You go up this mountain and the view is so stunning! It's truly amazing. Though a little confusing, thanks to a local that was willing to help us out, we found our way to the top. We took a bus up to a tram and for 1 euro rode the tram up to the top. Then walked through an old Italian village still inhabited to find a wonderful view, good restaurants and some great sight-seeing. Don't be fooled -- walking down Sacro Monte is a trek. But breathtaking and beautiful and great exercise! We walked down the 2 kilometre hill, passing the old churches on the way. Caught the bus at the bottom back to the centre. It is a bit confusing, but once you do it once, it makes sense!

The best views over the town of Varese and the surrounding countryside can be seen from Sacra Monte on a summer's evening - drive half way, or catch the bus from town. Bribe the children with an ice cream while you have a prosecco from the many restaurant and café terraces.
