Hotel Villaggio Stromboli

This hotel is absolutely breathtaking. If you are planning to visit Stromboli, I highly recommend this hotel. The driver met us promptly at the port when our ferry arrived at 5:40 in the morning and showed us the sitting room where we could be comfortable before the office staff arrived at 8/9 am.

The hotel overlooks the water and is very romantic.

Francesca spoke English and was very helpful with directions and making our stay very pleasant. The rest of the staff was great too!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room. You won't be disappointed.

We have stayed at this hotel two times during our 4 visits to Stromboli. The hotel has a wonderful location looking out towards Strombolicchio. Unfortunately most of the other features don't match up. The restaurant, although not owned by the hotel, is well below average and even if you do decide to eat there you can't charge back to your hotel room. Overall, the owners are friendly enough without going out of their way to provide the service you would expect for the price. Perhaps the most important piece of advice if you do decide to stat at the Hotel Stromboli is to try to get one of the double rooms with an sea view - preferably one of the three rooms on the upper level.

Room Tip: Double room with sea view - one of three on upper level.

We booked a room with sea view and we were not disappointed: Stunning view of the blue blue sea, from a lovely balcony in the shade. The whole hotel is a beautiful arrangement of small terraces interconnected with stairs and decorated with flowers, picturesque to the extreme but not tacky!

The room was small, but impeccable - no trouble with the shower as someone else has written. Breakfast was not a buffet to gorge yourself, but absolutely sufficient to start the day - including a real latte macchiato that anyone willing to speak 2 words of Italian could order from the friendly staff! The location on the fringe of town was good because it allowed to get away from the still considerable masses. If needed, 15 minutes of leisurely strolling, or a short, slightly exciting taxi-ride, would bring you back to the town centre. The taxi costs a small amount, I don't remember how much, though, we only used it to get to the port with our luggage.

Room Tip: Unless you hate the sea, ask for a room with sea view.

Four of us (3 adults and 1 teenager) stayed at this hotel at the beginning of August 2012, as part of a family holiday expedition to climb Stromboli and see the volcanic crater. The hotel was pre-booked as part of a two day tour of Stromboli by the excellent CST Tropea travel agency. We booked the room/apartment at the height of the Italian tourist season, so the price was approx 70 euros per person, including transfers and breakfast.

As part of the booking, the hotel had sent a transfer vehicle to pick us up from the port; the transfer vehicle was three wheeled moto scooter, just big enough for us and the driver, with no seatbelts or safety straps - an ideal way of getting up and down the tiny alleyways! Our driver absolutely belted along in it; it provided a breathtaking whistle-stop tour of the town in the 10 minutes it took to get to the hotel. One of the best 6 euros we have ever spent!

The hotel frontage is lovely – a tiled walkway with seating areas under a trellis festooned with gorgeous smelling flowers – and lovely views of the sea. Check in was fast and relatively efficient – all of the staff speak some English (the younger ones especially so) – and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. We had to hand over our passports to the check in staff for the duration of the stay, so be aware of this!

The hotel itself comprises of several buildings in the same road, and our room/apartment was a separate building about 30 metres up the sane road as the hotel. It had its own small tiled courtyard, more gorgeous smelling flowers, and a table and chairs to sit outside and relax on! We had a fantastic view of the volcano as well!

The room/apartment consisted of the main bedroom and a connected large bathroom. The bedroom had a double and two single iron framed beds – all clean and comfortable – and various bits of slightly worn furniture, which just added to the rustic charm. There was no air conditioning (!) - just a large ceiling fan, and several windows with fine mesh at them to deter insects – and originally I thought we would be far too hot to sleep. However, due to the position of the room/apartment and the fan, we all had a good nights sleep, even at the beginning of August! The standard of the room was probably the same as a decent quality 2 star English hotel, but in mitigation the surroundings and location were definitely worth another star ;)

The bathroom was tiled, clean, and contained enough towels for everyone! HOWEVER... the shower drained VERY slowly, which caused the excess to spill over and flood the floor :( My daughter emerged from a 10 minutes shower to find the entire bathroom under half an inch of water... NOT GOOD. We reported this to the hotel reception, who promised to fix it, but they didn't look into it for the one night we stayed :(

Breakfast was included in the price, and was served between 07:30 and 10:00 in a breakfast area overlooking the sea, back at the main hotel. There was a decent range of continental breakfast items – cereals, fruit, croissants, coffee etc – quite enough to set us up for the day.

The hotel and its separate rooms/apartments are set in narrow little lanes, giving you a real feel for everyday life in Stromboli. The hotel offered us a transfer back to the port via the same manic moto scooter for 6 euros, but we chose to walk back – it is a 5 minute walk from the hotel to the sea front, and then another 15 minute stroll to the port itself.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel – the location and staff were wonderful – although the standard of the room wasn't the greatest, and perhaps the price was a little high. However, we were staying at peak times.

We can recommend this hotel, but suggest that you visit outside of the peak Italian tourist season, and also check the shower drains properly!

PROS
Lovely gardens and views of sea and Stromboli
Friendly and helpful staff
Clean
Decent breakfast

CONS
Shower did not drain and flooded bathroom
Two star facilities at three star prices

I really enjoyed staying at the Hotel Villagio primarily because of the location of my room. My room faced out onto the expanse of ocean, looking down from my balcony I could see the translucent water crashing against block volcanic rocks. I loved the sound of the ocean that would lull me off to sleep at night, this was often intercepted by the thunder of the erupting volcano. The rooms were very basic, but as I didnt spend any time in the room it didn't impact my trip at all. The room was very clean and cleaned daily. Outside the room are tables and chairs and a washing line. I actually really liked the holiday home feel to it with everyones towels and bathing suits drying in the afternoon. The only draw back to the rooms are noise, take earplugs if you don't want to hear other people. This worked for me. The room fridge was not working, get this checked out early as I discovered it should have been functional and this would have been handy.
Food wise there is a separate restaurant with-in the hotel but not part of the hotel. The staff are fantastic and the food is good. They will whip you up a morning omelette on request or whatever you desire. The hotel restaurant I would give miss, the food is ok but I felt by eating here I was missing all the great food to be had in the village. The continental breakfast was average, the coffee was not great. For lunch there is a fantastic wine bar just near the hotel called Pardes, they have a limited local produce menu, the salads and fresh juices were fantastic!
For internet the Wifi in the hotel is chargeable and only available in reception. Pardes do Wifi for free.
The hotel has it's own private beach with a great resource for hiring umbrellas, kayaks, chairs you name it. There are lots of rocky nooks and crannies to relax if you want to explore and get away from the crowds on the sandy beach. Take Snorkeling equipment with you and waterproof shoes designed to protect feed from rocks. I just tried to imagine it was reflexology every time I ouch, ouch ouched into the water.
The roof terrace is a lovely area particularly as the sun is setting, take a moment to sit up there and take in the golden light of the setting sun. Or in the evening it is great to sit up there and marvel at the amount of stars you can see in the sky at night.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Villagio and would return, its a great set up which enhances your Strombolli experience.
Remember to book the hotel pick up service from the Ferry, it's too far to drag bags.

Room Tip: Have a room overlooking the ocean.

With its position right on the basalt cliff top overlooking its own black sand beach, the hotel could not be better located for a sunny morning breakfast on the terrace. The simply furnished, but perfectly adequate rooms straddle the typically narrow alley way on which the hotel is located, around 15 minutes walk from both the port and the village centre. The hotel was used as a base for the crew of the Rossellini film "Stromboli" and photos adorn the walls. It caters equally well for couples, families and groups wishing to use it as a base for venturing to the volcanic viewpoints around one hour's walk along the coast, or to taking a guided tour to the summit. The family owners provide a cheerful welcome and a relaxed style of service. Having now brought student groups to the island for ten years, following an intial holiday, I would recommend the hotel as ideal for coping with, and tolerating, their needs and requirements.

We went to Stromboli to see the volcano and enjoy the black sand beaches. This small hotel's terraced rooms are seafront with lovely shaded balconies where you can relax. The rooms were clean and adequate. They have a lovely morning continental breakfast - you can even bring your breakfast back to your room/terrace to eat in privacy if you wish. The walk to "town" is easy although be warned that there is not alot to do there.

The "beach" in front of the hotel is rocky - rounded lava rocks. There is a black sandy beach just down the road. The water - warm and crystal clear.

Wish I was still there.

Room Tip: Bring your flashlight. There is limited lighting on this isolated island.
