A 4 hour drive from Quebec City but very scenic. We debated on whether to go because of the distance but were glad that we did. We had one of the best days on this trip and were rewarded with a walk thru beautiful gardens. Along the way to the gardens are some unique towns and churches. All in all, definitely worth it .

Even if you are not into flowers by name, these gardens are truly beautiful, especially when you imagine that this was the home and property of one keen lady. The gardens change a lot depending on when you time your visit. Everything depends on the weather and time of summer. I have been a few different times, in different summers (always in July), and have never been disappointed. Make sure to see the house (inside), the shops, and the joining 'festival' show of landscape 'art'. In total, it is a good outing worth the visit (count on a minimum of 1, up to 2 hours).- Bathrooms are top-notch. And lots of parking. Nice cafe at the main Reford house (back on left side). I believe they also have good Sunday brunches in the main dining room (?)

"An oasis of beauty in a remarkable setting, these gardens are on one of the wonders of Quebec." So says the publicity and absolutely true! I guided a charter bus tour to this little bit of heaven on July 16, 2012. There are wonderful garden features at every bend on the path, meticulously maintained by exceptional gardeners on site. This was my fourth visit to the site and not my last. Well worth the drive!

The weather was perfect and a relief after the heat wave we had been having. The weather at Reford is a little cooler than in Ottawa generally. We saw the rare blue poppies but they were past their best. They are native to the Himilayas and so very difficult to grow in our climate. The gardens are largely through lovely forest trails and around every corner there is another surprise. This is the fiftieth anniversary of the gardens and they are now owned by a non profit group that still has members of the Reford family. Even though our visit was the middle of July there were still some peonies in bloom. There were wonderful old walnut trees and roses galore of every type and color. There are lovely places to eat, the walking is easy and a wonderful place to spend a day. It feeds the soul. About four hours is probably enough. All plants have Latin names and the names that they are commonly known by.

As a landscape designer and an frequent visitor of botanical gardens I was thrilled to tour this wonderful garden in Grand-Metis. Beautifully designed pathways wander through acres of gardens affording the visitor an opportunity to get lost in its loveliness. The carefully planned combinations of color and texture makes you feel like you are walking in a Matisse painting. Every attention is paid to detail and the entire property is impeccably groomed. This will be added to my short list of favorite gardens around the world.
