Borgo della Marmotta

Borgo is a farm resort which rises out of its rather drab environs as an oasis of quality and calm. It is very difficult to find the entrance but once you do you will be greeted by beautifully kept lawns and flower beds and a prettily restored cluster of rooms based around a central communal area. Fabio is very welcoming and helpful and his English is perfect. There is not much to see or do in the immediate vicinity but most guests are happy to stay by the beautifully landscaped pool and lawns. The rooms are small and dark, a welcome break from the sun. There are shaded areas outside if you want to take your meals al fresco but the cooking facilities are quite small. Breakfast is served as an extra in a nice outside room but the quality is poor, which for a "farm resort" was
disappointing. Instead of fresh local produce we were given supermarket pats of butter, dry bread and stake cake, tired fruit and jugs of weak coffee - given the cost of the rooms this was very poor value and needs to be improved. There is nothing for children to do - table tennis for instance could be provided. A lot of money has obviously been spent on renovating these beautiful old buildings so it is a shame if the quality of the architecture is not matched by the quality of the food and overall experience - you expect more for these prices.

Room Tip: It is difficult to see the rooms on the website ours was rather dark

This place seems to appeal to newly weds in their early 30s, but I am afraid the charms appreciated by many totally passed us by. Our hearts sank as we drove up to this undistinguished village, and the project did not quite hold the smart rustic/eco chic promise suggested by the website. The grounds are well tended but the pool seemed small compared to the number of guests. The breakfast was a particular disappointment - tired fruit bowl, stale cake and weak coffee. In the high season food ran out without being replenished. Asking for fresh milk or a decent cup of coffee seemed too much trouble for the surly manager. One word of advice - before you go read the "average" and "poor" reviews written by Italian guests on this site -they know a sub standard hotel when they see it. On the plus side, Spoleto is a lovely town. we enjoyed the Duomo and the charming Tric Trac cafe nearby.

We have just returned home after our fourth stay at the Borgo. We absolutely love staying here as everything is perfect; the service is outstanding, Filippo and the team are generous with their hospitality and ensure that you are looked after. The hotel itself has been beautifully restored, the grounds are exceptional and the pool is, well, paradise. We love a 'typical' day at the Borgo; sleep in since the area is so peaceful, go for a long walk in the hills of Umbria, have a lazy breakfast of delicious local produce and freshly baked treats from the kitchen, spend the rest of the morning and early afternoon laying by the pool. And then spend the afternoon exploring the area, checking out Spoleto and the surrounding towns. The evening starts with prosecco on the terrace at the Borgo and then the only hard decision you have to make: where to eat! Bravo to everyone at the Borgo.

It's so rare that you arrive at a place that is better than you hoped. Absolutely beautiful setting and such a sensitive conversion. The lounge and honesty bar contributed to the lovely laid back feel and the staff were very obliging. The grounds are gorgeous and there's a lovely pool. A truly amazing place to visit.

Borgo della Marmotta is a slice of simple, unfussy Italian perfection. The rooms are beautiful, all soft hues and tasteful furniture, the gardens are wonderful and tranquil. Breakfast is simple but excellent and the light lunches delicious - at three courses for Euro - I personally think it is good value. The owners and the staff were delightful. The yoga instructor was very personable and very good with two beginners. We loved our holiday and are looking for a reason to return.

Room Tip: The apartment Noce is really lovely.

To call this a farm holiday is misleading as the property is not what an American would consider a farm. Indeed it is a working olive producing farm but the hotel facilities are al 5 star, the people who work there are absoltely first class and very helpful. The atmosphere is casual elegance with a secluded locatiion close to Spoleto and all the other great attractions in Umbria. If you enjoy getting off the beaten track and into the real Umbrian scene then go no further. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: We had a standard room which had a great bath shower Can't recall the room #. All are very quiet...

We stayed at Borgo based on trip advisor rating and were not disappointed. It is in a great location for restaurants, visiting interesting towns and also some great hiking and biking. We like Umbria for the lower traffic than Tuscany. Borgo is quiet, has a great breakfast, staff very knowledgable, beautiful grounds, and maybe because of trip advisor reviews gets other interesting travelers to converse with.
