“A superb Location, not yet on the "Tourist Map"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2007

When organising our last trip in late 2006, I scoured the internet for unusual places to stay, just putting things like villas or convents in the search bar. Our primary objective was to visit Tuscany and stay for a while, but I came across the most beautiful site of an apartment that used to house a convent (from 1689 till 1989) and my heart melted. I was then split between going way down south in Italy or going north to Tuscany. Unable to decide we did both, starting our trip in this most beautiful location, as yet unspoit by tourism, though I am guessing this is coming. The Apartments are Il Convento della Pieta, there are two Sole and Luna. We had Sole and it was perched 300 feet above the sea and what a superb view we had across the ocean - beautiful aqua blue seas, brillian sunsets, what more could you want. We were out of tourist season, so a lot of the little restaurants were either closed or only open for short periods, but this is what we like, the quiet and no fuss. The old town of Tropea is just beautiful. There is a lot of renovation going on, some buildings closed and roped off as they appear unsafe but developers (I am guessing) are gradually repairing them. Cobbled, very narrow streets that can only just accommodate a very small car, a conglomeration of roads cris crossing this beautiful little town await the intrepid traveller. How this place was built still amazes me. From books we bought we found it was built probably in the BC originally, but over the years has succumbed to many earthquakes, the inhabitants rebuilding with what was there, so there are a lot of very different building styles. The beautiful people of this old town still practice the siesta so everything closes at arount 12 and reopens at around 5 (or when they feel the desire) and shops stay open till 8 or 9 at night. It is the most fascinating place and I highly recommend a stay.....I am not sure what it would be like at the height of summer, I am guessing it would get quite hot and if you stay in the old town on top of the cliff it is a long walk to the beach. I think many of the hotels do have swimming pools, however this is a place you would go to to enjoy the ocean - crystal clear waters. Here's the link to the apartment and some information on this lovely town [---]
