“A real gem!”
Reviewed May 11, 2014 for a stay in May 2014

What a wonderfully secluded and peaceful place to stay! The accommodation is very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The kitchen and bathroom are well equipped with everyday materials. The apartment faces almost due south and the french doors from the kitchen and one of the bedrooms open on to the terrace which is bordered by a garden area and some trees (which in the hotter months provide some welcome shade). Beyond this there is simply farmland and countryside. You really can't feel much closer to nature than this and still enjoy the comforts of your own home! When we were there some long-eared owls had nested in one of the trees and for a couple of days we watched them learning to fly.
Hilary and Stuart are such a hospitable and knowledgeable couple. They are a mine of information about the area and are helpful in every way possible. Stuart booked us a restaurant one evening and they gave us lots of ideas of places to visit, although we spent most days using Stuart's book of walks and local maps. We had discovered the day before we arrived that we had long lost relatives in the area and Hilary went to great lengths researching the family name and possible locations where they lived.
This place is for people who love the countryside and the great outdoors. Don't go there if you want nightlife or to be lazing by the pool all day. The spectacular countryside of Abruzzo is jaw-dropping. When we were there we walked across hillsides carpeted in wild flowers with snow capped mountains hanging on the horizon. There are still bears and wolves in the area, though these are rarely seen. On the days we walked we rarely saw more than a couple of other people, and even the villages clinging to the cliff faces seemed deserted. There are few tourists here, and those we saw were Italian. Not much English is spoken, so take a phrase book. We also took our Sat Nav (GPS) with us. This was useful every day, and proved invaluable when we missed the exit to the airport from the motorway on the way home and found ourselves driving through the centre of Rome!
We will be back.

“Fantastic!”
Reviewed November 20, 2013 for a stay in October 2013

i cannot recommend highly enough Casa la Roca. The apartment is very clean and private with everything one would need. The hospitality shown by Hilary and Stuart was beyond compare. This was our seventh vacation in Italy, always staying in villas/apartments and by far the best. Abruzzo is affordable and beautiful! We hope to return to Casa la Roca again next year.

“We wish we had booked for a longer visit!”
Reviewed October 24, 2013 for a stay in October 2013

Our only complaint about Casa la Rocca is that we did not stay long enough. We enjoyed 4 nights in this very comfortable and beautiful location. The apartment was the most comfortable place of our 6 week trip - well stocked and very clean and cozy. We enjoyed a balance of exploring and just relaxing at home while there. Hilary and Stu could not have been more welcoming - from the moment we arrived we felt as if we had been friends for years. They are very kind and helpful and such interesting people. The area around Sulmona is some of the most beautiful country in Italy. We enjoyed hiking and also visiting small villages, as well as an afternoon in Sulmona. There is so much more to see and we will definitely return for a longer stay at Casa la Rocca.

“Off the Beaten Track”
Reviewed June 24, 2013 for a stay in May 2013

We stayed two weeks in May at Casa La Rocca. Superb day walks and amazing wild flower meadows. The accommodation was very comfortable, quiet and well equipped with wonderful all round views, yet convenient for food shopping. Stuart and Hilary were amongst the most helpful and thoughtful hosts that we have stayed with. Walking with Stuart enabled us to tackle new walks in different areas. His local knowledge was a great asset. We plan to return.

“Excellent accommodation in an beautiful region”
Reviewed September 30, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

We were keen to explore parts of Abruzzo on foot. Cicerone has recently published a walking book of the region, so what could be better than staying at the villa owned by the author of the book? We enjoyed several day walks that were described in the book. Most started a within a few miles of Casa la Rocca, the exception being a great day out on an excursion to Gran Sasso national park to climb Corno Grande, nearly 3000m high and home to a (small) glacier.
The villa is about 5 minutes drive from a Conad supermarket in the town of Sulmona. The sugared almond factory there was surprisingly interesting!
The villa was very well appointed, with all cooking utensils. Wireless internet and digital TV was available. We were able to borrow walking maps from Stuart.
In all a great place for a holiday, at a very reasonable price.

“We loved our time at LaRocca.”
Reviewed September 24, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

The Abruzzo, with its whole series of mountain ranges and its numerous picturesque hill villages, is (for the English, not the Romans) a bit out of the way but that's just the way we like it. We went for the walking (which we could not do full justice to in the event because of a leg injury) and a special attraction for us was that the English owner, (having written a Cicerone walking guide), an expert with all the maps/alll sorts of local knowledge, is happy to help on the subject - as well as being very personable and hospitable. Personal circumstances dictated - unusually - that neither he nor his wife could be in Italy when we were there, but his stand-in impersonated very successfully the warmth of the welcome.which included a bottle of Montepulciano house wine (made from the small vineyard in the grounds) and a basket of fruit. Stuart did not let his absence prevent him from fulfilling his role as host, conducting an email dialogue to help us plan our walks before and during our stay.
We loved our time at LaRocca. We especially liked the large, private, shaded terrace (plus back garden) where we went for a deliciously peaceful mug of tea in the morning sun/fresh air - where we tended to eat all our meals in fact!
All the rooms are fresh and colourful in the modern way, comfortable and attractively furnished. The bathroom (Italian plumbing at its best) and kitchen were doubleplusgood; everything worked as it should (not something you can say about that many rental properties) - shower, fabulous! - and a kitchen not just equipped (as often) in a token way with a few odds and ends but organised by someone with the patience to set up a working kitchen - you can probably tell we like our food, and like to cook.
Small suggestion - more precise verbal directions from the main road to LaRocca would help the visitor arriving by car for the first time.
We intend to go back and do the walking properly. But our disappointment was muted because we got to see a bear - yes, a wild bear and bearcub - on one of Stuart's small walks. That has got to make LaRocca pretty special!
