After a very positive experience at the Stella 2 years ago, we made Sulmona and the Stella our destination on a recent trip to Italy. We were there in September of 2011 and went back this September for another 5 night stay at the Stella. Never disappointed! Roberto and Giuseppe are doing a wonderful job at making the Stella a most comfortable, enjoyable place. We will go back there again and again and....

As I mentioned in one of my previous reviews about hotels in Italy and will probably continue to do so in all my reviews, cars and parking in Italian towns is no trifling matter. Stella is probably one of my best examples. After leaving our rental car on the bridge (still waiting to see if that turns out to be an offense) we walked to the very center of Sulmona's historic center where the hotel is wonderfully located. The very nice man at the desk tried to explain something in very nasal fast Italian about parking, which neither my fiancé who speaks some Italian nor I, who thinks I understands, could figure out. He proceeded to mark points and lines on the town map, indicating something to do with hours. After a long saga which included driving into the historical center in what turned out to be the forbidden entry hours, getting lost and driving around the town and its not so immediate vicinity for a very long hour on my own, completely clueless, and finally parking in the town's municipal covered parking ten minutes' walk away, we settled into a nice room and enjoyed the evening stroll around the confetti lined center of Sulmona with all the locals.
After a good breakfast and excellent coffee, the nice man at the desk proceeded to lead us to the Police station two houses down in order to make sure we received no ticket for driving in the center at the wrong time and noting for the records that we had stayed with them should any issues arise latter.
So you need to note that many towns in Italy have off limit areas in their centers. There is apparently no consistency as to when or why, each place is different.

Stayed here recently. It rings true to the tagline "hospitality in the historic centre of Sulmona" - the brothers Roberto and Giuseppe were very hospitable (not to mention their coffee was great!) and the location is fantastic. Just a short walk around to Piazza XX Settembre and Piazza Garibaldi. It did get a bit noisy towards the latter part of the week with people hitting the town late at night but that comes with the territory. The room was clean and then bed was comfortable. Enjoyed the stay and will stay here again in the future.

We arrived in Sulmona by train from Rome. What a beautiful way to enter Sulmona. We arrived at the hotel when all the restaurants were closed for the afternoon. Roberto was so kind to make us lunch. It was great! Then Roberto made reservations for dinner. The hotel was clean and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast wasn't included in our stay, but we ate there and it was very nice. I liked the fact you could walk from one end to the other of the old town. Close proximity to confetti stores, restaurants and gelato, no need for a car. If we return to Sulmona we would stay here again.

We were only passing through Sulmona for one night on our way from Puglia to Rome and are very glad we found this hotel. It's clean, quiet, and the rooms are decorated in a pleasant, more modern way than many Italian hotels. The bed was excellent. There is no lift, but we were allowed to leave our large suitcases downstairs and bring up the few overnight things we needed. If we'd stayed longer, the lack of a lift would have been a negative point. The owner was very responsive and helpful in all ways -- from recommending a lovely restaurant to suggesting a running route for our son.

Room Tip: If you have large suitcases, request a 1st floor room.

My husband and I, along with my parents stayed at the Albergo Stella hotel on recommendation from a cousin living in Sulmona. We found the hotel very comfortable, clean and service was absolutely fantastic. Umberto and his brother couldn't do enough to help us and provide great advice and information (in Engish too). The hotel is great value and very central to everything. We would fully recommend this hotel to anyone that is travelling in the region and looking for a comfortable very clean hotel with a great atmosphere the moment you walk in!
