“Great hotel, fantastic spa”
Reviewed July 28, 2012

Our second visit was as good as our first. The rooms are nice, clean and spacious. A bit warm at night. Food was great. But the spa is nothing short of amazing! Don't miss the salt pool and grotto.
We will back again.

It always starts with the staff doesn't it ?
From the off - when a waiter showed us how to navigate the six course evening meal - it just got better. The wine waiter knew his stuff, the bar man had our aperitifs nailed by the second night and the receptionists took us on a couple of personal walking tours to check out the amazing facilities.
I am a bit of a Dolomite nut - so the Gran Baita had a head start in my book. But the hotel simply enhanced the whole dolomitic wonderland for me. A six day bus/lift pass bought at the hotel saved our legs for the really steep bits and allowed us to visit the nearby towns. But to be honest it's the fantastic soaring peaks, the meadows and the lovely rifugios which are the main attractions.
Tired legs and sun bashed faces need a shower, a rest and top quality food and drink. That's what the Gran Baita is for - and it does the job superbly.

Room Tip: 'junior' suites are rooms with a bit more room and a sofa. Worth the extra. If you want to g...

We have visited this hotel 6 times over the past 10 years, always in June, and it keeps getting better as they add new/upgrade facilities, e.g. dining room, indoor-outdoor swimming pool, spa.
We have tried different hotels in different parts of the Dolomites, but have always come back to the Gran Baita: we liked the walking in some other valleys but nothing matches up to the Gran Baita. The breakfast buffet has all you could want, and more, but our favourite is the antipasti spread in the evening. It's different every night and you have to restrain yourself or you wouldn't be able to eat any of the other 4 courses. There is a set menu each evening, but you can have anything you want from the a la carte selection (at no extra cost).
As with many hotels in the Dolomites, it is a family owned and run hotel, and it shows: they care about what you think. Another good sign is that the same staff are there each year (as are many of the visitors). It's not a cheap hotel, but it is worth the money.
This year we're going on 21 July as we're going with my sister (a teacher) and husband, so have to wait for the school holidays. On occasion, we have gone independently, and hired a car. We did this last year, but the car sat outside the hotel for the whole week. We didn't need to use it as the bus and lift network are excellent. So this year we're back to a package. Hope Selva's not too busy and the alpine flowers are are as good as in June.

Having written a glowing review (5*) a couple of years ago, I thought an update would be appropriate after our third stay. Nearly all my comments stand but perhaps a heads up about a few things would be helpful to people.

The first two stays were over New Year. New Year's Eve dinner - absolutely dire each time. A set menu (so none of the usual fab choice) served over HOURS. The main course usually arrives about midnight about 4 hours after the first starter. Boring boring boring - I can't express how ghastly it is to be sitting there for so long. Also, each time we checked out we had a slight row over being charged extra for this very expensive dinner which was in fact included in the price we had already paid (sorted out each time, but a pain).

This year we went during the last week of March. I hadn't appreciated how much the vast choice of food made this such a great hotel. Well you don't get it in March (unsure when they stop). Yes, there is still a buffet but it is about a third of the size of what we had been used to and it made a big difference to how we viewed our stay.

Also, because of the lack of snow, we couldn't catch the "glass bridge" lift back at the end of the day to ski down to the hotel and so the lack of a pick-up service (which all the other hotels seemed to provide) wasn't much appreciated. Another reviewer has said they will not take you to the Dantercepies lift but that has not been our experience.

One other thing, on our second visit some rather nasty synthetic (but fitted, which is presumably why they bought them) sheets were put on our bed. I soon had those changed! Didn't have them this time but just thought I would mention it in case people think they don't have a choice.

So... all in all still a good hotel and we will definitely be going back but may pick our dates with more care.

Our first visit to this hotel and Selva and we werent disappointed!! The rooms were very well appointed spacious with loads of storage..( I would like tea/coffee facility in room.) beautifully cleaned every day, loads of hot water after a long days skiing.Beds really snuggly The food was fantastic to rival any top restaurant ...so much you really could miss lunch! The wellness area was fantastic had 2 treatments in the spa!! Brill...I really cant fault it except it quite pricey but it is Selva!!! And well worth it!! The skiing is excellent with endless runs practically empty except on the home runs! so many we need to go again..had perfect skiing conditions with well groomed slopes..
