“Delightful hotel and location!”
Reviewed October 9, 2012 via mobile

We just spent two wonderful days in Tropea at the Hotel Rocca Della Sena. Louise greeted us warmly after a long drive to Tropea. Our room was clean and had everything we needed for a pleasant stay...even beach towels are provided. The beach is a trek down many steps, but good exercise! The views from the terrace of the hotel are absolutely stunning, and provided a beautiful spot to have a drink and relax for several hours. We enjoyed our short walk into the old town, and particularly liked our dinner at Al Pinturicchio, which Loiuse had recommended to us. We would definitely say that Tropea is a delightful location on the Calabrian coast, and the Hotel Rocca Della Sena is the place to stay!

I cannot express how thrilled we were when planning our trip to Tropea that our choice was to stay at this family owned hotel. My husband and I felt that it was perfect in every way. The location was spectacular with the sound and clear view of the sea below us. The very clean rooms were nicely furnished and very ergonomic in the layout and storage. The breakfast were delicious (especially the yogurt and the homemade nduja) with the fun and lively service of Simone. Louise at the front desk was a Godsend for her English speaking and knowledge of the area. Her recommendations were spot on as to what to see and where to eat. The young owners wer so kind and hospitable giving us a true Calabrian experience and making us feel at home in their lovely place. The guests were international coming from England, Norway, Germany, and the US. Never hestiate to stay at this small wonderful authentic hotel with an excellent staff, beautiful surrounds, and perfect location to explore this faded yet timeless, beautiful seaside village of Tropea.

Room Tip: They sometimes serve dinner ther at night and it is really really good and the service is wonderful...

We loved everything about this small, boutique hotel. Cool, quirky decor, spectacular views & sunsets, plentiful breakfast with lots of choice (including eggs), & the delicious yoghurt a previous reviewer mentioned. The front of house staff, Louise & Patrizia went out of their way to help us from enquiry to departure. Simona who serves breakfast is delightful, chatty, smiley & fun and Danilo mixes a great G&T & recommended some lovely Calabrian wines. The housekeepers kept our room immaculate & we must mention the chef, who we didn't meet but who cooked wonderful evening meals using fresh, local ingredients. The room had window shutters so was very dark &quiet at night and we slept incredibly well. Yes, there are steep steps to & from the beach but we regarded these as our exercise for the day, & at the top we were rewarded with drinks & fruit or appetisers served to us in the jacuzzi in a beautiful garden with a stunning view - in our opinion hard to beat.

This hotel will not disappoint. We had a beautiful room 190 steps above the Mediterranean Sea.
Our hosts were charming and our receptionist Louise helped me from the day I inquired to the day we left.
Breakfast was included and was excellent. I highly recommend this jewel!

I am so surprised by the most recent review only as we have just returned from 11 nights stay at this hotel and we found it to be wonderful. The cleanliness, location, views, friendliness and choice at breakfast were second to none. Lots of little personal touches and lovely staff. We ate there on our first night and as it was our honeymoon they arrive out with a delicious cake with sparklers that lit up the whole restaurant! The beach is busy as we had expected as it is high season but it didnt bother us at all and hardly surprising. Water wonderful to swim or kayak in. The location is fantastic and a short pleasant stroll to the old town. I would have no hesitation in recommding this hotel to any type of traveller. Just to be aware that there are many steep steps to the beach which we found a fun challenge every day but no harm in mentioning. We even got a token gift upon departure too. I must mention again the breakfast choice was outstanding!. Many thanks guys. Keith and Lily x

We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights in July in a panoramic seaview room. The view is lovely from these rooms and we had a spacious balcony with a jacuzzi bath (which was very small, only enough room for one). The room was nice, spacious and clean and had a nice bathroom and shower. We did find a few ants in our room on check in; we mentioned this to reception and they put down product. We did not find any after this. We found it unusual that instead of the customary welcome information about the hotel and surrounding area there is instead a contract which states the hotels responsibilities and expected conduct from guests. This stipulates that only food and drink from minibar/hotel must be kept in room and that anything found will be removed and brought to hotel's managing director. A bit over the top! But typical of how we found this hotel to be lacking in warmth. The receptionists were friendly unless you dared to bother them with a problem. They definitely do not subscribe to the view that the customer is always right!! The hotel is very quiet which is great for a peaceful night sleep but it really did lack any atmosphere. The bar and restaurant were always empty whilst we were there. We did not eat dinner as there was only one choice each day which never appealed to us and it was much cheaper to eat in restaurants in the old town. Breakfast choice was just okay, a lot of pastries and sweet things. Simona was very friendly. The hotel is lacking in a swimming pool which means having to trek down the a lot of steps to the beach if you want to sun bathe. The hotel falsely advertises they have access to a private beach. They told us the beach was separate and you choose your own lido. 10 euro a day for an umbrella and sun loungers. Beaches are very cramped with sun loungers on top of each other. Location is fine, a short walk to the Old Town. The hotel has very small premises and it is very cramped, there isn't really anywhere to sit around hotel. Would not stay here again, was not good value for money. Very expensive for the little facilities that are provided.

Room Tip: Try to choose a seaview on a higher floor.

Dear guest,
Thankyou for your review and for choosing our Hotel for your stay in our enchanting town , Tropea. We feel it is helpful to receive positive and negative comments about our Hotel as it helps us to improve our work and the facilities.
We are sorry that your stay in our Hotel was not up to your expectations as we put in a lot of effort and commitment to make our guests' stay pleasant and relaxing. We think that whoever chooses our Hotel is aware that they are not booking a 'grand Hotel' with large spaces and lots of rooms but, as can be seen in the photos and the descriptions given on our website and other portals, our guests choose a small family-run Hotel which was created through the restructuring of a villa overlooking the sea. The hotel is made up of small, welcoming spaces in which you can experience a sense of warmth and familiarity where our guests can relax enjoying the breathtaking views. Obviously even our small hotel has rules and regulations (as in all the hotels in Italy and the rest of the world) and it is correct to have them visible on our website and in the rooms so that our guests are aware of them and avoid any misunderstandings. In these rules there is indicated that food cannot be eaten in the room: this rule, that is valid for all Italian hotels (except residences) , is imposed by the Italian hygiene rules and if it is respected you can avoid finding 'unwanted guests' (like ants or other insects that are attracted to the smell of food). However our Hotel, apart from offering bed and breakfast, offers our guests who do not want to venture into the crowded, busy streets of the historical centre, the possibility of having dinner by candlelight in our lovely garden overlooking the sea. The menu is different every day and usually based on freshly caught fish and to guarantee a good quality service we only accept bookings for dinner for a maximum of 5 couples for the evening.
We would like to make clear that on our website and other portals we say that there is a private stairway to get to the beach; we have never written that we have a private beach or that we offer beach service for which we are sorry to point out that maybe you got confused with some other hotel.
We are also sorry to find out that our staff at the reception, which have always been praised for their courtesy and attention in solving problems, only with you were not so attentive or considerate. If so we are sorry for any inconvenience which was made during your stay.....we know that the customer is always right...... we hope however that your clarification is not a delicate way of justifying a lack of courtesy or respect for the work that the staff at the reception do every day with dedication.
...however other guests that stayed here at the same time you did and wrote reviews have continued making things clear about our Hotel, the staff and the surroundings.
We thank you again for your advice and dedicating a bit of your time for our Hotel and we hope to have you again as our guest sometime in the future.

Kind Regards,
The Management of the Hotel Rocca Della Sena.

In a quarter of a century of visiting Italy, this was one the very best places we've ever stayed in.

Bedroom was quiet and had plenty of individuality, lots of splashes of colour - no grey minimalism here. Big balcony, wonderful sea views (and the contents of the mini-bar were very cheap for a hotel of this quality!). Lots of nice little touches, like bringing a gratis plate of fruit to your room every early evening.

Breakfast very good indeed, a very wide choice of good quality food – including a clever gadget which pipes what tastes like a delicious mixture of natural yoghourt and ice cream into your bowl (though please switch off the radio; loud music at breakfast doesn't really fit the rest of the hotel's ambience).

We only ate in one night, but the food is good quality and worth the reasonable cost (and they came round offering everyone a second helping of the main course - not something you're offered every day). Their wine list is long, interesting, with plenty of bottles from Italy's lesser known regions, and the mark ups are reasonable and not at all greedy - worth coming to the hotel for this alone.

Staff all very friendly and helpful - especially Louise at Reception.

All in all, a wonderful place. And an easy walk into the centro storico of Tropea, which has plenty of decent places to eat (see separate reviews).
