We stayed in this hotel as part of our Trafalgar tour. The hotel itself us grand and beautiful with a majestic carpeted staircase. The location was up on a hill and there is no way you could venture out on your own if you don't take a taxi. The hotel provides limited shuttle to the center area at flexible timing- you got to ask reception.

The breakfast was great- bread rolls were always warm and butter always cold. That's very good by Italian standards. there's no wifi in the rooms though. wouldn't stay here again because of location and no wifi. the water from the taps and shower was yellow and cloudy initially but we let it run for 5 minutes and then it was fine.

Good value. Basic hotel. Nice views. Small room. Limited menu in restaurant - same for lunch and dinner. Average breakfast but it was included in the rate. Small parking area. Building is in need of maintenance. Internet was very expensive at 17Eur and was intermittent.

Room Tip: Ask for a Room with a lakeview

I loved this hotel. From the moment I stepped out onto my balcony, I new it would be hard to leave. We were in room #407. From the fantastic views to the old world charm, I absolutely fell in love. Our bathroom was definitely remodeled, nice, clean and new. The room itself was a bit outdated, but I felt that was apart of the charm and experiencing Italy. Everything was clean and tidy.

The staff was great, we met some other wonderful hotel guests from Australia. The breakfast, which is free every morning from 7-10am, was great, and plenty enough for a breakfast meal. The staff were always friendly and helpful and could speak relatively good english, so we got on just fine.

The great views do come with a price: you are on top of a hill. To get to the hotel is a curvy, up hill road. They do a have a free shuttle that will drop you off in the centre of Varese and pick you up at a time you choose. Even though the hotel got quite busy by the end of the week, we never had a problem with the shuttle service, they were very accommodating.

We ate at the restaurant once and the food was good. On certain evenings they offer an all you can eat for 5 euros. There are three huts set up in the garden area and you can choose whatever you like from each, as much as you want. The food was good and the price was right, especially for Europe.

All in all, I felt like I experienced the old charm of Italy through this hotel. And I loved Varese, maybe that helped too :-)

Room Tip: Our room was a corner room, so we had two windows in our room and a balcony off of our bathroom. Wonderful! Higher floors have better views, we were facing the North.

It is really hard to reconcile this hotel's website - and most of the reviews - with the hotel we stayed in, as part of a large group. On arrival, the impression from the outside was quite good - a grand hotel from the turn of the 20th century. But once inside, it was like winding back time to some of the terrible hotels I once visited in Sovet Russia. Miserable staff, dilapidated interior and dreadful food.

It clearly once was a grand hotel but a total lack of investment and maintenance has left it a shadow of its former self.

Entering our room was like opening a time capsule. The decor, furniture and fittings were relics of the 1950s. The room smelt stale and dirty. The bathroom walls were cracked and the bathroom door had been glued back together. 'Grim' is the best word to describe the accommodation.

Dinner was no better - in fact worse. I have always said it is impossible to have a bad meal in Italy. Cooking is a matter of national pride. Not in this hotel. The tasteless slop - more akin to the worst pet food - was appalling. The service, by a silent, moronic waiter only added to the whole, strange experience.

Were we subject to some kind of practical joke?

Room Tip: Just avoid the hotel altogether.
