“True Italian Family Restaurant...A Gem in Spoleto”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

This is a truly wonderful restaurant in Spoleto. As others have said, don't be put off by the exterior. The interior is wonderfully decorated with posters of the Spoleto festival and artwork by numerous regional painters. It is a warm welcoming atmosphere. We have been here several times and have never been disappointed.

You will likely be greeted by the owner, Giancarlo who will come to your table to give you the menu. Well, there is no menu per se. He will tell you what is being served orally. It changes everyday, basically, its whatever the family is cooking is what you will be eating. Usually, 2-3 choices of pasta for the primi. Last time there was Strangozzi (an Umbrian classic try this, its amazing!), Gnocchi and Penne. Then there are a selection of meat dishes, again usually 3-4 choices veal, sausage, chicken, pork, lamb, fish, the possibilities are endless. His English is ok, but it helps if someone at the table speaks Italian and can translate.

Service here is fantastic. It is all being taken care of by the family. Dishes are brought out of the kitchen and then served tableside onto your plate. My favorite part of this restaurant is that everything is included in the meal. For around 20€ a person, the pasta, main entree, vegetable, salad and desert are served including wine, and bottled water. No 5€ charges for each bottle of water and as an American I love drinking water. There are several different "all-inclusive" options if say you don't want dessert or if you want to add cocktails or cordials to the meal and accordingly the per person price shifts.

If your travels take you to Spoleto, do try Dei Pini, remember to make reservations for the weekends and keep in mind that dinner is only served for a few hours, so don't miss your window or chance to enjoy this fantastic treat! Buon appetito!

This is a fantastic restaurant and we really wish we had discovered it much earlier in our stay in Spoleto. First of all the location of the restaurant is just outside of the old town in a more modern residential area. Don't be put off by the exterior as a real treat awaits those who visit. We were welcomed to our table by a man who seemed gruff in the beginning but was utterly charming. He told us what was on offer that night, dishes that evening included intestine done in a sauce, he grinned slightly when he told us that - it was a popular choice amongst the other customers that night who all seemed to be Italian. We opted for gnocchi and pasta with a wild boar ragu for our primi. We were presented with delicious bread, sparkling mineral water and wine while we waited for our food to arrive. When it arrived it was served off big platters onto our plates. Wow when we tasted the food we were amazed, it was just fabulous. Such simple food but food that was obviously prepared with the best ingredients and a real talent in the kitchen. We then had our mains - pork steaks, lamb and lovely vegetables. Because the food all night had been wonderful I really felt that we just had to try desert - again it was a simple pannacotta but it was delicious. Service throughout the meal was efficient - there is a lovely relaxed atmosphere in the restaurant and all around us people were savouring their meals. This is a fabulous authentic Umbrian restaurant - go and try it you won't be sorry!
