La Torretta is located on a quiet square about halfway up the hill in Spoleto, There is a nice sidewalk seating area which makes dinner a pleasant experience. Food is good without being outstanding and the prices are not the cheapest in Spoleto but overall it's well worth a visit

Excellent food and service. Delicious pasta first courses - strangozzi alla spoletina and ravioli; and chicken and steak main courses also excellent. Meringue dessert was a dream.

We first discovered this lovely Trattoria in 2001, evocatively called "The Tower", or La Torretta. It's run by two charming and immaculately dressed gents, Elio and Stefano Salvucci. I'm guessing they are father and son.

You have to try the main dish "Lo sformatino di riso tartufato" (arboreo rice cooked in a broth, with butter, onion, truffle and mushrooms sauce, baked in a form and covered in a truffle sauce). This dish stayed in my memory, it was so rich and delicious, that it inspired us to go back to Spoleto 9 years later.

The restaurant is very close to the

Trattoria la Torretta was another treat in our search for dishes typical of Umbria and Spoleto.

I had one typical Spoleto dish - Strangozzi alla Spoletina - fresh strangozzi pasta prepared Spoleto style.

My wife and I both had the Umbrian dessert - crescionda - prepared Spoleto style.

Our antipasto - gli Assagini della Casa (The Tastes of the House) - was a delightful assortment of wonderful tastes.

Our host and server, Signor Stefano Salvucci was terrific.

For a detailed description of this dinner, see my blog post at: http://viaggiviniecucine.blogspot.com/2010/11/trattoria-la-torretta-another-spoleto.html

La Torretta is the fourth nearest restaurant to our holiday home in Spoleto. We go at least once a week when we are here. If my husband had his way we would go for ‘our tea’ every night. This is a legendary place. Our personal name is ‘Two Jumpers and a Suit’. If you go at a busy time you will have no problem understanding this.

The restaurant itself is unassuming and in winter you could easily walk past and perhaps miss it because it isn’t the prettiest. It is improved in summer by some tables outside. The charming Maitre D speaks a little English and the menu is translated so no issues there. The food is just delightful. Honestly would like to recommend some things but would end up just writing down the whole menu! Should mention that this menu is a lovely change from the standard Osteria type so several different things to eat. Also the specials can be legendary. Last meal we had was pappardelle with wild boar meat for starter, beef with radicchio and balsamic reduction (him) and beef with truffle sauce (me) with rosemary roast potatoes for main with flaky pastry with creamy confectioner’s custard and berries to finish. I’m slavering just thinking about it. Guess where I’m having dinner tonight?
