I have never written a hotel review here before but I promised myself while at this hotel that I would -- so others would know what they were getting if booking at the Wolkenstein.
It's not all bad, but there are some things you need to know before coming here. I'll get back to the inability to sleep later, but here are the facts:
First - It's not actually in the village of Wolkenstein/Selva, though technically it's within the village boundary. It's actually on the edge of St. Christina, the next town. Not necessarily bad, but important to know if you really planned to be in Wolkenstein.
Second - It's not actually close to the ski lifts, as advertised. We had to make a short walk downhill to the bus stop, then take a short bus trip to the nearest lift (and the reverse coming back). Not a huge deal either but not fun if you expected proximity to the lift.
OK, here's the worst. The hotel advertises a nice disco attached to it. Seemed like a plus when we booked, but this is no ordinary disco and it is not only attached to the hotel, it's on the ground floor -- and very, very loud. This is a hard core, techno, rave, headbanger disco that shakes every floor of the hotel until 1:30 or 2 in the morning, seven days a week. We were on the third floor with earplugs and still heard/felt the music and the shouts of the DJ. This is OK if you're 18 and will be in the club until then, but NOT FUN if you want to sleep so you are awake to ski the next day.
There's some good here though. The food was very good and the staff was pleasant and helpful. It's almost as if they are trying to make up for the noise. The rooms are OK, but vary widely in terms of what has been renovated. Our party had three rooms, and only one had a renovated bathroom. The other two had 70's era tiles, peeling linoleum floors, and rusty bathtubs. The furniture was a bit newer but already a bit tired. The beds were comfortable and I suspect if there was no music shaking them, you'd sleep quite well in them.
As for the area, nothing beats Dolomiti! Go there for sure, but probably avoid the Wolkenstein unless you like to party every night until the cows come home.
