When we arrived in Florence, Graziella was very gracious and offered to pick us up at a bus stop in the middle of the city. We agreed and she arrived very promptly and drove us to her house.
Upon arrival, she showed us the apartment and even offered some wine and bread which we again agreed to. We found her very kind and agreeable for offering these things to us.

Later, she again, offered for her son to drive us into the city to which we again agreed. Upon returning to the B&B we took the bus (didn't want her to be bothered by us) and had to walk a few miles back to her house. (There is a bus stop that comes nearly to the end of her driveway but the bus for this line is sporadic and we missed it.) This was no problem for us and we enjoyed the scenic walk through the Italian country side.

Upon arriving back at the B&B we were scolded by Graziella for not calling her to pick us up. We were not sure what to think at this point and then she asked us to dinner. We had already eaten and thus turned down her offer.

The next morning, her breakfast was delicious and much more diverse than many we experienced in B&Bs throughout Italy. When we asked about dinner that evening, she informed us that she was much too busy to make dinner that evening and instead drove us to a nearby restaurant. The restaurant was clearly local and we enjoyed it and enjoyed the view of Florence that it offered.

Throughout our stay at IL Poggiolo, we often noticed evidence that Graziella had entered our room while we were gone. In many B&Bs the owners do this to clean the rooms, etc... but our experiences were that the room was no cleaner than we left. On the contrary, we felt like she was snooping.

Graziella has owned her farm for 20 years. She has a beautiful location with several acres of olive trees, horses, and beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside. She presses her own organic olive oil each year and her apartment is much larger than others we experienced. She also made reservations for us at the Uffizi and Accademia museums.

However, the comments she made, the fact that she entered our room repeatedly and her odd personality made us feel on edge during our stay. We are not sensitive people but we are not sure the hospitality industry is for Graziella. (Before we left she commented that during the Summer, there are many tourists in Florence and "It is terrible!" We agreed that Florence is very busy. She then looked at us and said "It is terrible for me too!" ) We feel that her place is beautiful and is a great bargain but we don't know if we'd stay there again.

Stayed: May 2006

We had an unforgettable Italian agriturismo experience at B&B Il Poggiolo, just outside of Florence. We spent the last part of our honeymoon there in early October and we couldn't have loved it more. Il Poggiolo provides great location and atmosphere and Graziella is an amazing host!

Il Poggiolo is located about about 3 miles from the heart of Florence, the main airport and Autostrada A1. This location is a great base of operations to see Florence and the Tuscan countryside. It is the perfect refuge each night from the wonderful insanity of Florence. Il Poggiolo is a working farm and olive plantation situated on a little hill (hence the name) on the side of a valley that is home to many other olive plantations. You can see Florence itself from the property, and the view looking across the little valley to the other olive groves is absolutely beautiful. There are two apartments for rent: one attached and one separate from the main house. We stayed in the separate apartment, which has a little kitchen, nice bathroom with shower and large bedroom/living room with a double bed. It was very private (perfect for a honeymoon couple!) yet just across the courtyard from the main house where the host, Graziella, serves a terrific breakfast each morning. The apartment is comfortable and rustic, yet the bathroom and other amenities are very new. It felt like a home away from home.

The location, setting and comfort of Il Poggiolo are reason enough to plan a stay there, but what really makes Il Poggiolo unforgettable is its host and proprietor, Graziella. With the help of her son and daughter (both in their 20s) she runs both the farm and the B&B.

Graziella serves as host and concierge to Florence and Tuscany. During our stay, she made reservations for us at the Uffizi and the Academia, as well as local restaurants. She also provides valuable insights as to places to see and how to get around town, which helped us to save time and see much more than we would have otherwise. Also, be sure to treat yourself to dinner at Il Poggiolo one night during your stay. Graziella plans the dinner according to your schedule and provides a multi-course meal that is extraordinary! Graziella makes you feel so at home and goes out of her way to make your stay in Florence a memorable one. At the same time, our independence was never constrained. Graziella gracefully manages her duties to her farm and family as well as all the needs of her guests. Case in point: There was a group of four intrepid Canadians staying in the other apartment at Il Poggiolo while we were there. They needed to leave at 4am on their last morning at Il Poggiolo in order to catch the train to Ancona to take the once daily ferry to Croatia (really, they were truly intrepid!) Graziella arranged for her son, Neri, to drive them to the train at 3:30 in the morning. No kidding! She even did some laundry for us while we were there!

There is a bus stop at the foot of Il Poggiolo's driveway, where you catch the small shuttle bus runs regularly to the piazza about 1 mile away. From there you can catch the city bus that runs directly to the heart of Florence. The timing of the shuttle bus serving Il Poggiolo was somewhat sporadic. Although having a auto is by no means required if staying at Il Poggiolo, we booked a car in advance of our trip. (Park is free at Il Poggiolo. Renting a car was affordable, saved us time getting into town and gave us the freedom to explore the Tuscan countryside. If renting a car, book it prior to your trip: we witnessed several people turned away at the AutoEurope office.) We found that driving a mile and parking near the main bus line was the best was the best transportation solution. Total travel time from Il Poggiolo to downtown Florence was about 25 minutes using this method (assuming that there wasn't bus strike!)

Although we were advised by many not brave Florence by car (it's not as bad as reputed to be - Boston is much worse!) we were glad we did - it enabled us to make easy daytrips to the Tuscan countryside. Our best daytrip was to the hill town of San Gimignano, about 45 minutes away. With the car, we were able to stay late into the evening and experience San Gimignano nearly tourist-free. A highly recommended day trip!

We can't say enough about Graziella. She's more than just a good host: she is a truly good person with a wonderful heart. We were treated as family during our stay. Please, if staying at Il Poggiolo be respectful of the fact that Graziella is a host and concierge but not a maid and waiter (although she does in effect serve these roles at times.) In other words, please respect that she is a very hard working woman who also must attend to the needs of her farm and family. Remember that you are being treated as a member of the family and being welcomed into her family's home. The reward for this respect will be the best travel experience you can imagine, a feeling that you have been embraced by another culture - and another family - as one of their own. If you are looking for this type of experience, Il Poggiolo and Graziella's hospitality will be a perfect fit for you.

Also, don't forget to take a few bottles of home made organic olive oil home from Il Poggiolo. Graziella wrapped three bottles for our flight home and we've been enjoying (sparingly, to make it last!) ever since!
