We have been almost all over Italy over the last 5 or 6 years as we have completely fallen in love with the country and its people. Earlier this month we decided to explore a quieter area of Perugia which is still only a couple of hours from Rome and we found Hotel Bramante on the internet after quite a lot of searching around - we are glad that we did.
The hotel is absolutely beautiful and it has its own website which gives a very accurate description of the hotel. It is in a beautiful old building which has been sympathetically converted into a beautiful, quiet and relaxing environment. The rooms were spotlessly clean with excellent bathrooms and comfortable beds. Whilst the rooms were not overly large they were certainly of a comfortable size. We paid a little extra to have a room with a balcony overlooking the spectacular valley behind the hotel and I would recommend this - although I am sure the other rooms are fine as there is no traffic noise to the front of the hotel either.
The hotel has the most beautiful swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers and a small bar to provide light refreshments. At lunch time the hotel staff take your orders for lunch (if you wish) and on the day that we ate there at lunch it was absolutely delicious. We chose not to eat there in the evenings as we like to explore different places but other guests commented how good the food was. I understand that on some nights there are beautiful barbeques by the pool.
The hotel also has a tennis court and hammocks stretched in the shade below mature trees.
The hotel is just outside the town of Todi which is historical and has some good restaurants which the owners of the Hotel Bramante will recommend. You either face a 20 minute walk up to Todi which can be a little tedious on a very hot day or you can take a gentle, level stroll to the funicular just 5 minutes from the hotel which takes you free of charge right up into the centre of Todi - there are never queues. In Todi you are well away from the more popular tourist destinations and will see plenty of the real Italy.
We found the hotel staff to be very friendly, professional and helpful - I believe the hotel is still family owned and it shows in the excellent service they provide.
The area is quiet and you will either want complete peace in the hotel supplemented by Todi itself or you would need a hire car.
We stayed there just this month but are already planning to return in just a few weeks which is perhaps the best recommendation we can give.
Are there any downsides? Well the only downside I can think of is that we found the breakfast to be disappointing. Taken on the fabulous veranda, the setting was truly memorable but to be honest we found the breakfast did not meet the standards of the rest of the hotel. There were croissants but there was only a small selection of rolls (and those that were there were of the sweet roll variety) and the coffee was generally only warm and there was no fruit of any sort. But I stress this was hardly a complaint and it was the only thing that we did not think was absolutely perfect - I feel sure that had we said anything to the hotel staff then this would have immediately been resolved - it just did not seem a big problem to us, so we enjoyed the view!
If you are going to Perugia you really should go to Hotel Bramante.
