Having read the many reviews on Trip Advisor, we went expecting something quite different. And different it is! The restaurant is tiny and filled with an eclectic mix of parafinalia, but seemingly dominated by many manifestations of Pinnochio??? Fortunately we had taken the precaution of booking advance (I had thought this would have been unnecessary, it being a Monday at lunch time) - and just as well we had as the restaurant quickly filled to capacity!
Within a couple of minutes water and wine were on the table - and that's the only decision you will have to make - red or white wine/still or frizzante acqua!
Then the food begins in a procession of small (but very adequate) plates - and it is very, very good. The entire proceedings are orchestrated by Filippo the owner, part maitre de, part ringmaster - but we found it entertaining and in way intrusive - we can only commend the service.
However, if it's a quiet romantic candlelight dinner for two you are after, you might want to look elsewhere!
We had a really good lunch, the house wine would not have been my choice, but very drinkable nonetheless, and the bill at the end almost embarrassingly small. The final delightful touch - Chef "Mama" came out of the kitchen to take a well-deserved bow and to make sure all her customers had eaten well!
Would definitely return and heartily recommend!

We read about it in a travel guide and gave it a try. Many tourists would turn back and look elsewhere when they would see the small entrance in the dark narrow street. There is only one table outside and the menu, well, you just have to wait what's gonna come. The owner is a showman who doesn't stop talking. But the food is made by his 72 years old mamma. It doesn't come more traditional or genuine than this.. Delicious and absolutely cheap. It is touching that such a place still exists and we wish Filippo and his family all the best.

After six visits, Osteria del Matto is still our favourite restaurant in Spoleto. Possibly in Umbria. Maybe even in Italy. It's not to everyone's taste: Filippo, the owner, is a character. Sometimes his humour is at his own expense, sometimes at yours. It's a joke; go elsewhere if it's not your bag.

You are not required to do anything as base as ordering food: it just arrives and it is outstanding. Filippo's charming mama and equally charming sister prepare food that is recognisably Umbrian - you'll see farro, stringozzi alla Spoletino etc - but with a much broader range of influences, from whatever is fresh in the market or looking handsome on the butcher's slab to a dash of soy in the farro salad: the delicate influence of Filippo's time in Thailand and his lovely wife.

We have never felt anything other than extraordinarily welcome. Our small children have played with the owners' and have been treated as respected guests in their own right - mama prepared them their own swiftly-despatched gnocchi and Filippo teased them just like the rest of us.

I slightly miss having a bottle of wine land on our table as happened the first couple of times we went there; they seem to deal mostly in the mezzo these days. But it slips down very easily nonetheless. I also wonder if some of the more phallic Pinocchios have been removed or am I just immune now.

On the last night of our last trip to Spoleto Filippo drove past in his wedding-cake van, stopped outside the cafe where we were having a last aperitif and took my partner and son for a spin round the town. How many restaurants give you that?

Just go.

We visited at beginning of our stay and were delighted with food and service by young waiter and decided to return for our final evening. however, our evening was ruined by the leaden humour and obnoxious behaviour of the owner who, when he discovered that we were from Glasgow, decided to make jokes with the rest of the Italian diners at our expense. We know enough
of his background to know of his stay in Scotland and where his impersonations were amusing to begin with his attempt at making fun of his diners was not appreciated. When the restaurant was in charge of his young assistant it was a charming experience as was his mother greeting guests. We can only hope that this was an off night or he may offend more diners than he attracts.

Set aside a number of hours; open your mind to a numberless series of (small sized) courses, lie back end enjoy the best of local cookery. Filippo worked for Menotti (founder of the local festival) and now has his mum cooking for him at this colourful restaurant. When we were there, it was sweltering hot, and mum had to be dragged from the kitchen to dring a litre of water outside! But she returned to finish the lunch menu. It was all absolutely excellent, and the bill was tiny. A great experience.
