Just come back from a 5 night stay at La Pergola with my parents and partner and frankly it completely ruined our whole stay in Sorrento. The hotel was well below par and not what we expected at all considering the hefty price tag paid. The rooms were very basic, no double beds, just twins pushed together. No bedside table for my partner, he had to use a chair. We were given towels with holes in which looked like something my cat had had a go at. There were TV's in the room which you couldn't watch because there was no decent reception. Yes there was a pool... just dirty and full of leaves! The outside bar didn't open once the whole time we were there either. Breakfast was limited and mostly inedible. The 'hot' scrambled eggs were stone cold and we saw flies sitting on the slices of ham and cheese, so after the first morning we never went back down for it.

Worst of all though, was the constant noise at all hours of the day and night inside the hotel, meaning we were left extremely sleep deprived. Upon complaining to the manager (who couldn't care less) the response was that we could move upstairs at a cost of 80 euros per night, per person. Just an absolute insult.

The cleaners start at about 6am in the morning, so if you weren't up at the crack of dawn then your room didn't get cleaned. Me and my partner actually wanted a lie in with the price being that we didn't get our room cleaned for 2 days. The hotel is a 20-25 minute walk from the main square and shopping area so expect to walk as well.

Worst hotel all 4 of us have ever stayed at. So incredibly disappointed.

We stayed at the Hotel La Pergola from 19th Sept to 24th and we had no problems at all while we were there. We did a lot of sightseeing while we were there and the staff at the hotel were more than happy to help us work out the public transport. All staff were friendly no matter what time of day it was (we had some very early starts!).
We were half board and didn't expect much but our evening meals were fantastic! A 3 or 4 course meal every night, would go back based on this!
The rooms were very basic but we didn't need anything more than a place to sleep and change as we were there for the sights.
It was closer to Sorrento than we thought it would be, a 20 to 30 minute walk and despite there being a lack of proper footpaths it was an easy walk. It was a short walk to the Circumvesuviana which was very easy to navigate.
I would definitely go back to this Hotel purely based on the friendly staff and the great food!

We visited this hotel from 17th to 24th Sept 2013, the hotel is clean, staff who go out of there way to make your stay enjoyable are great epecially Raffael, Daniella ( who is always smiling) and Alleshia, it has a stunning view from roof , where there a plenty of sun loungers and tables and a gazeboo if you want to keep out of the sun , it also a lovely garden with tables. Breakfast is Ok , but the evening meals were first class with 3 choices of starter and main meals and a choice of deserts. The main meals were very good and some nights outstanding. For money this is a great hotel...

Room Tip: Ask for the ones with largest balconys

We reserved a room here sight unseen based on reviews we found here on TripAdvisor, and were very happy with our stay. We arrived in a rental car and were there for 3 nights while visiting relatives near Naples and being tourists in the area. It's close enough to Sorrento that you can easily walk or take the bus to get to the train station and tourist areas, but no so close that it's crowded with every tourist who goes to Sorrento. The Marinella overlook is close by, and the view from there is more spectacular than from Sorrento itself.

The room was clean, and while not big by American standards, was not tiny, and was very comfortable. Open a window, and you have lemon trees within reach. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the breakfasts were decent. The pool was small but refreshing at the end of a hot day. Beautiful patio near the pool where you can get a drink in the evening and relax in the shade.

Parking was convenient - not on site, but in a gated lot about 50 meters away. Nice to be able to leave the car there for our whole stay and get around on foot and by train and bus instead.

Only complaint was that one of the 3 nights we were there, there was a party with loud music at the hotel next door, and the music lasted until about 11pm. Not something La Pergola could control, but because there are other buildings adjacent to this you might get some unwanted noise.

Overall, highly recommended.

Yet again we had a lovely 2 weeks at La Pergola. This is a lovely hotel, all the staff are friendly, including the cleaning ladies who don't speak English. Raffael the head waiter is excellent as always, he really goes out of his way to make sure we have everything we need. For example, at breakfast he makes sure nothing runs out. One night my husband was too ill to go down to dinner and so he offered to have some food sent up to him which was very thoughtful. We enjoyed the option to dine at Cafe Latino, which is the hotel's restaurant in the centre of Sorrento. As others have said, the food is basic but it is a 3* hotel. We like the house white wine, it's around €12 a bottle which I think is reasonable for a hotel and it was €3 for a large bottle of mineral water. I don't think you would find it any cheaper in a restaurant. We paid €80 for 2 weeks' air conditioning but this was our choice, you really need it in August. Although it's a longish walk into Sorrento (about 15-20 mins), we have never minded this because there's so many shops to look at on the way in :). Just one tip - don't pay exorbitant prices to go on the Thomas Cook trips (we never saw the rep once by the way). Go to the Foreigners Club (tourist information) instead in Sorrento and pick up the bus & boat timetables, you can do all your trips for a fraction of the cost. e.g. a return bus ticket to Positano is under €8. If you shop around like we do, Italy isn't overly expensive. The Sorrento market is a must!

Room Tip: Get a top floor room as it's quiet.

We enjoyed 11 nights at La Pergola in August 2013. This is a basic, quiet hotel and you get what you pay for (this was one of the cheapest hotels we could find in Sorrento). Food OK, basic table d'hote menu in the evening with the option to go to a restaurant in centre (still limited menu as part of half board but nice setting and location). Room small but clean - we had no view or balcony but again in Sorrento, we didn't expect to. It is a 20 minute walk on a busy road to get to Sorrento centre.

Good points:
All staff were very friendly and welcoming (including Restaurant staff, cleaning staff and Reception).
Clean and room towels changed everyday
Option to go to Cafe Latino in central Sorrento for dinner as part of half board.

To address some of the comments made by others:
Hotel bar prices were the same as everywhere else in Sorrento and whilst they did charge for ice, they did not seem to mind people buying alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at supermarket and drinking on sun terrace and by pool.
You do have to pay extra for air con but this has been standard in most European holidays we have been on recently.
The solarium was open - there were lots of loungers and chairs on the roof terrace for sunbathing as well as covered area.
People complain about the TV but is this really what you visit Sorrento for?
There is no entertainment in the hotel but there is plenty in Sorrento.

Italy is expensive. Especially compared to Greece and you just need to trake this into consideration when looking at value for money.

Room Tip: Pay for the balcony if you want it.

the staff was fantastic. we went there with so many places to see and did not leave Sorrento, we loved it so much we are planning to go back with our daughter next time. The only down side to our seven days was the frogmarch that the Thomas cook rep took us on, once we meet them in town (round the bars and clubs that they use),the third day we was there, and that was after she charged us ten euros each but you don't get a receipt for, and every where she took us we had found for our self's already!!! Also The rep was not at the hotel a lot but you get a office telephone number you can ring if you needed help.( and good luck with that).
