“Terrific hospitality, great location.”
Reviewed July 9, 2014

B&B Portercole was the third stop on our Honeymoon in southern Italy. The location is brilliant, right in the heart of the old town. You step out of the door and you are just a two minute walk from steps down to the main beach. Behind you is the buzzing nightlife area, a Piazza fringed by bars. Ahead of you lies the Main Street and numerous little lanes that lead to intriguing shops and delicious restaurants. As a side note, we loved Tropea and all it had to offer!

After a fairly long day of travel we were greeted by gorgeous Sharon, who runs Portercole with partner Biagio. The very old, traditional style building had been renovated about 3 years ago. The couple worked in a local hotel together before opening the B&B and have done a great job on the fit out. The B&B and our room, were very well designed with all the mod-cons. It was spotless but still retained a huge amount of character (great marble bathroom). Our room had a window that looked out on to the bustling street below which gave us some entertaining viewing during our stay.

The breakfast Buffett is continental style but is full of variety - pastries, tarts and cake baked freshly by Biagio's mum, cold meats made by the family and cheese, fresh fruit, yogurt etc.

But what really made this place unforgettable was the fantastic service and hospitality of Sharon and Biagio.
Nothing was too much trouble... As soon as we asked about a restaurant recommendation, laundry, a day trip or how we could get to our next destination, either Biagio or Sharon were straight on the phone and had organised a few options for us within minutes.
At times we may have been a little annoying (but were never made to feel this way), especially when trying to work out how we were going to get to Positano. Sharon and Biagio investigated every option possible for us which would have taken them some time. In the end Sharon even walked down to the local ticket vendor with us to ensure we got the right train tickets (as the vendor did not speak English). Lastly, we asked them to organise us a taxi to the station (which is not far, but too far to walk with luggage)... when we went to meet the taxi, Biagio was actually driving us free of charge!

In summary, fantastic location, great value and truly lovely people, who are the heart and soul of this great accommodation.

Room Tip: Our room was on the second floor facing the street. The block out blinds ensured there was no noise...

The family (2 adults and two children) stayed at Portercole in June 2014 for two nights, staying in the Ulysses and Sirens rooms on the first floor (stairs only). These are the two double rooms with views of the town; parents in one room and kids in the room directly across. Both had large bathrooms, were very clean, comfortable, cool, and quiet. The walk from the station was quite easy - we travel very lightly where luggage is concerned, but the seven year old walked the ~15 minute trip without complaint. The inclusion of beach towels and flip-flops were useful as we took the chance for a swim and snorkel around the rocky outcrop at the beach (10 minute walk away). Breakfast selection was good and the service was lovely. Extremely good value stay in a lovely beach-side town. Would definitely go back and recommend!

Room Tip: The double rooms with views and small balcony are on the first floor. Then there are two more rooms...

OK, maybe not so perfect in that we had to stop at the flower shop to find out where it was located (GPS next trip), after that, perfect. Biagio and Sharon made a hands-on study of the high-end hotel business and then set to work to replicate it with four rooms. You can walk anywhere you might want to go in the charming seaside town of Tropea. The breakfast is abundant and accommodating. The room even has a clothesline and clothespins should you want to refresh your favorite garment. I was thrilled to have my nightshirt smelling like sunshine. English is spoken quite well by both hosts, but Sharon understands so well you can chat the morning away. We would happily make this B&B a destination, then explore places like Stromboli from there.

Room Tip: Stick to a lower floor, if your luggage is hard to manage. No elevator and the little stairs to the...

This is a very comfortable B+B in the centre of Tropea. The hosts are very accommodating and everything is very luxurious, in particular the bathroom. They also put the heating on when we were there in March, as it was quite chilly. Excellent breakfast too.
The only thing is the bed room art; I am sorry it is appauling. Hence only 4 instead of 5 stars.

Me and my mother stayed at the portercole for 1 week.
As we showed up on easter sunday evening, the owner first helped us finding a parking place in getting in the car and driving with us. So the first impression was extraordinary positive and we kept this the whole
week. The owner are very friendly and supportive.
The rooms are really pretty and the bathrooms are a dream. The B&B lies in the
old centre of tropea. So you can get to a lot of restaurants, shops and "gelaterias" in a second.
The wonderful beach can be reached over some steps. A very beautyful, clean beach.Alltogehter we can advise this place to a 100%!

Great B&B. Well designed, equipped and clean. The breakfast was good, had a variety of food choices and the staff was very helpful and kind. The B&B is located in a great spot in Tropea.
Parking in the area could be hard in the main season, but we are sure that the staff can help find a suitable space.
Be aware that Tropea in April is not in it's main season, so it can be hard to find attractions - for example, the cruises to the islands starts only at May.

We have just had a great stay at this B&B. Sharon & Biagio, despite being relatively new to the business, are hosts who can't do enough for you and are always willing to help. The room was very clean and had a generously sized bathroom. The bedroom was easily dark enough to prevent you from being woken early by the sunlight. The location was excellent, central to most amenities and the beach. The provision of beach towels and flip flops is a nice touch. No noise was experienced although we did stay out of season.

The breakfast was excellent. We really enjoyed the scrambled eggs and cappuccinos. There is also a good range of pastries, fruits and yogurts. The custard croissants were especially enjoyed!

The B&B has been decorated sensitively, with exposed walls in places giving a hint to it's age. However, this also means that the steps can be steep and are quite narrow.

We would definitely recommend this B&B.
