“Antiquity meets the modern world”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2013

Calabria has many surprises but Tropea is one of the most enjoyable I have found thus far. The well preserved town stands high on a cliff above a beautiful sandy beach and marina which I did not visit but I spent a happy afternoon admiring the piazzas and pallazzos of this charming place. I visited in early september when it was relatively quiet and the restaurants in the old centre of town were struggling to fill their tables but the place is well set up for tourists and I would guess that at the height of the season you will struggle to find a table. The narrow streets and bars are laid out in a typically haphazard way which makes exploring all the more fun as you turn each corner to be presnted with the prettiest of town squares and ancient churches spanning many centuries of antiquity. I will return for a longer stay in the future.

“It's a beautiful old town delightfully situated over the Tyrrhenian Se”

Great and inexpensive restaurants. Atmospheric old town in beautiful situation. An Italian holiday resort with very little in the way of "international" influences.

“It was just ok”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

Tropea is a seaside town located on the stretch of Tyrrhenian sea ,called Cost of the Gods. Beautiful old town, but need the restoration. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes, but only few high quality shops,so shopping possibilities are poor. To walk from town centre to the sea involves descending flights of steps. I would not recommend it to older adults or families with small children.

“Learning italian while having a vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2013

My sister and I were spending 2 weeks in the area of Capo Vaticano and Tropea with family. We were in Tropea and ate at Quei Bravi Ragazzi. near the resaurant was an Italian school. We ate there a number of times, we decided that while we were there we would try to improve our Italian language skills. We had a minimum basic knowledge but not enough to have a conversation of any substance. We enrolled in the Studio Italiano Tropea. the Director, Nicola, was very helpful in designing our course studies. He also assisted in arranging a lovely penthouse apartment overlooking the Historical Square of Tropea. Our teacher, Antonella, was outstanding. She had an excellent grasp of English which was important for her to teach us Italian. She was patient and organized, ad easy going and we worked hard for 4 hours each day! (normally a 2 hour class). We are amazed at how we improved in only one week. Nicola also arranged for a cooking class/dinner with other students at a mountain top cabin above Tropea. What a fun night of cooking, drinking and eaating. After 2 weeks we left and started out to adventure to other parts of Italy. Tropea is a quaint, bustling town. with interesting shops, plenty of outdoor cafes and restaurants and wonderful beaches.
