortable. There are lots of facilities onsite like and indoor and outdoor swimming pool, and a small spa and gym. We eat at the hotels restaurant a couple of times and the food is excellent.

The best feature of the hotel is the staff, they were excellent. Each member of staff I spoke to was very friendly and helpful. The reception staff were outstanding, booking taxis for us, helping us to organise day trips and activities and generally helping with anything we needed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which overlooks the swimming pool and lake.
