Palace Grand Hotel
Ranked #3 of 23 Hotels in Varese
Reviewed September 10, 2013

I stayed for 6 nights in the Palace Grand and highly recommend this hotel. The hotel is very stylish, with beautiful public areas and extensive grounds. It's a bit of a walk up the hill from the centre of Varese, but the advantage is that you get a quiet night's sleep compared to being in the centre of town. The hotel staff were extremely helpful and the room was large and clean. Some of the fittings are a tad worn, but I found that this added to the charm of the hotel. Breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice and a nice view overlooking Lake Varese.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a lake view, corner rooms have windows on two sides and are light and spacious.

Grandiose, I felt like Sophia Loren walking on all that marble and red carpet. The bathroom was spotless and entirely made of marble and golden finishings. Our bedroom was a little bit small but next time we will ask for one with a balcony. The views over the city and the lake are stunning. The staff is really pleasant and the breakfast is copious. Unfortunately we stayed only one night

On top of a hill overlooking the city of Varese, this hotel has all the relaxation elements that you would need for a short weekend break from hectic city life!

Breakfast is served from 7am to 10.30am but in order to get a decent choice of a cooked breakfast you need to get there EARLY! Otherwise, you can get a bike (from the main reception) and travel down to the city for a lovely breakfast in a piazza!

The swimming pool is great if there's not many ppl using it otherwise it can be crowded. Conditions were good, you don't need to take beach towels with you they are provided. There's a bar by the pool that also serves food otherwise you can ask the reception for the number of a pizzeria that delivers to the hotel should you get quite hungry! The pizza is lovely!

The hotel rooms are good, the bathrooms are marbled and everything is clean.

Only negative was that the TV in our room did not work properly but then again, we didn't spend much time in the room so it did not make any difference whatsoever.

The city of Varese is small but has great restaurants, La Perla and a Pizzeria in the Piazza Del Motta were our favourites. If you go to La Perla, get the mixed starter! Just delicious!

Overall it was a great escape!

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking Lake Varese

We booked a quadruple room via hotel's internet site with a discount, below 100 euros. The hotel had an elegant architecture and decorations and both room and restaurant had superb view over the green Varese city and the lake. We had a very large room and bathroom. The staff was very friendly. There was enough to eat at breakfast, plenty of choice with hot and cold meats and cheese and various pastries. As the hotel is situated on a high hill you need a car to get there and you can use the large hotel parking.

This is a very grand hotel with stunning architecture. The staff at reception and bar were also very friendly and professional, the best service out of all the 6 hotels we traveled to throughout north Italy. It was also great value for money.

I think most people who mentioned that this hotel needs "repair" or "renovation" did not understand the charm and old world elegance of it. This is not a modern or boutique or luxury hotel. It distinguishes itself exactly by what others lament about: its old fashioned qualities.

From the moment you set eyes on the building, it feels like you've been taken back into the past of old Italy. Rooms are furnished in country style, and there are numerous huge windows that let in a lot of natural light, with a pretty balcony. The bathroom is big and the floor is made of real marble. This hotel would have cost a lot of money in its prime.

Breakfast is more than adequate, free and of very good quality, as opposed to what others reviewers have said. Obviously it is an Italian breakfast, which means that there aren't that many savory stuff, but eggs and bacon are available, along with cheese and ham.

The apericena (aperitif with the 5 euro dinner buffet) in the summer garden was an affair in itself. The owner was very friendly and helpful, as were all the rest of the staff. There is even a campo da calcetto (mini football field) where we had a lot of fun in. Playing football in a field next to a lake is an extraordinary experience. There are also free bicycles for guests' use, which can be fun if you're fit enough for the hills.

This hotel offers very good value for money, so don't believe the negative things. If you love modern, hi tech boutique hotels in a bustling city then this is not for you. If you like something homey, old fashioned and simple, you could have found your place.

Hotel was very deasently priced; below average I think. Personnel was more than friendly and we felt warmly welcome from the first minute. Lobby bar deserves a special mention; surroundings and service could make you forget the modern times in a good way!

When booking the hotel, would recommend to think it as a kind of historical place. Taking that in to the consideration, it was a really good deal! Rooms have seen some time passing and the glorious days of the garden are in the past. Pool was described to be good in the travel book, but would rather just state that "there is a pool".. (Families with children seemed to be ok with it though!)

Room was generally clean, but we noticed some bug; not sure what it was, nothing that would bite you and not cockroach either. anyway; do not leave your luggage open in order not to collect any additional passengers to your own home!

Hotel seemed to be very popular with families having small children. No wonder; rooms and public spaces were large, location was peacefull and surrounded with a large forestry park. View to the lake is beautiful, hotel is on top of the hill and when opening the shades from the room; gorgeously overlooking the lake and town!!

Would recommend this hotel only if you are travelling with your own car. And if and when you have a car; there is plenty of free space to park it. Breakfast had very basic things, I don't think you should pay extra for it, but it is good that it's available. Dinner is also offered, lots of people seemed to enjoy it. Hotel is arranging some privat events too; while we were there, they had large cocktail party with some movie theme. So it is not as forgotton place as could imagine when first arriving to the hotel!
